Chapter 1071: Taking Action
In the pitch-black darkness, visibility was poor, and gun skills were lacking. The enemy, however, were elite soldiers well-versed in special and night operations. Facing such an opponent, without good grassroots command, Hook's tribal forces indeed couldn't hold them off. Everyone pondered deeply. After a moment, Luo Zheng smiled bitterly and began contemplating, saying: "Hook's people have weak gun skills. Let's have our people spread out in every corner for free sniping while commanding the battle. Hook's people can form dense defenses using volley fire tactics. In this pitch darkness, they probably can't aim accurately anyway. Might as well keep firing blindly."
"That makes sense. Volley fire ensures bullet density, and random firing creates dead angles and spaces. With our army's capabilities, we can completely utilize these dead angles and spaces to advance, but a wave of continuous bullets is different. There are no dead angles, no spaces to dodge, and simultaneous firing makes it hard to avoid. I think it can work," Mountain Eagle said excitedly.
"Back then, when our older generation of warriors first went to the front lines, facing the fierce and accurate Japanese soldiers, they used this very volley fire tactic. Everyone didn't need to aim carefully; they just fired ahead in turns, keeping the Japanese from raising their heads or evading. I think we should try it too," Ghost Hand agreed.
Luo Zheng looked at Lan Xue, who thought for a moment and said: "It's worth a try. Spread a hundred men wide, which would cover a decent area. Divide them into three rows, making it three hundred in total, to fire in turns and ensure density and rate of fire. The six hundred or so others will be the reserve team, ready to reinforce and support firepower. Zhou Gang and others scattered at different lines can use their earpieces to coordinate with my commands, but we need Hook's absolute support and trust."
"Don't worry, they will support us," Luo Zheng assured.
They discussed some details, and the initial plan was set. Luo Zheng called Hook over and thoroughly explained the situation. Hook readily agreed and went to coordinate with Lan Xue, while Luo Zheng, Ghost Hand, and Mountain Eagle entered the cave, placing their backpacks and equipment together. To stealthily attack the enemy, they needed to lighten their load, so Luo Zheng also put down the activation device and said to the injured Lei Jian and the other four: "You guys are hurt, rest well and take care of this box."
"Is there a fight?" Lei Jian asked eagerly.
"Let us go. I only have a leg injury; I can still ambush and snipe," one warrior said excitedly.
Luo Zheng glanced at him—a very competent sniper brought along by Zhang Fan and Zhou Gang—patted his shoulder, and then looked at the other three. Among them, Lei Jian was the most wounded, but three others were still combat-capable, able to hide and snipe effectively. Luo Zheng shook his head decisively and said: "You're all top-notch, and I don't want you to lose your lives here. Rest and heal well; there will be plenty of battles in the future. Remember, this box is more valuable than our lives. If the enemy storms in, you know what to do?"
"Rest assured, I will go down with it," Lei Jian said without hesitation.
"Life persists, and so does the box," the others also said with firm determination.
"Very good. Never give up lightly; life is only once. This box is entrusted to you five," Luo Zheng said emotionally. What great comrades, he thought as he felt the burden on his shoulders grow heavier. With a determined look sweeping over everyone, filled with fighting spirit and confidence, he said: "Don't worry, we'll get through this."
"Yes," everyone replied firmly, exuding a sense of deep trust.
Luo Zheng turned to leave, stepping outside the cave where Ghost Hand and Mountain Eagle were waiting. Besides their original weapons, they also prepared an M4 rifle captured in battle. This rifle had an initial velocity of 884 meters per second, a range of 600 meters, and could fire nearly 980 rounds per minute, which meant it could shoot over 16 bullets per second. This rate of fire was highly advantageous for close combat, creating a barrage of fire that could shred the enemy.
The "S-1-3" system on this rifle assured Luo Zheng—having safety, single shot, and three-round burst capabilities. The terrifying continuous fire combined with single and burst fire made it very suitable for jungle night battles. What Luo Zheng appreciated more was its ammunition capacity—one clip held 30 bullets, ensuring duration of ammo supply.
Mountain Eagle handed an M4 and three loaded clips to Luo Zheng, who accepted them. With a determined look directed towards the mountain base, his eyes grew sharper. He nodded at the two, put on his night vision device, and strode towards the back mountain. Ghost Hand and Mountain Eagle followed, also donning their night vision devices.
A dozen minutes later, the three reached the back mountain and moved past three defense lines, continuing for around 300 meters. They each found spots to hide, with Luo Zheng looking towards the mountain base. It was pitch black, with unidentified insects chirping tirelessly; leaves rustled in the wind, and moonlight softly and gracefully filtered through the dense canopy.
"Squawk!" An owl called out, and a large bird flew from the forest into the night sky, quickly disappearing. Luo Zheng calmly watched his surroundings, feeling something approaching. He turned to look: it was a viper, the size of an egg, over a meter long, coiled around a branch, watching curiously.
Luo Zheng didn't want to pay attention to the snake, but seeing it flick its tongue and slowly slither over, he got annoyed. Drawing his Tiger Teeth military knife, he swiftly slashed, severing the viper's head which fell while its body still writhed on the branch. Luo Zheng coldly sheathed his knife and continued observing ahead.
A few minutes later, confirming no danger ahead, Luo Zheng lightly touched his earpiece. Ghost Hand and Mountain Eagle also lightly touched theirs, making a sound. The three advanced in a triangular attack formation with Luo Zheng as the point. They moved cautiously, ears alert, missing no sound.
About 200 meters forward, they suddenly heard cricket chirping ahead stop, making Luo Zheng crouch alertly on the spot. He slowly moved to a nearby large tree to conceal himself and lightly touched his earpiece to send a warning signal, drawing his pistol and gently fastening the suppressor, ready for anything.
Crickets are sensitive, instantly quieting with slight abnormality until danger clears. Luo Zheng reasoned someone might be approaching and dared not be careless, swiftly observing the surrounding terrain. On the steep hillside were dense trees but no underbrush for cover, only a thick layer of accumulated fallen leaves.
Luo Zheng patiently waited without anyone appearing. Through the night vision device, it was silent ahead, nothing visible. Crickets chirped again, and Luo Zheng thought perhaps a viper or something had startled them. He carefully pushed aside the ground leaves, disturbing insects hiding inside like scorpions.
After reaching a certain depth in the fallen leaves, Luo Zheng lay down amidst them, gently pulling surrounding leaves over to cover himself, leaving only his head exposed in the tree's shadow, eyes half-closed, murderous aura contained, gradually blending with the surroundings as if he disappeared without a trace.
