Chapter 258: A Desperate Future
"Lucy, tell me everything," Calvin's voice emerged from the Dark Magician in a hidden corner of Crocus.
Standing before him was a beautiful blonde woman, her face haggard and sorrowful.
Her appearance and magical presence unmistakably belonged to Lucy, Fairy Tail's Celestial Spirit Mage.
After finding this Lucy look-alike, the Dark Magician had brought her to this secluded spot to have a proper conversation.
"Cal... Calvin, please help me," the woman who looked just like Lucy wept again upon hearing his voice, softly sobbing.
Her appearance and reactions indicated she had endured a terrifying ordeal, evident from the fact that she was missing an arm.
"I will help you. Tell me everything that happened," the Dark Magician said firmly. Seeing the current situation, Calvin knew something significant had occurred.
Calvin was confident that the woman before the Dark Magician was indeed Lucy. His confidence stemmed from his belief that no one could deceive him.
Because of this, he was puzzled.
After a while, Lucy calmed down and began to speak in a low voice.
"I came from the future, through a gate called Eclipse, to change the worst possible future."
Hearing this, the Dark Magician's expression darkened with disbelief.
"The future... what happened?" he asked.
"On July 7th, the day after the Grand Magic Games ended, more than ten thousand dragons attacked this country."
"The streets were burned, castles crumbled, countless lives turned to ash, and all that awaited us was despair."
After she finished, both Lucy and the Dark Magician fell silent.
The revelation was too shocking, leaving Calvin unsure of how to react.
"So, you were the only survivor? Did I die too?" the Dark Magician asked after a long pause, his voice trembling slightly, even for Calvin.
Future Lucy bit her lip, unsure how to respond, but her expression told Calvin everything he needed to know: he had not survived.
"I died, didn't I?"
"Yes... right in front of me," Future Lucy answered, her voice shaking with fear.
"Couldn't even escape... that's terrible," the Dark Magician sighed, sounding dejected.
"No, you died protecting the injured Mirajane, fighting off three dragons until the very end. You even killed one!" Future Lucy cried out, her voice filled with emotion.
Startled by her outburst, the Dark Magician was silent for a moment before he smiled wryly. "So what? After I died, Mirajane couldn't escape either."
Future Lucy had no response and hung her head in silence. Seeing her distressed state, Calvin couldn't help but gently pat her head, speaking softly.
"Luckily, you didn't die back then; otherwise, there'd be no one to bring me this message."
"Sorry, I couldn't bring any solutions from the future. I have no idea how to prevent this disaster," Lucy said, still looking down. Calvin's comfort did little to ease her worry.
In truth, Calvin was deeply concerned. Despite his intelligence, he felt utterly lost after hearing such news, unable to think of a solution.
Even he was panicking at this moment.
But Future Lucy was even more panicked.
"When I returned to the past, I didn't know what to do. I wandered around until you found me at the arena. I'm sorry. I don't even know why I came back..."
Her voice choked with sobs, but the Dark Magician interrupted gently, holding her hand. Though it lacked human warmth, it felt incredibly comforting and reliable to her.
"Bringing me this message is more than enough. Trust me, I will find a way," he said confidently, dispelling the anxiety in Future Lucy's heart and making her smile.
"Thank you, Calvin," Future Lucy said again.
"I'm the most reliable mage in Fairy Tail, aren't I? Solving problems for you all is something I'm used to."
"Now, I need all the details you can give me. Tell me everything you know," the Dark Magician's tone turned serious, and Future Lucy, understanding the importance, began to recall her memories.
Despite his initial panic, Calvin quickly regained his composure. Reflecting on Future Lucy's words, he noticed discrepancies.
According to her, more than ten thousand dragons would attack. But where had these dragons been hiding all this time?
The world was vast, but not infinite. Calvin found it hard to believe that such a large number of dragons could remain hidden without any prior indication.
After all, dragons' massive bodies weren't easily concealed.
Calvin counted the dragons he knew of: seven in total. Natsu, Gajeel, Wendy, Sabertooth's twin dragons, the five dragons who taught them Dragon Slayer magic, the poison dragon slain by his grandfather, and Acnologia.
Five of them disappeared on July 7th, 777.
Beyond these seven, dragons had vanished from human sight centuries ago.
Thus, Calvin had never heard of any reports about large groups of dragons, which was highly suspicious.
Another question was why they chose July 7th. If over ten thousand dragons existed, they could dominate the world at any time. Why hide for four hundred years?
From what Future Lucy said, it seemed like these dragons appeared out of nowhere, raising doubts.
Yet, he couldn't detect any falsehood in Future Lucy's story. Her tears were genuine.
As he pondered, Future Lucy finished organizing her thoughts and began recounting her experience.
On the fourth day of the games, Calvin discovered a dragon graveyard beneath the ground and brought a group to investigate, including Lucy.
Through Wendy, they communicated with a dragon's spirit, learning that Acnologia was once human. Then, a knight in white armor appeared with Yukino, explaining his plan.
The Eclipse Project involved using celestial spirit mages and twelve keys to alter time, traveling back four hundred years on July 7th to kill Zeref, who was not yet immortal, and Acnologia, who was not yet invincible.
The group was led to the Eclipse Gate in the palace, where the defense minister appeared, arresting the knight and the two celestial spirit mages. Magic couldn't be used near the gate, so even Calvin couldn't stop it.
On the final day of the games, Fairy Tail split into two groups: one fought in the guild war, and the other went to rescue Lucy. Though they succeeded, they were captured again after passing through the Eclipse Gate, which was inevitably opened.
After that, Future Lucy's memory was unclear. When she regained awareness, destruction surrounded her, with dragons rampaging.
Future Lucy then used the damaged Eclipse Gate to return to July 4th.
And that was the entire story.
The Dark Magician's expression grew even more serious, and Future Lucy seemed frightened, like a bird startled by a branch.
Suddenly, Calvin's voice emerged.
"I understand. There's still a chance to solve this."
There are still two more chapters to be released, but they'll be out after midnight, technically for today.
