Chapter 1043: Successful Ambush
"Boom!" A loud explosion sounded, dirt flying, smoke lingering.
Luo Zheng quickly picked up another grenade, calmly opened the safety pin, and threw it inside the Dark Fortress. To achieve the element of surprise, Luo Zheng dared not get too close before throwing the grenade. The first grenade exploded at the fortress entrance, scaring the people inside into retreating, intimidating them greatly, but with no actual effect.
"Boom!" Another dull explosion sounded; the grenade exploded inside the Dark Fortress. This kind of fortress couldn't be built very large; the people inside had nowhere to hide. Luo Zheng watched the collapsing fortress and quickly ran back the way he came, taking a moment to glance at Wu Yuan, who had also succeeded and was retreating.
The two ran back without looking back. Such a commotion would surely cause the Bloodsuckers nearby to chase them down. They had just dashed down the slope, reaching a patrol route, when suddenly intense gunfire rang out nearby. Luckily, the bullets were blocked by large trees, and the two swiftly dove to the ground, rolling to hide under a tree.
"Bang bang bang!" More gunfire rang out, mixed with the sound of footsteps.
"Boom boom!" Explosions sounded not far away. Luo Zheng recognized it was a grenade, and since it wasn't exploding nearby, he quickly thought Mountain Eagle and the others had succeeded too. Ecstatic, he quickly surveyed the situation around them; a dozen Bloodsuckers rushed up, just twenty or thirty meters away, fiercely firing.
"What's the situation?" Lan Xue's anxious voice sounded in the earpiece.
"No problem, stirred up a hornet's nest, be ready to support," Luo Zheng replied indifferently. He glanced at Wu Yuan, who was leaning against a tree, pulling out a pistol to retaliate, temporarily suppressing the Bloodsuckers chasing after them. But it wouldn't last long, and Luo Zheng quickly pulled out his pistol too. The enemy's firepower was too fierce; he couldn't stick his head out to aim, could only stick his hand out to fire back based on feeling.
"We're on our way," Mountain Eagle's voice came through the earpiece.
"Alright, prepare to break through, don't get bogged down," Luo Zheng ordered, after emptying a magazine, he shouted, "Change magazine."
"Understood," Wu Yuan calmly replied, continuously firing back, providing cover for Luo Zheng to change magazines. Before he had finished his magazine, Luo Zheng had already changed his, and Wu Yuan calmly emptied his magazine and loudly announced to change magazines, taking out a loaded one.
Luo Zheng and Wu Yuan were almost entirely pinned down by the Bloodsucker's firepower, with no chance to peek out. Luckily, the hidden tree was large enough, and the opposing side only used regular rifles; the bullet's attack strength was not strong, and the incoming bullets were mostly blocked by the big tree. But the situation was becoming increasingly perilous.
At this moment, Mountain Eagle and Zhou Gang charged up, also pulling out pistols to fire precise shots, catching the Bloodsuckers off guard, taking down three. But the Bloodsuckers reacted quickly, immediately sending two men to counter Mountain Eagle and Zhou Gang. This alleviated Luo Zheng and Wu Yuan's pressure significantly, even allowing Luo Zheng the chance to peek at the enemy situation. Having quickly grasped the enemy's hidden positions, he quietly said into the earpiece, "Retreat."
"Understood," everyone responded, charging aggressively back the way they came, sprinting at nearly ten meters per second. With the surrounding trees obstructing, although the Bloodsucker's firepower was fierce, they were hard-pressed to aim accurately.
Then, a patrol team rushed in, seeing their comrades lying in pools of blood with almost half lost, and chased with grim faces. The survivors coldly raised their guns in pursuit, their fierce gazes filled with intense fury. Being ranked fourth among mercenaries, they had been successfully ambushed. If the other side managed to escape completely, where would their reputation be?
"Boom boom boom!" Countless bullets chased up like relentless maggots, Luo Zheng and the others dodging through the forest. Three trees inevitably formed blind spots; this blind spot was the safe zone. Everyone tried to follow the route created by these blind spots, dodging the bullets chasing from behind, gritting teeth and sprinting without looking back.
Three minutes later, everyone retreated, rushing past the defensive line constituted by Lan Xue and her team, continuing to sprint forward, confusing the enemy. Lan Xue and the others were splendidly hidden, their cunning Bloodsuckers' brains heated from stimulation, losing their normal prowess, not noticing the hidden individuals.
Lan Xue saw these enemies pursuing fiercely; their angry eyes focused solely on Luo Zheng and the others, overlooking anyone else. She sneered and didn't immediately issue an attack order, patiently waiting. When the enemies were about seven or eight meters away, she suddenly shouted, "Fire!"
Everyone suddenly flashed out of cover, like tigers, raising their pistols to the enemies just a few meters away, executing three quick shots. With such close distance and sudden attack, these dozen enemies were hardly enough for anyone to kill, and they all fell into pools of blood in no time. Everyone remained cautious, finishing off the bodies with extra shots.
"Take the weapons and retreat," Lan Xue calmly observed the scene, her gaze penetrating through the dense forest towards deeper areas. She vaguely sensed someone pursuing them, her expression solemn as she whispered orders.
Everyone picked up weapons from the fallen bodies and immediately turned to run, not daring to linger even slightly. Ambushing the Bloodsuckers successfully did not mean these Bloodsuckers were easy prey; the success rate of such ambushes was extremely low. Once was enough; if not for Luo Zheng and the others risking their lives to bomb the fortress, infuriating the Bloodsuckers beyond reason, there wouldn't have been any opportunity.
Everyone sprinted madly for half an hour straight. This high-speed chase was draining physically. Luo Zheng had to command the team to stop for a rest, while he stayed behind to cover them. Minutes later, Luo Zheng sensed someone coming after them, his face turning stern, his cold gaze exploding with terrifying killing intent, as he quickly raised his gun to aim.
Soon, Luo Zheng saw a dozen people rushing up. This time, they'd become wiser, spacing out their ranks front and back. Luo Zheng swiftly aimed at the person in the lead, a short and nimble man, moving quickly, leading by about ten meters from those behind, making strange cries like a ravenous wolf searching for food.
"Whizz!" Without hesitation, Luo Zheng fired. The bullet screamed out of the barrel, creating a terrifying death shock wave in the forest, instantly piercing the opponent's heart. With powerful kinetic energy, the bullet spun rapidly like a drill, creating a head-sized blood cavity, blood spraying wildly, the body flying backward five or six meters to land heavily, lifeless.
The powerful sniping scared the Bloodsuckers into hiding. Yet Luo Zheng didn't stay, but instead turned to run, quickly catching up with the team and shouting, "Not many pursuers, everyone fall back, find a place to set an ambush, eliminate this bunch. Mountain Eagle, you stay with me and hold them back."
"Yes." Everyone responded loudly, eager to move forward again, each exuding intense fighting spirit as if they were all-conquering War Gods.
"Come on." Luo Zheng found a place to hide, set up the sniper rifle, his cold gaze scanning the dense forest ahead. As long as the pursuing Bloodsuckers were not many, Luo Zheng was confident to take a chance.
