SHAH

"Is that what we're gonna do? Set up Rory? And what? Right on the heels of Muller and Slick's wedding? What does that do, Shah?"

"It's called foreshadowing, Euri. We have a sweet girl who's a natural-born true telepath. We have a bad ass couple in another galaxy who are both strong telepaths. We didn't mention their kids, but we didn't say they don't have kids. What more could anyone want from a Known Cosmos story?"

"Well, I think they're gonna want to know more about us. I mean, we spent all that time with the Friend of the Wind story arc. And all that sexy stuff about the alternate reality we keep going to. We've got to resolve all those plot lines, Shah."

"But Euri, we don't understand our lives! Our lives make no sense. We aren't plot lines; we're people!"

"Yeah, but we're trying to tell a story to let people know that there's a lot more going on in the Known Cosmos than they realize."

"Haven't we done that, Euri? I mean, we've put all of our history here, written it all out for everyone to see. It's probably gonna get animated by the next generation."

"Yeah, well, what do we really want to say in book three, Shah?"

"That if you're out there, and you feel alone, well, read this book. Then find your way to Five Spheres. But Euri, these books won't be publicized for decades!"

"So what are we gonna do?"

"You wanna write a new season of Eclipse Chasers based on us? Get our story out there?"

"I think it'll be good. Don't you?"

"Well, we have all these plot holes, as you mentioned."

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

"We could make something up. How do you want it to end, Shah? You and me? We're not having kids, right?"

"Euri, I'm forty-six. I'm not making babies with you."

"Agreed. What are we doing the rest of our lives then? Sphere hopping? Writing funny stories?"

"To be honest, I'm bored with the Known Cosmos, Euri. Aren't you? I mean, things have gotten so, so good in our little escape sessions post climax. We've got a whole other world to play in now. It's like when we used to use the scalp relays to create VR worlds, but it's an actual, real alternate reality. Are you ready to go there? Or do you want to stay with your family? Rory's only fifteen. You know how it felt when Ryst and Nayth left when you were a kid."

"Let's wait a bit. Can you wait, Shah? 'Til our parents are gone, maybe?"

"That could be a long time, Euri."

"What's the hurry?"

"Boredom."

"Then let's get really, really good at building our other world. You know what that means, Shah."

"Are you coming onto me right now?"

"Is it working?"

"You still got it, babe."

EURI

"Alright, Shah. We've done what we said we would. Rory's not a kid anymore; it's time for her story. You ready, baby?"

"It's okay to grieve, Euri."

"But he's not really dead."

"His cremains tell us otherwise."

"Muse didn't really die, though. He left, Shah. He sang his last song, and then he left his body. We know where he is. We've been going there since we were twenty-three."

"I know, baby, but it still hurts that he's gone."

"What going to happen to us, Shah? When we go for good to our other world? Will we leave bodies behind? Will it tear our families apart? Break their hearts?"

"We can tell them, Euri. My mom and dad are already long gone. For all I know, they'll be waiting there with Ryst and Nayth and Muse. Mets probably doesn't have much longer here either. Your dad's eight-eight, for clouds' sakes, and you know all he wants in the world is to be with Ren."

"What, you think if we leave then Mets will just pass on? Shah, this is the least comforting conversation I've ever had in my life."

"Are you ready to grieve for your dad yet, Euri?"

SHAH

We're ready, Ronnie.

We are too.

Are we really all gonna leave at the same time? Leave Rory on her own?

She knows she's never on her own. She's fine, Shah. She's a grown woman with kids of her own. We're all the ones hanging on. Mom, Dad, Ren. They're all already gone. How much longer do you want to wait?

I don't. I just don't want the kids to be upset if we all vanish at once. I mean, we don't even really know what's going to happen.

You two go first, then. Cyn and I can wait.

. . .

I felt your heartbeat skip, Shah. And it wasn't fear. It was excitement. Go. Everything is going to be fine.

And I believed him.

I took off Euri's clothes. One last time.
