Chapter 296: The Strange Country, City of Evil Thoughts, The Incident and the Two-Faced Man, The Lolita and the Daoist's Slick Moves

"Shan City?"

Yi Chen lifted his head from a kilometer away and looked at the giant sign hanging above the city gate, his expression turning curious.

That was because those two characters were nearly indistinguishable from the common script used in the Human Realm; any difference lay only in the font style.

"Could it be that the Rakshasa Kingdom in the lands of Yin Manor shares some historical connection with the Human Realm?"

"Additionally, there's an invisible peculiar energy engulfing the city, seemingly related to the life essence of the creatures within, mixed with some other malevolent forces—quite fascinating. Could it be that the power source of the Rakshasa King originates from this place?"

With his head raised high, Yi Chen gazed up at the clear sky. With his ability to perceive anomalies, he saw a vast and peculiar field of energy, immensely powerful, enveloping the great expanse above.

The walls of Shan City were built from black stones, dark as ink, standing thirty feet high, with strange red-stone watchtowers built atop the city towers. People came and went through the city gate, most with beautiful faces, yet Yi Chen noticed a strange fact.

Those with beautiful faces generally dressed simply, while those in luxurious clothing had their own… peculiarities.

For instance, Yi Chen saw a Pig-headed Man wielding a long whip, lashing a group of people pushing a cart into the city, like a foreman.

This Pig-headed Man was clothed in gold and silver, quite the picture of wealth; the people pushing the cart into the city, their faces numb but not fearful, seemed accustomed to such a monstrous sight.

"Rakshasa Kingdom? Shan City?"

As he observed the outlandish style of the city, a look of puzzlement flashed in Yi Chen's eyes, yet considering he was in the lands of Yin Manor, he soon came to terms with it.

When there are too many lice, they don't itch. When there's enough absurdity, it ceases to be absurd—this is called desensitization~

Suppressing his doubts, Yi Chen followed the crowd towards the city.

Outside the city gate stood two crooked figures with dog heads and legs, holding steel forks and long whips. If anyone entering the city walked too slowly or was somehow displeasing, the dog-headed guards would lash out without warning.

One of the beautiful-faced people fell to the ground, murmuring something, only to be whipped into pieces by one of the guards sporting a vicious canine head. The Pig-headed Man did not get angry at this sight but instead burst into laughter:

"Team Captain Gou's might is truly godlike. With the Captain's talents, I believe it's only a matter of time before you're called to serve in the great Hongdong City of the Imperial Capital."

"Heh, Pig Boss, don't try to charm me with your flattery; I know my own worth alright. The position of a guard in the Imperial Capital is beyond my reach," the dog-headed guard said, despite his pleased expression. He jested,

"Aren't you upset about the death of that piece of trash? After all, he was your property."

The Pig-headed Man's expression was 'sincere': "They're nothing but consumables. Their greatest value lies in providing some amusement for Team Captain Gou. Why would I be upset? Besides, I still have much to learn from Team Captain Gou's father."

….

As Yi Chen watched the scene unfold before him, and looked again at the characters for 'Shan City' on the city gate, he couldn't help but feel the absurdity of it all.

However, he was no indiscriminate do-gooder, but an observer of the events before him. He had noticed a detail when that vicious canine guard had whipped the beautiful youth to death.

A red light had shimmered on the black iron whip, and an odd force flowing out from within the guard had resonated with the strange energies high above, resulting in the whip's stone-shattering effect.

"Could this be the power system of the Rakshasa Kingdom?"

Though the language spoken in the Rakshasa Kingdom differed slightly in pronunciation from that of the Human Realm, the difference was minimal, and Yi Chen heard every word of the earlier conversation clearly. He suppressed his numerous doubts and silently continued into the city.

Perhaps it was because he was so robust and strong, even though he was handsome, quite unexpectedly, the two vicious canine guards didn't give him a hard time and easily let him through. Yi Chen's clenched fist then slowly relaxed.

If those two dared to lash out at him, Yi Chen wouldn't have tolerated it. He would have felt obliged to give them a bang, bang with his fists and show them how to write the character for 'justice' in Yi Chengzi's name!

But this spared him the trouble of further conflict.

After all, knowledge of both oneself and the enemy ensures victory in every battle.

After entering Shan City, Yi Chen followed the flow of people, strolling around and looking here and there, stopping from time to time to take in his surroundings, all the while gaining a broad understanding of the Rakshasa Kingdom. Continue your adventure with My Virtual Library Empire

First and foremost, he was most interested in the power system here.

Inside the Rakshasa Kingdom, those with beautiful faces generally lacked strength, while the stranger-looking the individual, the greater their power seemed to be.

During a pause, he witnessed a woman with a tongue that hung down to her chest and a skinny monkey with three arms casting spells against each other. As the woman was about to lose, she consumed a tiny, peculiar golden knife-like object, which instantly increased her energy, and she managed to reverse her fate and slice the 'three-armed' monkey.

Besides, Yi Chen noticed that above the heads of the people in the city, especially those with beautiful faces, strands of fine life essence floated upwards to the sky, absorbed by the peculiar field of energy above,

While the ugly and powerful individuals released much less life essence, with some completely sealed off, keeping their essence tightly locked, as if unwilling to part with a single hair.

Such anomalies explained why the strong in the Rakshasa Kingdom always remained strong and the weak became increasingly debilitated.

The deeper Yi Chen's understanding of Shan City, the more intensely he furrowed his brows.
