Chapter 17: The UNSC in the Senate
Senator Padmé Amidala watched the Spartan Arnet as he scanned the holotable with unwavering concentration. From her first encounter with him, Padmé had noted his intimidating bearing and relentless focus. With his cold, calculating gaze, Arnet seemed more machine than human, someone who moved with military precision, imbued with ironclad discipline and no room for trivialities. For her, approaching him was not easy; she felt that any attempt at conversation would be met with a wall of silence or strictly formal responses.
However, she needed to inform him of what the Senate had discussed: the formal request for her to appear before the assembly. She took a breath and moved toward him, trying to make her tone of voice sound calm and approachable.
"Admiral Arnet," Padmé began, hoping to catch his attention. The Spartan turned his head, giving her a brief glance before nodding to indicate that he was listening.
"The situation in the Senate has been... complex. As you can imagine, your arrival and the UNSC's success on Naboo have generated a lot of reaction." Padmé paused briefly, seeking his reaction. "The Galactic Senate has voted and formally requested that you appear before them. Their purpose is to get to know you better and understand on what terms an alliance might be cemented."
Arnet barely reacted, though Padmé noticed his cool, serene eyes studying her silently. "Are you requesting us as guests, or are you seeking to assess us as a threat?" Arnet asked, straight to the point and in a neutral voice.
"I understand your concern," Padmé replied, remaining calm, "but this is an opportunity to show them who you really are. The Senate still doesn't fully understand your goals, and some factions are uncomfortable not knowing the extent of your military strength."
Arnet nodded slowly, turning his gaze back to the holotable. "If they need a demonstration of our goals, I will be clear and concise with them. We are not here to conquer. Our mission is to eradicate the Covenant and bring peace back."
Padmé nodded, somewhat relieved that he showed no resistance. "I appreciate your understanding. I understand that your focus is military, but politics here follows another rhythm. If the Senate sees the logic in your words, I am sure that the alliance we so desperately need will be established."
Outside Theed Palace, at the base shared by the UNSC and the Republic, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Aayla Secura walked among the soldiers and the bustle of operations. The base, largely built by the UNSC, was impressive with its massive structure and precise organization, and the presence of troops from both sides working together was an unusual but hopeful sight.
Aayla looked around the base with a mix of wonder and caution. To her, the presence of the UNSC was both a blessing and a disturbing unknown. She couldn't help but think of the ramifications of their arrival and how it could affect the Republic in the long run.
"Isn't that impressive, Master Kenobi? But also... disturbing," Aayla commented, her eyes narrowing as she looked at a few Spartans patrolling the area, imposing and intimidating figures despite being at peace. "I can't help but think of the ambitious politicians in the Senate, what they might try with a force like this on their side. And if the UNSC ever decided that the Republic was an obstacle... it could mean our downfall."
Obi-Wan listened intently, understanding her concerns. He had pondered them as well, but his connection to the Force gave him a degree of peace that he felt was important to share with her.
"I understand, Aayla. It's natural that you have doubts. After all, we've seen how politicians can twist anything to their advantage, and war has taught us not to blindly trust anything or anyone," Obi-Wan replied, placing a hand on her shoulder. "But the Force... The Force tells me that they are here to help us, and I sense no threat from them."
Aayla looked at him with a mix of respect and doubt, her eyes reflecting her concern, but her master's words had a calming effect. "Does the Force... show you that?" she asked in a whisper, as if she needed to confirm what she heard.
"Yes, it does," Obi-Wan said with a serene smile. "The UNSC has already shown us on Naboo that they share our goal of eradicating the Covenant, not becoming a power of oppression. I don't sense in them the same dark purpose that we sense in the Separatists."
Aayla sighed, letting relief settle in her heart, though still with some wariness. "I hope you are right, Master. But still, time will tell if they are truly on our side."
"I know, Aayla," Obi-Wan replied. "For now, we must focus on the present and the challenges before us. If the Force guides us to accept their aid, then let us follow that path cautiously, but without fear."
The two of them stood in silence for a moment, gazing out at the horizon and letting their thoughts flow.
As the afternoon progressed, the Spartan Arnet-096 was busy organizing the logistics for their departure to Coruscant. The journey would be led by the majestic Infinity, the flagship of the UNSC, leaving the rest of the fleet under the strategic command of Admiral Preston Cole and the ground army in charge of Captain Jacob Keyes, who would be in charge of keeping the peace on Naboo and coordinating the defense alongside the Republic.
Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Aayla prepared for the journey, though in an unexpected twist, Aayla expressed a desire to travel aboard the Infinity rather than on the Republic ships. Though surprised, both Obi-Wan and Anakin agreed, also motivated by curiosity to see how a ship of such magnitude and technology operated. Arnet, noticing the Jedi's interest, extended an invitation to give them a tour of the ship during the journey, which was met with immediate acceptance.
The last member of the group to join the party was Senator Padmé Amidala, who was also scheduled to report to Coruscant and, after learning the flight plan, decided to accompany them aboard the Infinity. The ship would be their return transport, and the opportunity to learn more about their unexpected allies deeply intrigued her.
Once everyone was ready, they were escorted by marines to the Infinity's main cargo bay. The metal behemoth, with its vast compartments and flawless steel corridors, was impressive in its capacity and advanced technology. As they moved through the halls and observed the weaponry, command rooms, and UNSC personnel going about their business, it became clear that this ship was not simply a transport, but an imposing fortress.
"Welcome to the Infinity," Arnet announced in a businesslike tone. "It is one of the most advanced structures in the UNSC, and while we have designed it for combat and exploration, there are certain amenities you will enjoy while on board. Upon arrival at Coruscant, each of you will be assigned a liaison officer to coordinate your security and any additional logistics."
Aayla, looking around the ship's layout, seemed impressed by the order and military precision that prevailed. "I have never seen a ship of this magnitude... it looks like a small city in motion," she commented.
"It is efficient," Arnet replied, "but it was not created to be seen, but rather to serve as a shield in the fight we have been waging for years against the Covenant. Although here we hope you will not have to experience the worst of its capabilities."
Anakin, with curious and admiring eyes, nodded. "There is no doubt that this will be an... eye-opening trip."
As they made their way to their quarters, Padmé took the opportunity to closely observe the coordination and discipline of the personnel. The lights of the ship, the constant sound of the consoles and the activity in every corner gave them a first impression of the scope and dedication of this organization that they were only just beginning to get to know.
Finally, Arnet left them in their compartments, promising them a visit to the bridge the next day to explain some of the Infinity's key functions.
-x.X.x-
Arnet was watching the monitors on the bridge, his eyes serious and marked by exhaustion, when Serina's hologram appeared in front of him with a determined expression and a sharp gaze.
"What do you want, Serina?" he asked, trying not to divert his attention from the reports.
"When was the last time you slept, Admiral?" Serina replied in an inquisitive tone.
Arnet sighed, running his hand over his helmet in an automatic gesture. "I don't remember," he admitted bluntly. "Have you gotten any additional information on the Covenant?"
Serina, in an exasperated tone, replied, "Admiral, if you want, I can hack into the entire Republic database... Don't change the subject! You have dark circles under your eyes to rival a raccoon. You need rest."
"I can't afford that yet," Arnet said, curt but not aggressive. His gaze returned to the data on the bridge.
Serina crossed her virtual arms, projecting a reproachful expression. "Pure excuses, Admiral."
Arnet leaned back in his seat, his face hardened. "We must find a way to replenish our soldiers. The Infinity can replace and repair machinery without trouble, as long as we have materials, but the soldiers… the soldiers are irreplaceable," he said in a low but firm tone. "Every casualty affects us, and this war extends further than we imagine. If I don't do something now, our effort will fall apart."
Serina softened her tone, understanding the seriousness in Arnet's voice. "Admiral, I know. But an effective strategy requires a leader in full capacity."
Arnet looked at her for a moment. "This war waits for no one, Serina. If we don't act now, there will be no next generation of soldiers to fight."
"I understand, Admiral. But… it will take more than willpower to keep going. Let me handle some of these matters while you rest," Serina suggested, lowering her voice a little. "For now, we have to survive. And that starts with you."
Arnet didn't answer right away. He knew his AI was right, but he couldn't afford to stop. Finally, he nodded. "Okay, Serina. Arrange a temporary command rotation. I'll take a short break… just for today."
"Finally, a sensible decision," Serina said, with a flash of satisfaction.
-x.X.x-
Serina projected her hologram ahead, leading Senator Padmé Amidala and the Jedi through the halls of the UNSC Infinity, escorted by several soldiers. The AI, always in her calm and professional tone, began the tour of the hangar bay. The visitors looked in awe at the military ships and vehicles lined up, repaired, and resupplied in a structure so massive it looked like a city within the ship. The scale and level of organization impressed everyone.
Serina continued the tour, leading them into the manufacturing areas and internal factories of the Infinity. "Thanks to these facilities, the Infinity is almost completely self-sufficient," Serina explained. "We can manufacture and repair most of our tools and equipment right here, without needing to rely on outside supplies." Padmé watched intently at the assembly lines, the metallic gleam of freshly forged parts, and the constant sound of automated work. It was clear that this ship was designed to hold up on the battlefield for the long haul.
Passing through the gyms, the Jedi and the senator noticed several Spartan-IIs training without armor, practicing hand-to-hand combat techniques and performing strength exercises. The visitors were impressed not only by the Spartans' physical ability, but also by their focus and dedication, worthy of soldiers forged at an extreme level. The Jedi shared looks of respect and curiosity, seeing in these soldiers a type of discipline that resonated with their own training.
Then, in the recreation rooms, the visitors noted the variety of the facilities: from flight simulators to rest areas, gaming tables, and surprisingly, a bar, where some soldiers spent their free time. Serina commented in a light tone, "Morale is as vital as strategy, and this space is to help keep the crew in top condition."
Finally, Serina led them to Memorial Park. It was a unique space within the ship, filled with carefully cultivated vegetation, stone paths, and commemorative plaques bearing names of soldiers fallen in battle. The atmosphere was solemn, and unlike the other areas, the silence here seemed sacred. Senator Amidala and the Jedi felt the weight of the losses this army had endured. Serina, in a respectful tone, explained, "This park is a reminder of all we have sacrificed in the war against the Covenant. It is a place of remembrance and respect, and also to remember those who continue the fight."
Serina led the group into a deep section of Infinity: the War Zone. As they approached, reinforced doors opened to reveal a vast area equipped with all manner of simulators and modular combat structures, configurable to the tactical needs of each mission. The environment was a combination of physical training areas, simulated combat zones, and technologically advanced spaces for weapons and tactics testing.
"This is the War Zone," Serina explained in a businesslike voice, "an intensive training facility. Here, Soldiers and Spartans can practice in realistic combat simulations in different environments and settings. In addition, new equipment is also tested and battle strategies are fine-tuned in conditions almost identical to the real thing. It's essential for Soldiers to stay in top condition."
Upon entering, visitors noticed that the activity in the area was constant. Spartans, Marines, and other soldiers were practicing in a series of exercises and simulations. The walls were equipped with screens that showed different battle scenarios in real time, and the sounds of simulated gunfire, explosions, and commands echoed through the space.
As they walked, Serina led them to an area where several soldiers were engaged in combat practice. There, among the uniformed figures, they spotted Arnet. Dressed in his armor, he was personally leading a group of Spartans in a tactical exercise. Arnet's orders were precise, and his presence seemed to convey discipline and confidence to the soldiers. His firm voice echoed as he gave strategic directions, helping to coordinate each move.
Padmé and the Jedi watched in silence, impressed by Arnet's dedication and precision in action. Anakin exchanged a glance with Ahsoka, acknowledging the military commitment that characterized the Spartan. Jedi Master Aayla Secura felt somewhat intimidated, sensing Arnet's intensity in every movement and every word.
As they watched from a raised platform, the scene before the visitors looked like an actual battlefield. Arnet and his team moved with tactical precision, facing simulations of Covenant forces in a surprisingly detailed replica of a hostile environment. Explosions, gunfire, and smoke filled the area as the Spartans advanced with relentless efficiency, moving like lethal shadows across the terrain.
Anakin, impressed and somewhat perplexed, looked at Serina. "What exactly are Spartans? Why do they seem so superior to any soldier I've ever seen?"
Serina smiled slightly before answering, careful of her words. "Spartans are the elite of our forces, created with one goal: to confront the most critical threats to humanity. Each Spartan goes through rigorous training from a very young age, long before entering the battlefield."
Ahsoka watched in fascination. "And how do they manage to be so strong? They seem almost… superhuman."
"They are the result of an advanced combination of physical, mental, and technological training," Serina explained, keeping the conversation in highly technical terms. "Their bodies are enhanced through a series of processes and equipment, including the Mjolnir armor, which increases their strength, speed, and endurance. Thanks to this, they can perform tasks and maneuvers that would be beyond the reach of any regular soldier."
Padmé frowned slightly, sensing that there was more to the story, but Serina kept her explanation carefully upbeat. "The Spartan program was conceived to ensure that our forces were ready to face any kind of threat. As you can see, their combat capabilities are exceptional."
As she spoke, Arnet and the other Spartans in the simulation advanced without a misstep, eliminating each target with surgical precision. To observers, the Spartans seemed nearly indestructible, a calculating force that erased any trace of simulated resistance in their path.
Anakin, impressed, couldn't help but comment: "It's incredible. I've never seen a combat unit so precise and effective."
Serina nodded. "That's right, General Skywalker. And they are exactly what we need to wipe out the Covenant in this galaxy."
As everyone watched the Spartans' brutal efficiency in the war zone, admiration was evident on the faces of those present. Aayla Secura and Anakin exchanged glances, both aware of the advantage these supersoldiers could bring to a war against the Covenant. The idea that the UNSC had managed to not only create soldiers of such endurance and skill but train them to such lethal perfection was astonishing.
To the Jedi, these Spartans were familiar in some ways, reminding them of the physical limits they themselves could break through with the Force. However, these soldiers did so without the Force; they were soldiers created and enhanced in an unprecedented physical and biological process. To the Republic, the sight of these soldiers was both inspiring and somewhat unsettling.
It was then that Serina interrupted the demonstration. "Attention, everyone," the AI began in her calm but determined voice. "We are about to exit hyperspace. Our arrival will be immediately noted by the Coruscant defense forces, and we must take immediate diplomatic measures to ensure a proper introduction. I recommend that you prepare for their arrival."
-x.X.x-
The appearance of the Infinity in orbit around Coruscant was an imposing sight, and to many Republic citizens, disconcerting and even alarming. The massive five-kilometer ship, with its angular and unfamiliar design, cast an imposing shadow over the city-planet. Instantly, a collective whisper of unease spread among the inhabitants, followed by a torrent of urgent calls to the Coruscant Guard and local security stations.
Intergalactic news platforms erupted into activity, live-streaming the image of the giant ship and speculating about its purpose, origins, and potential threat. On the streets, citizens watched the skies with a mixture of fear and curiosity, some clinging to the hope that the powerful ship was an ally, while others murmured their doubts and fears.
At the Senate command center, reports came in unceasingly. Security sensors were on high alert, as Coruscant's space patrols and the Republic Fleet detachment stood by.
The chaos quickly escalated. Many citizens, seeing the massive ship in the sky, made the decision to rush back to their homes, fearful of the unknown. The normally vibrant streets of Coruscant began to empty out, as authorities tried to maintain order and calm the crowd.
"Is it friend or foe?" some muttered, as they watched the news with faces full of uncertainty. Others, however, did not stop to speculate and sought the shelter of their homes or hid in government buildings, fearful that an invasion was about to begin.
Official statements had yet to provide a response, and confusion increased with every second. Some voices tried to reassure the population, insisting that the ship was allied with the Republic, but others feared it was a sign of something worse.
The Pelican landed smoothly on the designated platform, and the ramp unfolded with precision. Arnet was the first to descend, dressed in his admiral's uniform, with a firm and determined presence that conveyed authority and experience. At his side, escorting him, two fully armed Spartan-IIs in their imposing armor advanced with calculated and coordinated steps, each of them emitting a sense of power that had rarely been witnessed on Coruscant.
The floating cameras moved closer, capturing every detail. Murmurs among the spectators soon arose, whispering questions and theories.
"Are those... soldiers or machines?" said one, looking perplexed at the gigantic armored figures. "They don't look human."
"Robots perhaps? Perhaps they are autonomous weapons," commented another in a trembling voice.
The presence of the Spartans, with their visors glowing and combat stances, generated an instinctive fear in all present.
Arnet was greeted with a scene of great importance. Chancellor Palpatine himself was there, surrounded by a small group of Jedi Masters, including Master Yoda, Mace Windu, and Kit Fisto. The presence of these leaders made clear the weight of this meeting and the recognition of the newcomers.
"Welcome to Coruscant," Palpatine said, with his characteristic smile and a diplomatic tone. "I deeply appreciate the efforts that you and your team have put into securing the first victory in this war against the Covenant. It is an important victory not only for Naboo, but for the Republic as a whole."
Arnet, still escorted by two Spartans, stepped forward and saluted formally. "Thank you, Chancellor. Our purpose is to eradicate the Covenant threat from this galaxy, and Naboo was only the beginning."
The Jedi Masters watched with interest and caution. Master Yoda, with his deep understanding of the Force, watched him closely. Though they were allies, he sensed a presence and determination in Arnet that, while not hostile, was singular. Mace Windu nodded respectfully.
"We have seen what your forces are capable of," Windu said, his tone firm. "Your contribution has been vital to our success on Naboo, and we hope that our alliance will strengthen both sides in this fight."
Padmé, standing next to them, looked at Arnet with a mixture of respect and curiosity, noting the impact his arrival had had on the entire Republic. She heartily thanked the UNSC for their protection and support, acknowledging the sacrifice and loss they had suffered in their effort to protect Naboo.
"Senator Amidala, our planet has been brave in this crisis, and with the help of the Republic and the UNSC, we hope to restore peace and security throughout the galaxy," Palpatine added.
Arnet nodded. "It is our duty. We will continue to support you in this fight, though I must stress that the Covenant is an unprecedented threat. We will be ready to face them at your side, but we must take action immediately."
The atmosphere on the landing platform was charged with expectation and wonder, but Chancellor Palpatine, aware of the importance of the occasion, insisted that formalities be postponed until they reached the Senate. Thus, all present boarded several Republic transports that would take them to the Grand Galactic Senate.
During the ride, Padmé Amidala approached Arnet, taking advantage of the moments before to give him some instructions on the development of the session. "I will speak first to calm things down and smooth the introduction of your arrival," she explained in a calm and confident voice. "Then, depending on how the situation develops, I will give you the floor."
Arnet nodded with a firm look, understanding the importance of diplomacy in that first official appearance of the UNSC before the Galactic Republic.
Upon arriving at the Senate, the platforms were packed with senators from all over the galaxy, who watched with expectation the entrance of the Naboo platform. The session began as the Naboo delegation, accompanied by the UNSC, took their position on the same platform as Senator Amidala.
The meeting was about to begin, and the UNSC was finally in the center of galactic attention.
