Chapter 631: So-called Family Members_1

After arranging matters for Wang Zikai and his two companions, Lin Feng drove straight from Yunding Hot Spring Club to the inpatient department of the nephrology unit at Jiang Hua Hospital.

This was the designated hospital for Wu Mei's mother's treatment. According to Wu Mei, her mother's condition had worsened over the past six months, and she would likely require frequent, lengthy hospital stays for dialysis. Lin Feng thought that if he went directly to the inpatient department, he should be able to find Wu Mei's mother, Cheng Yu.

Lin Feng planned to pay her medical bills and also deposit enough money for a kidney transplant surgery.

"Here to visit a patient? Who are you looking for?" Just as Lin Feng walked into the entrance of the inpatient building, a middle-aged female nurse behind the glass counter scrutinized him before asking flatly.

"Hello, could you please tell me which floor Ms. Cheng Yu is on?" Lin Feng found the nurse's unfriendly tone slightly unsettling. However, he considered that they dealt with patients all day, so it was understandable if their mood was a bit gloomy. Suppressing his irritation, Lin Feng asked politely.

"Cheng Yu? Hmph... You're looking for her?" The middle-aged nurse glanced at Lin Feng coldly, then chuckled faintly. "Third floor, room 305. Go on up yourself..."

Lin Feng found the nurse's laugh a bit strange, but he didn't dwell on it and turned towards the stairs.

The elevators in this hospital's inpatient department were generally reserved for severely ill, bedridden patients; ordinary patients and their families usually took the stairs.

As Lin Feng ascended the stairs, he clearly heard the nurse at the entrance say in a very mocking tone, "So, he's a relative of that pauper Cheng Yu. No wonder he comes empty-handed... It really is strange. Usually, when Cheng Yu is hospitalized, not a single person visits. Yet today, in such a short time, two people have come one after another..."

Lin Feng merely smiled at the first part of the nurse's comment, but the latter half piqued his curiosity. According to the nurse, someone had just visited Cheng Yu? Who could it be?

With this question in mind, Lin Feng reached the third floor and arrived outside room 305. Just as he reached the door, he heard a middle-aged woman's sobbing voice coming from inside the hospital room...

"...Third Uncle, what did you just say? The family is going to sell my house? No, that's not possible! That was Wu Nian's and my marital home; how can you just sell it?!"

"Cheng Yu... this isn't about just selling it. Developers have their eyes on that piece of land. Most people in Wu Family Village have already agreed to relocate; only a few households are refusing to move... and your old house is among them! Listen to Third Uncle, Wu Nian has been gone for so many years. Don't dwell on it too much! While the developers are still amenable, sign the agreement quickly. You can even get a larger share! Besides, you need money for your treatment. Isn't your health more important than that dilapidated house? What's more, you haven't lived there for over ten years!" an older man's voice calmly narrated.

"No, I don't want to move! If the developers want that land, that's their business. They wouldn't dare try to force me. I'm a martyr's dependent; they absolutely wouldn't dare act recklessly!" Cheng Yu, lying on the hospital bed, looked at the man in his fifties by her bedside and stated firmly.

Cheng Yu bore some resemblance to Wu Mei. However, age and illness had left their mark of hardship on her face, making her look somewhat haggard. Yet, this slight haggardness didn't detract much from her looks. Even in a hospital gown and lying in bed, Cheng Yu was still a woman of lingering charm.

Cheng Yu's third uncle, who was also her deceased husband Wu Nian's third uncle, Wu Lian, was currently the head of Wu Family Village. This was the first time in over ten years he had proactively sought out Cheng Yu. His purpose was to help the developers persuade her to sell the old house under her name.

Over twenty years ago, Cheng Yu and Wu Nian married and jointly built a small, two-story house in their hometown. Later, Wu Nian died on a mission in Yunbian Province. Cheng Yu then took their newborn daughter, Wu Mei, to Jiangzhou and had not returned to Wu Family Village for nearly twenty years. She never imagined that after all this time, a relative from Wu Family Village would come looking for her. What was even more unexpected was that Wu Lian's purpose in finding her was to get her to sell that old house!

How could that house be sold? Cheng Yu thought in anguish. Apart from Wu Mei, that house was the only remaining shared memory she had with Wu Nian. If it was sold, she feared she would forget the beautiful moments they once shared!

Upon hearing Cheng Yu's words, Wu Lian's expression darkened. Although he had expected such an answer, he still felt a bit displeased with this outcome.

"Hmph, a martyr's dependent? How many people even believe that?" Wu Lian asked coldly. "Although Wu Nian's unit issued a certificate back then, they suppressed it for a full year before allowing us to announce it. After a year, even people in our own village didn't believe Wu Nian was a martyr, let alone others! Of course, as family, I, as the village head of Wu Family Village and Wu Nian's third uncle, naturally wouldn't mistreat his wife and child. This time, I've fought for the best terms for you. Others are getting three thousand five hundred per square meter in compensation; I got you three thousand seven hundred per square meter. The terms are already very generous! Just give a nod, sign the contract, and don't make things difficult for your Third Uncle!"

Cheng Yu looked at Wu Lian with a cold smile. More than ten years ago, it was this very 'Third Uncle,' a supposed family member, who had called her an outsider. He also claimed Wu Mei had a hard fate that 'jinxed' her father, and thus had no right to live in Wu Family Village. It was because of this that she had angrily taken Wu Mei and left Wu Family Village. Now, seeing Wu Lian again after more than a decade, she had thought his disposition might have changed. Unexpectedly, he was still much the same...

"Third Uncle, I recall Wu Nian's parents passed away quite early. There should still be a considerable amount of private land registered under Wu Nian's name, right? I wonder how the developers accounted for that land during this expropriation?" Cheng Yu looked at Wu Lian with a cold smile and asked lightly.

Wu Lian was momentarily stunned by Cheng Yu's question. He remembered clearly about Wu Nian's land. After Cheng Yu left Wu Family Village, that land had naturally been 'confiscated' and become his, Wu Lian's, property. The developers had also acquired that land in this round of expropriation, and, of course, the money had gone into Wu Lian's pocket!

"That land... that land... Since you all moved out, it naturally counts as village property... However, if you need money, the village will provide some appropriate compensation! But don't ask for too much!" Wu Lian said, looking at Cheng Yu with an expression as if it pained him to part with his own flesh.

Seeing Wu Lian's reaction, Cheng Yu's heart turned completely cold. Is this what family is like? She smiled bitterly and shook her head. "Forget it, Third Uncle. You should go back. I will never sell the house, not even if I die..."
