RYST

"Oh stars!" I laughed. An animated Peydran moped down the hospital corridor in a sexy nurse outfit gloomily wondering why no one would talk to him. His butt cheeks were hanging out of tight white short shorts. "Oh, Jasen and Alen— they really are the best!" I wheezed.

Peydran laughed and played it again. "Love the ass shorts. So detailed. Didn't know how much time they spent studying my back side!"

Ten days had passed, and Peydran was doing as well as could be expected. Or, maybe a little better. He seemed focused on getting the research, nutrition, and therapy going. As far as I could tell, he was in pretty good spirits. He was working, but holding off on new clients. I knew that had taken some of the wind out of his sails because the launch had gone so well, and he didn't want to miss out on potential clients, but he said he had to be reasonable and put his recovery first. He didn't seem too worried about the nutrition changes and just took everything in that "here's-what-we're-doing-now-full-speed-ahead" way he had.

"Alright, Ryst. I'm all caught up. What are you talking about today? I'm ready for another story."

"Want me to get a graphic or something? I could read you a book or—

"What?! Read me a book? Am I five? Or illiterate? No, tell me something about you. Tell me about the Talent. What's going on with it? Zap me with it. Or someone else. Like the next person who comes in, whammy them with your super brain!"

"I think you need to give parodies a rest for a while, Peydran. I don't whammy people!" I rolled my eyes.

"Well, then, what's the story? We were supposed to study this and figure it out. I surely haven't forgotten falling asleep with you cradling me like an infant because you broke through my mind shield and became one with me."

My face fell in horror.

"Oh, no, Ryst, no, I'm sorry! I didn't mean it like that. I'm so sorry. No, don't be upset—"

"No," I shook my head. "No, Peydran, that isn't what happened. I've been thinking about it. We should study it from your viewpoint and mine. Because that's the only time it's happened. We've been here talking for days, and you're still a blank to me. I think— I think you reached out to me. Like…". I stared out into thin air.

"In my dreams… you know how I told you that I'm always reaching out? Well, I think you were so desperate, that some part of you, some instinctual part of you that wanted something to hold onto so you wouldn't drown just— reached out. I felt it. Everything. How horrifying it was for you, and I just instinctively did what a mother would do for a child; or a sister, or a friend. Someone who just couldn't stand by and let you drown. My inner self wrapped around you automatically. I didn't even think about it. It just happened. And I comforted you, right? You felt it?"

He swallowed thickly. "Yeah. I mean, I was completely— lost? Agonized? Horrified? The images of the accident just kept flooding my brain. It all smashed into me at once, and it was— utter devastation. And then, I felt like a warm blanket wrapped around me. Well, it was around, but it was inside. Like in my stomach and chest. And I still felt like I was gonna die from the agony inside me, but it felt like something was holding me together. Loving me. Willing me to know that I wasn't alone."

Tears streamed down his cheeks and mine. "I think I heard you. I'm not sure. It wasn't exactly words. But it felt like, 'I love you. I love you.' And that voice was something I could hold onto. Thank you, Ryst. I love you too."

We looked at each other in the eyes, tears streaming down our cheeks. "I love you too, Peydran. And since we're already crying, I'll tell you another story. You'll be the only person who knows about my Ahtah."
