Chapter 110: The Strange Adventure Upon First Arriving in Huaxia
"I wish you a pleasant study abroad experience in Huaxia."
When the customs officer at Lin Hai Xin Dong International Airport handed the passport back to Hanna Ravenstahl, the Central European girl silently heaved a sigh of relief.
Unlike what she had imagined, the immigration procedures in Huaxia were all smooth and proper. There was no "little black room," not too much questioning, and not even one staff member asking for a bribe. On the contrary, everyone she encountered was friendly and polite.
She had even saved the several ten-euro bills she had separately put in her pocket for emergencies.
Originally, according to the arrangements made by the school, someone was supposed to meet her upon her arrival in Huaxia.
But Hanna Ravenstahl was by nature adventurous. So after the school had arranged her visa and study in Huaxia, she chose to make her way to Huaxia alone.
Since there were no direct flights from Vienna to Xilin, and Lin Hai City was one of the most renowned cities in Huaxia, Hanna, on her first visit to Huaxia, decided to first take an international flight to Lin Hai City to explore for two days before heading to Xilin City.
Carefully tucking her passport and wallet into the innermost part of her backpack, Hanna finally stepped into Huaxia's border with a relaxed stride.
And again, it was not quite as she had imagined.
The environment of Lin Hai Airport was comfortable and clean, the shiny floors even reflected her slender figure, and the clear and concise bilingual signs in Chinese and English were nothing like what the media had described of this Third World country.
This made her start to believe what some of the Huaxia students in her school had said.
"Once you get to Huaxia, you'll know. Sometimes what your media says about Huaxia really leaves one at a loss for words."
At the very least, this airport was no worse than Vienna's, perhaps even the signs were a bit more considerate.
Just stepping past immigration, Hanna spotted at least two volunteers fluent in foreign languages, wearing armbands and answering questions in English for visitors who had just entered the country.
This made Hanna feel quite special; it was a service she had not seen at other country airports.
Well, after all, this was an international airport, a nation's window to the outside world.
Thinking such thoughts, she followed the guide she had looked up online, found an ATM with a VISA logo at the airport to withdraw some money, and then, guided by the signs, she found the taxi stand.
She had booked a Deluxe King room on trip.com. The price was not too expensive, just 168 US dollars.
Now Hanna only hoped that the hotel she had booked would be at least half as nice as the airport; she would be quite satisfied with that.
"Four Seasons Hotel, ni hao, I want to go to..."
Just as Hanna, with the help of the driver, was loading her luggage into the car and trying to express her destination in the Mandarin she had only learned for half a month, the driver who had already buckled his seat belt couldn't help but ask, "Can you speak English?"
His fluent pronunciation took Hanna aback for a moment, and then she quickly responded, "Yeah, yeah, I want to go there..."
While speaking, Hanna simply handed her phone to the driver to take a look.
"OK, I know, Marshland Yaduo Hotel, a great choice."
...
The driver's words made Hanna happy.
Having no communication problems was definitely beyond Hanna's expectations.
What Hanna didn't expect even more was that after driving out of the airport, she saw clean, broad roads, luxury cars passing by now and then, traffic lights in excellent maintenance, and well-dressed pedestrians of various styles walking along the streets.
Especially after entering the city, the modern cityscape of Linhai was mesmerizing.
Many people dislike the high-rise buildings in cities, even coining the term "concrete jungle."
But one has to admit, those skyscrapers piercing the sky, despite all their shortcomings, do indeed bring a great shock to the first-time viewer.
Especially for Hanna, who had almost traveled all over Europe, her mind was full of question marks at that moment.
Who would have thought? This place is merely a Third World country?
"Excuse me, I want to make sure I haven't come to the wrong place. This is Huaxia, right?" Hanna asked the driver.
"Haha, you are not the first foreigner to have this doubt. Yes, this is Lin Hai in Huaxia. The place you see now was a suburb just twenty years ago, with barely a few buildings. So, how should I put it? You can criticize Huaxia for various things, but you must acknowledge Huaxia's construction speed is definitely number one in the world," the driver laughed.
"Well... it's quite evident. If the suburbs are like what I imagined, I can't envision them transforming into what I see before me in just twenty years," Hanna said seriously.
"Alright, where are you from?"
"Austria."
"Oh, Vienna is a very beautiful city. It's a pity I've never been to Europe, but I did go to Canada when I was young. Really, at that time I had the chance to stay there because my uncle sold his house here and the whole family immigrated there. But now I'm very glad I chose to come back."
"Yes, I have been to several Canadian cities too, except for Edmonton, where my impressions of other cities weren't that good, and even for Edmonton, I feel it doesn't compare to here."
"You have good taste. By the way, is this your first time in Huaxia? What brings you here?"
"Yes, it's my first time. I'm here to study."
"Huh? There are no schools near the hotel you've booked?"
"No, my school is Xilin University of Technology. Since I was coming to Linhai for a layover, I decided to play here for two days. I've booked a flight to Xilin the day after tomorrow."
