Starting Today I'll Work As A City Lord

Chapter 246: Chapter 243

"Give me thirty silver coins!" Lucas suppressed a laugh. Sometimes he realized that some of the beastkins were really easy to deceive.

The wolfgirl in front of him had managed to talk herself into this mess. From initially denying she stole the cucumbers, to trying to delay by making excuses to escape, and now, due to her pride, she was voluntarily offering to repay the cucumber debt.

"Th-thirty silver coins?" Freya stared at him with her ember eyes, and after a long pause, she lowered her head dejectedly, bit her lip, and weakly muttered, "I don't have thirty silver coins."

"Then how many silver coins do you have?" Lucas raised an eyebrow, observing the awkward wolfgirl, and sighed, "Just tell me how many you can offer."

"..." Freya was even more flustered now, a red flush spreading across her neck. How could she admit that she didn't have a single silver coin?

"Don't tell me you don't have even a single silver coin?" Lucas's lip twitched, and he saw Freya shake her head slightly.

"Unbelievable..." Lucas slapped his forehead. She didn't have a single silver coin? And yet this wolfgirl had the nerve to act all proud about repaying him for the cucumbers?

He was now wondering how this beastkin had managed to survive until now. Was this how all the beastkins in the beastkin kingdom were like?

"..." Freya didn't say anything. Her wolf ears drooped, and her ember eyes were fixed on the tips of her shoes.

"Do you have anything valuable?" Lucas glanced at the pitted, worn-out greatsword in Freya's hand.

"No!" Freya quickly hid the sword behind her back. It was her prized possession.

"Well, then just leave. You don't need to repay me."

Lucas's eyes twitched slightly. That broken sword probably wasn't even worth more than a few dozen copper coins.

Freya shook her head, her face serious. "I will repay you!"

"..."

Lucas was speechless. This wolfgirl was so stubborn. He had already said she didn't have to pay him back, and yet she still refused to accept it.

If she hadn't helped Helen and Mina, Lucas would have thought about having Freya locked up in a small black room at the guard office for a few days to sober up.

"Young Master, why not have Freya work off the debt?" Mina suggested from the side.

"Huh?" Lucas's eyes lit up. He had been worried about the safety of Annie, Helen, and the others, wondering how to assign guards to them. Now, right in front of him, there was a perfect candidate for a guard.

"Work?" Freya tilted her head, confused by the term.

"It means you'll help the Young Master with tasks in exchange for pay." Mina explained simply. Some of the more unfamiliar words were things she had learned from Lucas.

"Sure, I want one silver coin per day." Freya straightened up, feeling like spending thirty days to repay her debt was a good opportunity to avoid being hunted by Santner.

"What?" Mina stared at Freya with wide eyes, incredulously. "No way! You don't deserve one silver coin a day!"

"Why don't I deserve one silver coin a day? I am a royal knight of the Wolf Tribe from the Kingdom of Valtoria!" Freya bit her teeth and retorted, her expression a bit flustered.

She was doing her best to hide her anxiety. Back at the royal palace, her monthly salary was three hundred copper coins, which was considered a high wage.

"Anyway, you're not worth it," Mina said with a gleam of wisdom in her eyes. "So, tell me, how do you think you're worth one silver coin a day?"

"You... I..." Freya gripped her sword tightly. How could she prove herself? Kill someone? But she could barely protect herself right now.

"Can't say anything, huh?" Mina smirked. "Then it's settled—one silver coin for thirty days of work."

"Fine, one silver coin for thirty day.," Freya said, her tone a little begrudging, but she agreed.

Lucas nodded in agreement, suppressing a smile. "Alright, go back. They should be waiting for you."

"Mm-hmm!" Mina's eyes curved with a smile. Helping to trick the wolfgirl felt rather fun.

She could tell that Freya was exhausted, with some bleeding scars on her body. Mina knew she must have been through a rough time recently.

Mina thought Freya was the type of person who acted tough but had a soft heart, so she quickly decided to resolve things. At the very least, if Freya was going to leave, she should get her wounds treated first.

"Thud, thud, thud…"

Lucas was the first to step out of the greenhouse, and Mina immediately followed. As for Freya's big sword, it was forcibly taken by Aiden, leaving her to follow behind with a sulky expression.

Freya blinked, still in a daze. Something felt off about this situation. She had only 'borrowed' a few cucumbers—how had it escalated to working off a debt?

As they boarded the carriage, Freya continued to frown and ponder, trying to figure out where things had gone wrong, which made Mina struggle to hold back her laughter.

Was there anything wrong? Of course not!

But to Freya, this was the biggest thing that felt off. In the past, she had always solved problems by swinging her sword—no need for reasoning, lectures, or excuses.

If it weren't for the threat of the crossbow earlier, Freya probably would have already drawn her sword and fought. As for returning the cucumbers? Not a chance.

'Huff…'

After a long exhale, Freya, feeling conflicted, finally decided to help for a few days and then sneak off to find the princess.

"What do you want me to do?" Freya sat cross-legged, her arms crossed over her chest, and said, "If it's something like bullying the weak, I won't do it."

"We just need you to protect a few people." Lucas said with a slight smile.

"Okay!"

Freya breathed a sigh of relief. Protecting people was exactly what she was trained to do.

Wait! Freya suddenly turned her head, her eyes locked on Lucas. A storm of thoughts churned in her mind. Why? Why didn't she feel that usual disgust towards this human noble?

It didn't make sense. Besides looking somewhat handsome, smelling pleasant, and having a friendlier demeanor, there was nothing that should attract her to him...

Could it be because of the catgirl nearby? Freya stared in surprise at the two who were sitting so close together.

"Is something wrong?" Lucas asked, looking at the wolfgirl who seemed both surprised and irritated.

"No, nothing!" Freya flicked her long hair and turned her head away. Now that she had calmed down, she realized she still disliked humans, especially the nobility.

Lucas turned to look at Mina, his gaze questioning. Just a moment ago, everything was fine. Why was she suddenly acting so differently?

Mina shook her head, opened her mouth, and silently closed it a few times. Lucas immediately understood, the explanation was simple: 'She's just having a girl's emotional moment.'

He got it now. It seemed that humans had left a very bad impression on the beastkins, or perhaps it was the nobles who had caused so much harm.
