Chapter 6: 06 Not Optimistic? Why?
Scene Change - Tiger King and McGuinness are looking at the rookies who have just started their practice. (McGuinness is the assistant here with Tiger just being promoted. McGuinness doesn't mind as his salary is similar to Tiger's and he knows Tiger is worth cultivating to a pillar of Manchester United for the future.)
The injury suffered by Tiger King during training had been nothing short of a disaster for Manchester United at the time. The doctor's diagnosis revealed a severe torn ligament, requiring months of treatment. It was confirmed that he could no longer continue playing professionally. His football career came to a heartbreaking end.
The incident sent shockwaves through Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson was deeply distressed by the loss of his beloved disciple, while his young teammates were equally devastated. As if fate hadn't dealt him a big enough blow, tragedy struck again—Tiger King's parents passed away one after another in the same year. Left alone in the world, he had to face life's hardships on his own.
However, Ferguson stepped in. He arranged for Tiger King to join the youth team as a teaching assistant, encouraging him to pursue a coaching qualification. Under Ferguson's guidance and care, Tiger King achieved the prestigious FIFA A-Class coaching qualification at the age of 22, setting a new record in England. Ferguson then appointed him as a full-time coach for the youth team, marking the beginning of his coaching career.
Now, at 38, Tiger King has accumulated 16 years of coaching experience, making him one of the most qualified in his field. He currently serves as the assistant coach of Manchester United's youth team, working alongside coach McGuinness to develop the next generation of football stars.
Over the years, life has treated him well. He enjoys financial stability, owns a comfortable three-bedroom apartment near the Carrington training base, and has no worries about food and clothing. Yet, despite all of this, a lingering sense of regret remains.
Every time he watches his former teammates, Beckham and Giggs, battling on the pitch, a deep sadness stirs within him. He often envisions himself leading Manchester United to a historic treble, captaining the team, and basking in the cheers of the fans as he retires in glory.
But these dreams remain just that—dreams.
"Tiger, is there still something in your heart?" McGuinness interrupted Tiger's thoughts knowing he was known to spiral into negative thoughts watching the rookies train occasionally.
"It's okay! I was swept up in the past" reacted Tiger King.
"Tiger, the past is over. Don't think too much. You are the coach now. I am older and I am not sure in a few years. Do your best, maybe one day you can go and direct the game there." McGuinness pointed to the east towards the Old Trafford stadium.
"So close, yet so far" replied Tiger King, smiling slightly though a bit excited at the prospect.
"That's right! Smile more" replied McGuinness, before shifting his attention towards the young players on the field.
Tiger did the same, eyes fixed on the movement of his players. The training session was in full swing, but something wasn't quite right. He cupped his hands around his mouth and called out firmly:
"Oh, the midfield and frontcourt are too close! Spread out a little—don't let the forwards wait alone up front! Pull the gap and strengthen your running!"
His voice carried across the pitch, prompting the players to adjust their positioning. He watched as they responded, shifting into better formations, their movements more fluid and coordinated. A satisfied nod followed. This was how a team played—together, with purpose.
While standing by the training ground looking at the young players, he reviewed his past memories, smiling with regret.
He was overwhelmed with emotion as he reflected on the past. If it weren't for that fateful injury, Tiger King's career could have reached incredible heights. But life is unpredictable—fickle and ever-changing.
Just like his own transformation. Yesterday, he was Jin Taige; today, he was simply Tiger King.
Yet, despite everything, he still cherished the nickname "Tiger." It carried strength, resilience, and the spirit of a fighter—qualities that defined him both on and off the pitch.
Looking at the instructions given by Tiger King in satisfaction, McGuinness smiled thinking that the team would be in great hands. He stopped thinking about it and approached Tiger to talk with him about the first team's recent performance.
McGuinness's face became light and happy: "There are 4 games left, and we are 7 points ahead of Manchester City, the championship is sure to be ours this time! It's so cool to be able to step on our top rival money tycoons Manchester City!"
"Yes, as long as there are no accidents, we will be the Champions. A fitting send off for Sir Alex Ferguson"
"Yes, the Jazz is retiring and Scholes is also retiring. This is really sad. Like the end of an era for Manchester United."
"Fortunately, the first team is now strong enough. No matter who takes over from Sir Alex Ferguson next season, we will still be a strong contender for the championship." One of the assistant coaches, eager to make his presence known, seized the opportunity after hearing the two big names discuss a topic where his input might be noticed.
Tiger King folded his arms, his gaze sharp as he watched the ongoing discussions among the coaching staff. When asked about Manchester United's current state, he shook his head and spoke with firm conviction.
"I don't think so. I don't think Manchester United's situation is very optimistic. The team's lineup is in crisis, and the outlook is not promising."
His words carried weight, reflecting both his experience and deep understanding of the club's challenges.
"Crisis? Not Optimistic? Tiger, why do you think the prospects of the First team are not optimistic?" came a voice from the far back who had originally not meant to speak but couldn't help it after hearing Tiger's comments.
Tiger, McGuinness and the coaching staff froze at once. McGuinness and the coaching staff only had one thought in their minds 'Tiger was in trouble!'
"Coach Ferguson!" exclaimed Tiger, unsure if things would be good or bad if he spoke further on the topic.
"Just came by to look at the rookies to see who deserves a chance. No matter. Don't change the topic. Tiger! Not optimistic. Why?"
Ferguson's pointed question cut through the air like a blade, bringing an abrupt silence to the field. The chatter among the staff and players died down as all eyes shifted toward Tiger King.
Everyone waited.
The weight of expectation hung heavy in the moment, the tension almost palpable. Tiger could feel their gazes pressing on him, urging him to respond.
