Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Four Against One
"What is she...? Her power is insane," Mei whispered, her voice trembling as she watched Zephyra's dark aura pulsate across the battlefield.
Mia darted to Max, who was on the ground groaning in pain after the devastating kick to his stomach.
Without hesitation, she cast her spell, 'Dazzling Halo, a radiant light surrounding Max and mending his battered body.
His wounds closed rapidly, his strength returning as he rose to his feet.
The four heroes—Max, Leo, Mei, and Mia—stood shoulder to shoulder, forming a tight formation as they prepared to face Zephyra.
All around them, the battle came to a halt. Human soldiers and demons alike stopped fighting, drawn to the growing tension.
The two armies formed a ring around the combatants, their eyes fixed on the showdown that could decide the war.
"Four against one, huh?" Xender muttered from the shadows, his arms crossed as he observed.
A faint smirk crossed his face.
"Not exactly fair... but this will be interesting."
Zephyra's eyes burned with malice as she broke into a sprint, her small frame tearing across the battlefield with unnatural speed.
"Winter's Grasp!" Leo shouted, thrusting his hands forward.
A fierce storm erupted, frost and snow swirling toward Zephyra in an attempt to slow her down.
But it was useless. Dark energy radiated from her body, forming a shield-like aura that shattered the icy magic before it could touch her.
"Master Summoning Spell!" Mei yelled, her hands glowing as a summoning circle appeared beneath her feet.
Two ethereal figures emerged from the light—a warrior spirit clad in gleaming armor, wielding dual swords, and a hulking berserker spirit armed with an enormous axe.
They charged at Zephyra with blinding speed, their combined power matching Mei's own magical strength of 50.
Zephyra barely blinked as the warrior spirit lunged at her, its swords cutting through the air. With a casual motion, she sidestepped the attack and delivered a crushing blow with her fist, sending the spirit staggering back.
The berserker swung its massive axe, aiming for her head, but she caught it with one hand, her dark aura flaring as she shattered the weapon into shards.
"Colossal Strike Slash!" Max bellowed, his twin blades glowing with power. He swung both swords in a wide arc, unleashing twin wind slashes that roared toward Zephyra like hurricanes.
"Permafrost Aura!" Leo shouted at the same time, casting a freezing spell that encased Zephyra in a shimmering frost, momentarily weakening her movements.
The combined attacks hit her, forcing her back several feet. The wind slashes left deep scars in the ground, but when the dust settled, Zephyra stood unharmed, her arms crossed as if she were bored.
Her red eyes glowed brighter, her smirk replaced by a look of cold fury.
"You dare push me back?" she hissed, her voice low and menacing. The air around her grew heavy, crackling with dark energy.
"I'll show you the power of a true elite demon!"
Zephyra raised her hands, her aura expanding as she cast 'Obfuscation', an advanced magic spell.
Shadows exploded outward, blanketing the battlefield in darkness so dense it swallowed the light. Day turned into an oppressive night.
The air grew thick and suffocating, each breath like inhaling smoke. Human soldiers collapsed to the ground, gasping for air, their bodies too weak to endure the dark magic.
One by one, they suffocated, their lifeless forms strewn across the battlefield.
Max, Leo, Mei, and Mia struggled to stand. The oppressive magic weighed down on them, sapping their strength.
"What... is this?" Max growled, his voice strained as he tightened his grip on his blades.
Leo's icy magic flickered around him as he tried to push back against the dark aura.
"She's changing the entire battlefield… I've never seen magic like this," he muttered, sweat dripping down his face.
Mei's hands trembled as she fought to keep her spirits summoned.
"She's suffocating us... even my spirits are struggling to stay materialized," she said, her voice filled with alarm.
Zephyra laughed, the sound echoing through the unnatural darkness.
"This is my domain now," she said, her voice a chilling whisper that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once.
"And none of you will leave here alive."
The four heroes exchanged a glance. They knew they were outmatched, but they had no choice but to stand and fight. This was a battle for humanity's survival.
The battlefield was littered with bodies. Knights, mages, and adventurers alike had fallen to Zephyra's devastating magic.
Her 'Obfuscation' spell had reduced their forces to mere dozens, their once-mighty army now a shadow of its former strength.
The air was heavy with despair, and the surviving soldiers cowered in fear.
"She's too strong," Xender muttered to himself from the back of the battlefield.
His sharp eyes followed Zephyra as she slowly advanced toward the heroes, her intent clear in every deliberate step.
"Those fools don't stand a chance. If they die, I'll just slip away. No point wasting my time here."
Zephyra's aura of menace grew with every step. The ground seemed to tremble beneath her, her dark energy rippling through the air. The heroes stood frozen, struggling to muster the strength to face her again.
But it wasn't over.
Amid the chaos, Mia slowly rose to her feet. Her hands trembled, but her resolve was unshaken. Her magic, rooted in light, gave her a natural resistance to darkness.
She closed her eyes and raised her hands high above her head, her voice steady as she chanted:
"Blinding Beacon!"
A radiant explosion of light erupted from her, engulfing the battlefield in a warm, golden glow. Mia's body transformed, her figure radiating brilliance like a miniature sun.
The light spread out in waves, gentle and soothing, yet impossibly powerful. The oppressive darkness that had suffocated the battlefield dissolved in an instant.
The remaining soldiers gasped for air, their lungs filling with oxygen once more. Knights and adventurers who had been on the brink of death found the strength to stand.
Even the other heroes felt the effects of Mia's spell, their magic energy surging as if they'd been renewed.
Zephyra staggered, shielding her eyes as the light overwhelmed her. She hissed, her expression contorted in frustration.
"What… is this?" she growled, her confidence wavering for the first time.
Leo didn't waste the opportunity. "Now's our chance!" he yelled, slamming his hands into the ground.
"Frost Eruption!"
The earth beneath Zephyra rumbled as massive ice spikes erupted from the ground, shooting toward her with terrifying speed. Zephyra managed to leap into the air, dodging the deadly spikes just in time.
But Max was waiting for her.
Anticipating her move, he leaped into the air with his twin blades glowing brightly.
"Colossal Strike!" he roared, swinging his weapons in a devastating cross-slash.
The attack connected, slicing across Zephyra's body and sending her crashing to the ground.
She landed hard, skidding across the dirt before coming to a stop. For the first time, blood dripped from her lips, her body trembling as she struggled to rise.
The dark aura that had once cloaked her so menacingly was now faint, almost nonexistent.
Zephyra coughed, spitting blood onto the ground. Her sharp red eyes glared at the heroes.
"You dare... wound me?" she hissed, her voice filled with fury.
But the light from Mia's spell had rendered her dark magic nearly useless.
Max stepped forward, his blades ready for a finishing blow.
"This ends now," he said, his voice cold and determined.
But before he could strike, Xender sprang into action.
"I can't let her die," he muttered, his mind racing.
If Zephyra fell here, his grand plan to rise as the greatest villain would be ruined. He needed her alive—for now.
With a quick chant, Xender cast 'Abyssal Conjurer', his dark magic summoning shadowy creatures from the depths.
The humanoid figures rose silently from the heroes' own shadows, their twisted forms lashing out with clawed hands.
The heroes stumbled back, caught off guard. The shadow creatures weren't strong, but their sudden appearance created enough chaos to break the heroes' focus.
Mia gasped as one of the creatures slashed at her, interrupting her spell. Her radiant light flickered and vanished, plunging the battlefield into dimness once more.
"Damn it!" Max growled, swinging his blades to cut down the shadow creatures.
"Stay focused! Don't let them distract you!"
But the opening was all Zephyra needed. She staggered to her feet, her dark aura beginning to regenerate as the light vanished. A cruel smile spread across her bloodied face.
"Fools… You thought you'd won?"
The heroes regrouped, their eyes darting between the shadow creatures and the recovering Zephyra.
The tide of battle had shifted once again, and the air crackled with tension as they prepared for the next round.
