Chapter 18: Gang registration
The early evening air at the Gamblo family compound carried an electric tension as three figures emerged from the shadows of the entrance gate.
Metal gates groaned shut behind them, the sound echoing across the stone courtyard. The gathered family members immediately recognized Larry and Raxa, but it was the third person between them that caused an instant reaction.
Zilant walked calmly alongside them, his steady gait betraying no sign of captivity, and the family's sharp eyes didn't miss the crucial detail - his hands were completely unbound.
The sound of multiple weapons being drawn sliced through the silence, their barrels gleaming in the fading light as they trained on the newcomer.
Several urgent voices called out to Larry and Raxa to move aside, their tones carrying both concern and confusion. The family members' fingers hovered near triggers, their training evident in their perfect form despite the unexpected situation.
Years of discipline kept their aim steady, even as their minds struggled to process the scene before them. The evening breeze carried the metallic scent of weapons and the subtle tension of forced restraint.
Larry maintained his position, his voice carrying the same steadiness that had earned him respect among the family. "Calm down," he said, his words measured and firm. "Everything is under control." His posture remained relaxed despite the arsenal pointed in their direction, a subtle display of confidence that made several family members exchange uncertain glances. The weight of his authority seemed to press against the wall of weapons facing them.
The compound's main door opened with a heavy creak, and Hime stepped out onto the scene. Her calculated footsteps brought her closer to the group as she surveyed the situation, her expression hardening with each step. The setting sun cast long shadows across her face as she demanded, "Why haven't you killed him yet?" Her voice carried across the courtyard with unmistakable authority, making even the most seasoned family members tighten their grips on their weapons.
"Killing is not the proper action," Larry responded, meeting her gaze without hesitation. The statement hung in the air, challenging years of gang protocol and expected behavior. His words seemed to ripple through the assembled group, causing subtle shifts in stance and expression.
Raxa chose this moment to step forward, his next words falling like thunder in the tense atmosphere. "He'll join our gang Pandion." The declaration caused visible reactions among the assembled group - some lowered their weapons slightly in shock, while others gripped them tighter. The sound of safety catches clicking echoed in the stunned silence that followed.
"What!?" Hime's incredulous response echoed off the compound walls, giving voice to the collective disbelief of everyone present. Her usual composure cracked slightly, revealing genuine surprise beneath her controlled exterior.
Larry nodded firmly, standing his ground. "That's right! He's one of us from now on." Each word carried weight, leaving no room for debate despite the absurdity of the situation. The conviction in his voice seemed to physically push against the wall of skepticism surrounding them.
"This is idiotic," Hime's disapproval cut through the air, her voice carrying years of experience with gang politics and the dangers of misplaced trust. Her fingers tapped against her leg, a rare sign of agitation.
"I know," Larry acknowledged simply, surprising those who expected him to defend the decision more vigorously. His simple acceptance seemed to carry more weight than any argument could have.
Despite her clear reservations, Hime recognized the futility of prolonging the standoff. She signaled the family members to lower their weapons, her authority evident in how quickly they complied. Still, their training showed in how they maintained ready positions, prepared for any sudden movements. The tension in the air remained thick enough to cut with a knife.
Zilant, keenly aware of the hostility surrounding him, spoke up in a measured tone. His voice carried neither fear nor aggression as he said, "It seems I'm not welcomed here. You guys don't have to be the black sheep for me. I guess I'll leave, but I promise never to get involved with anything related to your gang Pandion." His words carried a genuine note of resignation, tinged with something that might have been respect.
"What are you saying, idiot?" Larry's forceful interjection surprised everyone, causing a ripple of movement through the watching crowd. "You're to join us no matter what!" His conviction seemed to grow stronger in the face of Zilant's hesitation, his voice carrying an authority that belied his position.
"But-" Zilant began, only to be cut off by Raxa's authoritative voice, which rang across the courtyard with the finality of a judge's gavel.
"I'm the gang leader, and if I said you'll join, you'll surely join." Raxa's words carried the full weight of his position, brooking no argument. The statement seemed to settle into the stones of the compound itself, marking a moment of irreversible change.
The tension in Zilant's shoulders eased slightly, though his expression remained cautious. "It feels like you guys are forcing me regardless. I'm with you guys as you've spared me alive." The admission carried a note of wry humor beneath its surface.
"That's more like it!" Larry's approval was immediate and genuine, lightening the atmosphere marginally. The words seemed to break some invisible barrier, allowing the watching family members to begin relaxing their stances.
The three made their way inside, their footsteps echoing through the now-quiet courtyard as they headed toward Larry's room. However, another challenge loomed - the crucial matter of registering their gang Pandion in the Gangstar guild.
"We leave it up to you!" Raxa's casual delegation to Hime was met with visible gloom as she departed unwillingly, her footsteps notably heavier than usual.
Once inside the relative privacy of Larry's room, curiosity finally overcame caution. "What exactly happened?" Larry asked, turning to face Zilant directly.
"Happened what?" Zilant responded, settling into his new surroundings with careful movements.
"I mean why did your snake suddenly stopped attacking the scientist?" The question had clearly been weighing on Larry's mind.
Raxa leaned forward in his seat, equally interested in understanding the unusual event they had witnessed.
"It's because the scientist became unconscious," Zilant explained, his voice taking on a more professional tone.
"What's that got to do with your snake attacking?" Larry pressed, sensing there was more to the explanation.
"The thing is, snake rely on scent and body temperature to locate their target and my snake is also the same," Zilant elaborated, revealing unexpected knowledge. "When the scientist became unconscious, my snake lost his scent and moreover he also couldn't find him due to low body temperature that occurs when one is unconscious."
"That's a very scientific reasoning," Raxa commented, genuine impression evident in his voice.
"I know right!" Zilant agreed, a brief moment of shared understanding passing between them.
Larry stood up, stretching slightly. "Alright you guys can go rest."
Raxa rose as well, motioning to Zilant. "Follow me, I'll show you your room."
After their footsteps faded down the hallway, Larry spoke to the seemingly empty room. "You can come out now, Hime."
"How did you know it was me?" she emerged from behind a heavy curtain, her surprise evident.
"The perfume on your body, it's too pungent," Larry explained simply.
Inwardly, Hime thought, "Ah that's why!" while maintaining her composed exterior.
"Can't go alone then," Larry mused, considering the implications of the guild registration. "Very well, let's go together."
"I'm not going weakass," Hime retorted, her usual sharp tongue returning. "I got work to do, you'll be going alone."
"I figured," Larry accepted without argument, gathering the necessary registration details before heading to the Gangstar guild.
The guild's atmosphere shifted noticeably when Larry stepped out of his assigned car, the vehicle's polished surface reflecting the curious and suspicious glances of those gathered outside. Whispers followed him through the crowd - elaborate rumors about Pandion's merciless nature and unmatched strength in the city, with Larry himself supposedly leading this fearsome organization. The contrast between these tales and his actual appearance drew skeptical glances from every corner.
Two heavily tattooed individuals broke from the crowd, their confidence boosted by numbers and territory. One called out with clear challenge in his voice, "You don't look so tough despite the rumors. Let's have a fight."
"In your dreams," Larry replied simply, continuing his steady pace toward the entrance. His response angered them visibly, and they moved to strike, but a single deathly glare from Larry stopped them mid-motion. The other guild members quickly created space around them, their survival instincts recognizing genuine danger.
The reception area offered a stark contrast to the tension outside. A female staff member greeted him with professional courtesy, directing him to the VIP lounge for the paperwork. The registration process proceeded smoothly in the luxurious surroundings, and soon Pandion was officially recognized as a new gang in the city.
The receptionist offered her congratulations with practiced ease, which Larry acknowledged with a simple thanks before departing - notably choosing not to meet the Gangstar guild master despite being in the VIP lounge.
The day's events marked a significant shift in the city's power dynamics. With Zilant's unexpected addition to their ranks and their official recognition by the Gangstar guild, Pandion was positioning itself as a force to be reckoned with.
