Chapter 1067: Struggle for Interests
Piero, due to his background, once again established his position as the chief commander. The next step was the deployment of the attack plan. It concerned the interests of all parties, so no one dared to be careless. Everyone looked at Piero with vigilance. Piero knew that to get everyone to work hard, he must provide sufficient benefits. Otherwise, not only would he be unable to command them, but internal friction would also occur, disbanding the alliance before they even attacked, which would not be beneficial for him.
The Snow Bear Special Forces Captain scanned the room sharply, dissatisfiedly saying, "We must launch the attack while the enemy is stabilizing. Once they are stable and ready, it will be harder to fight. Therefore, we must come up with a combat plan quickly. I propose that the Wild Wolf Mercenary Group launches the attack first, with the Wild Wolves leading the charge and focusing on a single point. We will follow up and push forward relentlessly."
"Why? Why not you go first?" Tang Tian said discontentedly. In terms of numbers, she had brought over thirty people, all battle-hardened veterans. They might not match the Snow Bear in individual combat, but they have the advantage in numbers. Tang Tian wasn't afraid, especially with the help of the Wild Wolves. She was confident. If not for needing Sam Country, she wouldn't agree to the alliance, let alone take Snow Bear's suggestion seriously.
"Wild wolves are just beasts. If they die, so be it. Why should you care?" the Snow Bear Captain coldly remarked.
"Alright, stop arguing." Piero saw Tang Tian's face change, about to explode, and promptly intervened to mediate, gesturing to silence Tang Tian, and also threw an implicit look at the Snow Bear Captain, then said solemnly, "I have a suggestion for everyone, hear me out."
"Go ahead," everyone spoke almost in unison, piqued with interest.
"The reason for this alliance is clear to everyone—frankly, we're all here for the launch device. I propose that whoever first attacks and gets the launch device will be the first to study it, followed by the second attacker, and so on. How about that?" Piero quickly suggested.
"Okay," everyone agreed. No one was foolish; they saw through Piero's intent to use others as cannon fodder, but they were strong and had their own pride and honor. They believed they could do it, that they wouldn't become cannon fodder and would be the first to seize the launch device.
Piero secretly chuckled and continued seriously, "In that case, we now discuss the attack plan. The Snow Bear Captain's previous proposal was good; the enemy is scattered in their defense, their forces dispersed. Instead of attacking on all fronts, we should concentrate our strength on one point for a quick breakthrough, and seize the launch device. Who will take the lead?"
"I will." Unlike before, where everyone was shirking, this time everyone almost answered in unison. Taking the lead meant danger but also the best chance to seize the launch device, and no one would relent.
Piero watched this unfold and suddenly had the strange thought of whether this alliance could really seize the launch device. But he didn't mention it, coming forward to mediate, signaling everyone to calm down, and continued, "Since everyone is so eager, for fairness, let's draw lots."
Drawing lots was fair and reasonable. Piero used twigs of the same size as lots. Everyone drew lots separately, with the longest one leading the charge. The first round saw the Snow Bear Captain drawing the longest lot. Inwardly delighted, he began planning how to seize the launch device once the fighting started. The second round continued with another drawing, and the longest lot would be responsible for the second wave of attack.
This round was drawn by Tang Tian, who felt inwardly elated. Her gaze turned a bit colder as she looked at the Snow Bear Captain, contemplating how to trick her opponent in the upcoming fight and seize the launch device. Once obtained, Tang Tian had resolved to immediately retreat. To hell with the alliance; with the launch device, Tang Tian was confident of advancing the glory restoration of the Wild Wolf Mercenary Group by two years.
Everyone drew lots with their own agendas, arranging the attack order. Piero set the attack time at two in the morning, when people are most easily lulled into a stupor. Once the final arrangements were confirmed, everyone dispersed to prepare. There were still several hours until the attack, and everyone needed to use this time to rest.
A kilometer away from the alliance's base, nestled in the crown of a tall ancient tree, Luo Zheng was observing the situation around the campfire. Five minutes ago, Luo Zheng and Lan Xue had infiltrated the area secretly. To avoid detection, they spread out, each climbing a tree to observe. Luo Zheng watched as the group dispersed, uncertain of what was happening, a vague unease gnawing at him. He knew it was nothing good and quickly set up his sniper rifle.
There was light near the campfire, with figures moving faintly. Those who left the campfire were hard to see. Luo Zheng, a bit annoyed, lowered his voice and said, "Xue Er, what's the situation on your end?"
"Can't see too clearly. Should I move in a bit closer?" Lan Xue replied softly.
"Let's observe a bit longer. The dense forest ahead surely has enemy sentinels. Be careful," Luo Zheng whispered, lifting his head and casting a sharp gaze in the direction of the campfire, which was particularly bright under the moonlight.
"Hook arranged for his wolf friends to lure out the White Wolf King. Who knows if it'll work? Let's wait ten more minutes. If there's no movement by then, we'll move forward three hundred meters and observe again," Lan Xue suggested in a low voice.
"Alright," Luo Zheng agreed readily, recalling Hook's arrangement with his wolf friends.
Half an hour earlier, upon learning Luo Zheng and Lan Xue were going to snipe the White Wolf King, Hook immediately proposed sending his wolf friends to lure it out. Being Wild Wolves, they wouldn't arouse the enemy's attention. Luo Zheng found it reasonable, though slightly unbelievable, and agreed to give it a try.
Hook's wolves had gone out thirty minutes ago, but there was still no sign of anything. This made Luo Zheng doubt the plan's feasibility. Considering they had just infiltrated the area and were unaware of the enemy situation, they couldn't make any moves. He patiently continued his observation, deciding first to check if there were any sentinels around.
Soon, a sudden howl of wolves startled Luo Zheng. He swiftly moved his sniper scope to observe. In the dark forest, a dozen wild wolves appeared, frantically chasing another wild wolf, and the White Wolf King was among them. Its pure white fur stood out strikingly in the nighttime woods. Luo Zheng was thrilled, quickly taking aim, and in a low voice said, "Xue Er, let's attack together. You take the left, I'll take the right. That beast is almost cunning enough to dodge bullets; be careful."
"Understood, and retreat immediately after. I found a sentinel about two hundred meters ahead," Lan Xue whispered.
"Okay," Luo Zheng agreed wholeheartedly, his eyes closing slightly as he focused his spirit, aiming steadily. A faint killing intent gradually spread, appearing especially eerie among the tree branches under the moonlight.
