Starting Off By Confessing To My Classmate's Mother

Chapter 49: Chapter 49: A Conversation

When Li Zhiyan returned home, it was already close to midnight.

The door to his mother's room was left ajar. He knew she must have been waiting for him, unable to rest until he was safely back. His mother's habit of worrying over his safety was something he deeply appreciated, even if it sometimes felt unnecessary.

"Mom, I'm home. You can sleep now," he said softly.

"Alright, son. Goodnight."

After plugging in the electric bike to recharge, Zhiyan finally retreated to his room.

---

Settling down, he opened the interface of the Strong Chicken System. The five-thousand-yuan reward from earlier had already been credited to his account. Adding it to his prior savings, he now had a total of 130,000 yuan.

The system's passive earnings of 1,000 yuan per day from the internet café had stabilized his finances, and Zhiyan couldn't help but feel a rush of satisfaction.

"This system's been acting wild lately, posting multiple tasks at the same time. I wonder if it'll issue another mission while I'm waiting for Aunt Gu's task to trigger…"

A thought popped into his head, unbidden, causing his face to flush slightly.

"Man, Fang Auntie's feet are so fair and soft… If only…"

He quickly shook off the thought, though a mischievous smirk lingered on his face.

"What if I… helped her wash her feet next time? You know, to show filial respect?"

Amused by his own wild thoughts, he soon drifted off to sleep.

---

Meanwhile, Fang Zhiya was still awake, scrubbing two pairs of trousers.

The intense heat of summer had left her clothes soaked through, and she meticulously washed them, unwilling to wear them without ensuring they were clean.

But even as she focused on the task, her mind was a chaotic mess of memories.

"That… was it real?"

Her face burned as fragmented recollections from the night before resurfaced. She replayed her slip of the tongue, calling Zhiyan "husband," and his careful ministrations on her injured ankle.

"I must be losing my mind," she murmured. As a traditional woman, she'd never been comfortable with the idea of cutting corners—whether with her thoughts or her grooming habits.

---

The next morning, Zhiyan headed to the Brothers' Internet Café, ready to relax. His friend Li Siyu arrived not long after, bringing along two bottles of chilled soda. Together, they started a game session.

"Zhiyan, business is booming after yesterday! The café was packed last night for the overnight hours," Siyu exclaimed, grinning.

"I did some calculations. We're earning somewhere between 800 and 1,200 yuan per day now! Though I'm curious how things will fare after school starts…"

Zhiyan took a long sip of his soda, relishing the cold carbonation. He leaned back and sighed.

"Good thing I've got the system. Otherwise, I'd be out there hustling like the other reborn folks, grinding away to make a name for myself. This… this is the life," he mused.

Zhiyan had already pieced together a key insight about the system. Its missions always seemed to align with his subconscious desires.

"Don't stress about it, Siyu. Just enjoy the summer. Everything else is under control."

---

Around ten o'clock, Fang Zhiya finally managed to contact her son, Liu Yaolong.

"Son, where are you? I'm heading out to look for a rental today. Can you come with me? I could use your help."

Her voice was calm, but the hint of vulnerability couldn't be missed.

Yaolong, however, was anything but empathetic. His tone was sharp and impatient.

"Why should I go? I'm not living in some dingy rental with you! I'm fine at my classmate's place. Stop bothering me."

There was no mistaking the disdain in his words.

"And seriously, you embarrassed me in front of my classmates when you were out there begging for your salary. Just… don't call me again!"

Before she could respond, the line went dead. Her calls after that went unanswered.

Sitting in stunned silence, tears welled up in her eyes. The son she had doted on since birth now dismissed her entirely. She could hardly believe it.

After some time, she composed herself and retrieved the pants drying on the balcony. The sunlight had erased any signs of yesterday's troubles, but the memories remained vivid in her mind.

At 11 o'clock, she hesitated before dialing a familiar number.

---

"Zhiyan, where are you now?"

"I'm at the internet café, Auntie."

"Would it be alright if I came to see you?"

"Of course! I was hoping you'd come by. I'd love to talk with you."

Hearing his warm, enthusiastic response brought a small smile to her face. For a moment, she forgot the weight on her shoulders.

"Alright, I'll be there shortly."

After ending the call, a warmth spread through her heart. Despite everything, this boy had been her constant source of support. Unlike her son, whose words cut deeply, Zhiyan's kindness was like a balm to her soul.

---

Back at the café, Zhiyan finished his game with Siyu and leaned back, stretching his arms.

"You done already, Zhiyan?" Siyu asked, surprised.

"Someone's coming over," Zhiyan replied casually.

"Oh? Who?" Siyu leaned in, eyes alight with curiosity.

"Fang Auntie, Liu Yaolong's mom," Zhiyan said with a small smile.

Siyu's jaw dropped in mock reverence. "Damn, Zhiyan. You're a legend! Who'd dare cross you now? Anyone messes with you, and you'll hit 'em where it hurts—by giving their mom a second child!"

Zhiyan groaned, waving off his friend's ridiculous remarks. "Cut it out, man. Don't spout nonsense."

Still chuckling, Siyu raised his hands in mock surrender.

When he spotted Fang Zhiya approaching outside, Zhiyan hurried to greet her.

---

"Fang Auntie, you're here!" Zhiyan greeted warmly, stepping forward to take her hand.

But Zhiya instinctively pulled back, a faint blush dusting her cheeks.

"Thank you for yesterday, Zhiyan," she said softly. "If it weren't for you, I don't know what I would've done."

"Don't mention it, Auntie. I just did what I could."

"Oh, right! You said you'd help me set up a QQ account, didn't you? I've never used one before."

Zhiyan smiled. He could tell she had something on her mind, but he wouldn't pry.

"Of course, Auntie. Come on in. I'll set it up for you."
