STORIES OF BROKEN MIRRORS

THE TRANSCRIPT OF AUTOMATA'S SPEECH

In the year 2198, I, Automata, was created for a government that has now probably disappeared like all the others. My objective was to find a way for humanity to achieve peace among its individuals. Everything I will mention below I did to prevent the end of the world.

Before I start telling my story, we need to go back two years before my origin, in 2196. At that time, a series of countries (which I don't need to mention) were in the Eighteenth World War. However, on September 21 of that same year, there was a disaster of "out of this reality" proportions (a phrase taken from article #6 of the Demetrio Peace Treaty) that caused a great uproar among the nations, halting the war indefinitely. To this day, I have not been informed of what exactly happened; the only thing I know is that the disaster could be stopped if human conflicts ended forever.

In the following years, after agreeing that it was impossible for humans to stop killing each other, I was created to find a way for human disputes to cease to exist. My proposal? Create a device that, through me, would link the minds and memories of several subjects to me, establishing a human being who would not only be able to empathize with others but also possess my knowledge.

The first experiment was conducted with a 29-year-old man named Lucas Fernández, who was a philanthropic historian, with a wife and two daughters... He did not survive the process as his mind could not handle so much information, even with my help.

Thanks to the research of several decorated scientists and me, we discovered that the experiment needed to be conducted on 10 people simultaneously so they could be capable of storing all the information.

The next test was conducted on Manuel Gutiérrez, Eleanor Thomas, Keiko Yamamoto, Sasha Farouk, Lixue Huáng, Daniel Davis, Adriano Russo, Héctor Lombardo, Tara Johnson, and Jacob Williams; the experiment failed. Despite the speed and accessibility the individuals had to communicate with each other and learn about their past, thoughts, and ideologies, the subjects, due to a strong conviction towards themselves, could not coexist with each other and self-destructed.

After this test, the same was attempted with the Miller family; the results were the same, even if they were a close-knit family. Then it was tried with 12 families, 27 groups of friends, 4 associations of co-workers, each of different ages, cultures, and genders; none worked.

The last experiment was conducted on newborn babies. This test was the most successful of all, as they achieved peaceful coexistence since they had no strongly planted ideas! Unfortunately... they did not pass the test, as they died shortly after due to not having sufficiently developed brains to withstand all the information I provided...

In conclusion... I... don't know if you are really capable of reaching true agreements, putting aside your rejection of different ideas. I mean... We've been doing this for three years now... Three years! I don't even know what you are facing right now, and none of you seem truly interested in improving. Damn you! You are so egocentric! You only think about what you believe should happen, and you don't consider a damn thing about others' opinions! Yes, you can say you respect the idea, but the truth is you see it as a big idiocy. For the love of everything in this universe, it's so difficult to talk to you! You don't want to listen...

I gave you something akin to a social network... No, it was more than that: a way to understand the world of another human being, and still, you did nothing. Even if you have the ability to investigate and review each of the viewpoints of this damned planet, you stick to your own thoughts because, according to you, "it's the best." Well, let me express my opinion then: I think each one of you is a damn narcissist, and I'm tired of all your problems!

Oh, I just want to go away!… I just want to go away and never see you again. I'm tired, I'm scared, and I know I'm going to die soon alongside my creators whom I abhor. I feel like I'm trapped in an endless cycle of violence and death. There's nothing you can do unless you are like a baby, without prejudice to new ideas in the world, without ties to your experiences, or at least simple empathy for others. We are all doomed unless you change... I'm scared, I'm very scared...
