RORY

"Oh, this will work," Rhianne assured me.

I sure hoped so. Three-year-old Switch was dressed in nothin' but a tee shirt in our backyard. Nearby, Rhianne and Susette's daughter Lena kicked a ball, and little Bitsy looked on, sitting in the grass with her thumb in her mouth. We had picnic blankets spread on the ground and were snacking on the lunch Susette'd brought, but the main focus of the day was getting Switch outta diapers.

"Definitely gonna work," Susette agreed. "Lena got it that first day, and they say boys catch on even quicker. You already know this, Rory, since you and Slydar have so many nieces and nephews. Relax, hon, he's gonna figure it out. As soon as that pee goes all over him and not in a diaper, his little boy brain is gonna figure out he can spray anything he wants, and it'll be a fun new game to play in the yard," she cackled.

Yeah, Slydar's son was gonna have a jolly good time once he figured out what diaper-free life was like, and as long as it was all outside, I didn't really care if it meant one less bum wrapped in nappies.

We laughed and joked as my gals got me caught up on what all was going on with them, and the mirka Sal hopped around playing with the kids. Susette's folks'd moved from Trauton 4 to Nineton right after Lena was born because they didn't want to miss out on their granddaughter's childhood, so their family had a lot of support like ours.

Susette'd confided to her parents that she had skills with animals that went beyond the ordinary, and they'd believed her. She didn't go so far as to tell them that Five Spheres was a place for people with even more outlandish abilities than hers, but she let them know that Dr. Snowden had specifically recruited her for the vet clinic because of her animal communication Talent. Encouraged by their acceptance, she and Rhianne were hopeful that someday they'd be able to tell her parents the whole truth.

Rhianne wasn't generally vocal about her Talent, but she and Susette didn't hide it from Lena. No, their little girl knew all about everything and everyone who was special, and if she told her grandparents that one of her mommies could turn water into mist, well, then it was up to them to decide if that was a child's imaginings or not.

Watching them navigate that difficult path made me all the more grateful that I'd never had to contemplate such a thing, and I told my parents often how glad I was to be their daughter.

Susette grabbed my arm pointing to Switch who was looking down at his waist. Then he looked up, face grimacing like he was about to cry, but we all jumped up, excited, celebrating and whooping with joy.

"Switch! You did it!" I sent him feelings of comfort and happiness, and watched his little face shift into a smile as Lena leapt up and down cheering him on.

Bitsy joined in, and eventually Switch decided to be happy about the pee all over him. I pulled off his wet tee shirt and gave him a fresh one to wear, and we all celebrated with peanut butter brownies.

We stayed out in the sun, giving Switch another brownie and plenty of milk to drink in the hopes for a repeat occurrence.

"Rory, I think while the weather is warm, we should all go up to The Cabin with the kids. I know you think of it as a special Mommy-and-Daddy-time place, but I know the kids'll have so many good memories of playing in the creek and getting messy—"

"I know, Susette, and I don't disagree. I'm just worried about the water and the height of the porch. This summer just feels too soon for Bitsy. I'd be afraid the whole time. They need some swimming lessons first, so maybe I can do that with them this winter, and by next year I'll feel better about taking them up there."

"Yeah," she nodded. "I'll look into the swimming lessons too. Maybe we can do that together so we'll all be ready by next summer, whaddaya think, Rhianne?"

Her wife nodded, "We can go ahead and start taking Lena ourselves. I've never taught a kid to swim, but I think if she's having fun in the pool, she won't mind it once it's time for classes."

Rhianne looked at me concerned, but also a little whiff of mischief rolled off her telepathically. "Wanna go to the pool next week, Rory? With all three of us, we'd have one adult for each kid."

I grinned. It wasn't a bad idea. "Okay, I'm in, but I think Slydar will wanna go too, so let's find a day he's off work. Deal?"

"Deal," they nodded. Then Switch squealed and pronounced that he peed again and needed another brownie.

Susette'd been on point; Switch figured out what potty training was real quick like, and we had one less child in diapers when we made it to the pool the next week.

Both kids loved the water and took to swimming lessons well. Bitsy was too little to actually swim, but she learned the basics of floating so by the time the next summer rolled around, I felt comfortable with the weekend-at-The-Cabin getaway that Rhianne and Susette planned for our two families.

I didn't know how important that little trip would turn out to be. But that's how life is, isn't it? It just keeps surprising you, and sometimes those surprises are awesome.
