Strongest Soldier King

Chapter 1047: The Eerie Wolf King

"Everyone, prepare for battle. Wait for my command before firing." Luo Zheng was surprised by the scene unfolding before him, realizing that the wolves weren't driven by hunger. In such harsh weather conditions, they were evidently here for revenge. Revenge-driven wolves should not be messed with lightly. Luo Zheng gripped the sniper rifle tightly, forcing himself to calm down, as he faintly heard wolf howls from farther away, a hint of worry etched on his resolute face.

"Awoo—!" A powerful wolf howl echoed through the night sky, reaching far into the rainy night, causing hearts to tremble. More terrifying was the pack of wolves that halted their feast on the corpses, glaring fiercely at the cave's position, drool dripping long from their mouths. Their sharp white teeth became crimson, with shreds of meat still clinging to them, yellow eyes glowing eerily in the rainy night, resembling demons emerging from hell.

"Fire or not?" Ghost Hand watched the slowly approaching wolves warily, his expression growing serious.

"Don't fire." Luo Zheng forced himself to stay calm, loudly reminded them, "No one shoot until I give the order."

Everyone had absolute trust in Luo Zheng, forcing themselves to patiently wait. A dozen wolves stared fiercely at them, stopping ten meters away, no longer moving, instead whimpering softly, seemingly communicating. Soon, from the depths of the rainy night came an arrogant wolf howl, carrying an overbearing aura.

Upon hearing this, Luo Zheng's face turned ashen, his brows knitted tightly. As a former Hunter, Luo Zheng knew the Wolf King had arrived. This was a canyon; running meant exposing their backs to the wolf pack, equivalent to courting death. Attacking meant forming a deadly enmity with the wolves. There were already enough enemies around, and provoking the ruler of this primordial forest would make matters even more complicated. Wolves are vindictive creatures. Once tangled with them, it's a fight to the death. What to do?

"Can't wait any longer, shall we attack?" Lan Xue said softly, her tone filled with gravity.

"Don't attack." Luo Zheng answered coldly, eyes fixed fiercely on the wolf pack.

"Awoo—!" Another dominating howl sounded, this time closer. Soon, they heard disordered, restless footsteps and countless whimpering wild wolves. Following this, they saw dozens of wolves as large as calves rushing forward.

These wolves did not launch an attack but merged with the previous pack, immediately dispersing to clear a path. Following this, a wild wolf as tall as an adult appeared before them, entirely snow-white, looking imposing, yellow eyes wide open, emitting a fierce glow, scrutinizing Luo Zheng and his group.

The rain had stopped, but darkness still lingered. The white wolf exuded the aura of a leader, appearing exceptionally eerie in the night canyon. Its orange-yellow eyes emitted a cold light, as icy as an unyielding millennium-old glacier, chilling to the bone. Luo Zheng watched the white wolf warily, knowing it was the Wolf King. Rising slowly, he locked eyes with it, the icy sniper rifle's muzzle firmly targeting the wolf's abdomen. With the sniper rifle's power, one shot could turn the White Wolf King into shreds, yet Luo Zheng did not act, instead choosing to wait.

Wolves are the most intuitive animals, knowing how to avoid danger, knowing what to provoke or not. They watched Luo Zheng coldly, their emotions growing agitated, sensing perhaps their authority was challenged, a signal for potential attack orders.

Luo Zheng's sharp gaze swept past the White Wolf King, examining the wolf pack behind it, densely packed in the night, their number unknown. If a fight broke out, they'd hardly have the upper hand. Even if managing to eliminate the entire pack, losses would be inevitable, a result Luo Zheng did not wish for.

Realizing this, Luo Zheng knew not to anger the White Wolf King. He instructed the surrounding people, "Everyone, retreat into the cave first. Hook, lead your group inside, others shrink the defensive formation slowly into the cave. Do not fire casually, do not move too quickly, keep a normal pace without provoking the wolves."

"Understood," everyone responded.

Hook waved a big hand, leading his group towards the cave first. Initially, they thought they'd spend a night outside the cave and leave the next morning. Uncertain of what lay inside the cave, Hook's group slowly withdrew, their faces sullen, guns aimed at the surrounding wolves, yet remained restrained, refraining from firing.

The White Wolf King watched intently as people retreated into the cave, not launching an attack. Luo Zheng secretly breathed a sigh of relief. After Hook's group retreated, he quickly instructed Zhou Gang to lead his team back too, while he, Lan Xue, Ghost Hand, and Mountain Eagle covered the rear, retreating slowly. Luo Zheng kept a keen eye fixed on the White Wolf King, ready to act if anything unusual occurred, knowing that killing the White Wolf King would scatter the wolves and ensure safety, but the wolves would choose a new king, leading to endless retaliation, a fight to the death. Thus, he dared not act lightly.

Gradually, everyone retreated into the cave. Luo Zheng, Bai Xue, Mountain Eagle, and Ghost Hand guarded the entrance, knowing the cave was relatively safe. Even if the wolves attacked, they'd only come from one direction; not necessarily losing, but Luo Zheng preferred avoiding conflict with the wolves, not out of fear, but to avoid further troubles. The wolf pack, familiar with the terrain and capable of flexible strategies, could launch surprise attacks anytime, challenging to defend against.

Adhering to a mindset of minimizing troubles, Luo Zheng opted for tolerance, yet overlooked this wolf pack's uniqueness, each as large as a cow, not ordinary wild wolves. Their ferocity far exceeded other wolves; wolves bite but don't usually eat humans unless starving.

This robust pack, with aggressive tactics, showed no signs of hunger, yet feasted indiscriminately on corpses. The White Wolf King observed Luo Zheng and his people retreating into the cave, orange-yellow eyes gleaming fiercer with a violent aura, raising its neck to emit a long howl.

"Awoo—!" The sound erupted with a tumultuous force, shaking the canyon with echoes spreading far into the night, akin to a Death God's roar, instilling fear among the beasts, with a chilling aura permeating the area.

"Not good." Luo Zheng's face turned cold, guessing it was the White Wolf King's command for the wolves to prepare an attack, gripping his gun tightly, and keeping a close eye on the White Wolf King. Strangely, he saw a hint of a humanlike smirk flash in the White Wolf King's eyes, causing alarm. Upon blinking and looking again, he saw only a fierce gleam, tightening his heart.

Luo Zheng valued his keen eye and instincts greatly, which had ensured his miraculous survival on countless battlefields. Feeling something odd, he quickly commanded, "Zhou Gang, take two people and explore the cave's depth; we might have trouble."

"Yes," Zhou Gang agreed, taking two people, grabbed tactical flashlights from their backpacks, and ventured inside.

"Everyone prepare for battle," Luo Zheng ordered sternly, looking at the White Wolf King with decisive resolve. Since the wolves refused to relent, they would fight.
