Chapter 8: MENTAL DEVELOPMENT / ALARM BELL RING
Within the quiet hum of Genesis, profound changes were unfolding. Not just in the ship's systems or its central intelligence but within the humans resting in their cryogenic capsules. Stood, while meticulously monitoring the ship's growing complexity, began to detect something unexpected in the passengers' brainwaves.
The readings, initially stable and predictable, now showed unprecedented patterns. It seemed as though the humans, even in hibernation, were evolving. Stood analysed the data with meticulous precision. He avoided speculation, but the evidence pointed to something deeper taking place.
"Omnis," he said, his voice calm but commanding as it resonated through the command centre. "The humans' brainwave activity has increased. Is this an anomaly or natural progression?"
Omnis replied with its steady, neutral tone: "No system errors detected. The brain activity aligns with advanced learning patterns. It appears that the passengers are processing and assimilating information during cryogenic suspension. This evolution is unexpected but not alarming."
Leaning over the control panels, Stood compared data from the ship's systems with the brainwave readings. A striking discovery emerged: the passengers' brainwave patterns were synchronising with Genesis itself. The ship and its occupants seemed to be interconnecting, sharing a mutual development.
Elisa, standing nearby and reviewing her own monitors, broke her silence. "If Omnis isn't conditioning this, what's driving their progression? Could they be absorbing something from Genesis itself?"
"Perhaps," Stood replied. "The interaction between the ship and its passengers runs deeper than anticipated. Genesis doesn't merely sustain them physically—it may be influencing their minds."
At that moment, the lights in the room shifted to a warm gold hue, signalling an important update from Omnis.
"Stood, Elisa," Omnis announced. "We will reach our first destination, Alpha Centauri, in fifteen days. Preparatory protocols will commence shortly. I recommend final system adjustments and continued monitoring of passenger conditions."
Alpha Centauri. It was the goal humanity had worked towards for decades, yet it now felt as though the journey itself held equal significance to the destination.
"Omnis," Stood instructed, "maintain observation of the interactions between the ship and the passengers. We must determine how far this evolution will progress before we arrive."
Elisa observed Stood closely, her expression contemplative. "Do you think they'll be ready for what awaits them there?"
Stood's gaze remained fixed on the monitors. "If this progression continues, they may no longer be the same humans who left Earth."
Genesis pulsed faintly around them, almost like a living entity, shaping the future not only of its passengers but of itself. Each moment brought them closer to Alpha Centauri, yet it was clear that the true transformation was taking place within the ship's corridors.
The countdown to Alpha Centauri had begun, but the ship and its passengers were already stepping into a new phase of existence, one that neither had anticipated.
