SSS-Rank Engineer: Only I Can Create Legendary Weapons

Chapter 48: 48—Fighting the Spirit

The salt shield couldn't last for long. If Percy had time to shape it into a more magical repellent pattern maybe it would. But for now he was relying on the innate property of salt purifying and blocking magic.

He looked around the attic and turned down to little Joey in his hands.

"I'm gonna do something a bit scary. I hope it won't be too much for you?"

"I'm not scared of anything!" Joey replied. "Let's do this!"

He appreciated the kid's courage, he expected nonetheless from a literal ankle biter. The salt was deforming so he decided to be quick, summoning a Spellbolt and pointing it at the floor beneath him.

He pulled the trigger and released a disabling shot. It was one of his favorite applications, a shot type that attacked the entire body to damage an enemy enough that they couldn't fight again.

The hardwood vibrated violently as the blue glow of mana spread across the floor. Then the ground exploded and he fell downstairs into one of the bedrooms. He shot again and fell into the living room

For a moment he enjoyed the weightlessness, but he wasn't done yet. Immediately he touched down, the spirit would attack.

So his voice turned ephemeral and quiet as he cast [Tailwind], he was already connected with the spirits, and he shaped his spirit energy for the spell since he entered the house. So he chanted.

"Drive of the world, swift and free, Rush the gale, surge through me!"

The wind surged around him, creating a funnel that would push him ahead and make him faster. He channeled his fighting spirit into his legs and shouted.

"Hold on tight Joey!"

"This is so AWESOME!"

Looks like Joey is alright. He kicked off the ground and carried both of them flying towards the door in a single leap.

The house surged around him, chairs, tables, and even a pot came flying at him with blistering speed.

But he chose to cast [Tailwind] for that exact reason. It would make everything coming at him slower and him way faster.

He ducked as a table soared over his head, jumped to avoid the carpet that just came alive and the chair coming from behind.

He could see the spirits in the real world with his spirit sense, so he watched them pick all the furniture up and throw it at him. And because of [Tailwind] they couldn't easily approach him.

They were pushed away by the magical winds as he pushed forward, bouncing off walls and furniture like an acrobat.

As dangerous as this was, Percy couldn't help but admit it was fun. He jumped toward a window to try and break through, but the walls stretched the window away from him.

A dozen pale hands leapt from the walls and tried to grab him, but he turned midair to reverse the direction of the [Tailwind] around him.

The effect was instantaneous, he slowed down midair and kicked off the ground to escape the hands reaching for him.

He decided to pull out his Spellbolt and start making things easier. He spun in the air and rapid-fired three shots before landing to clear out some spirits.

Then he ran back towards the kitchen as the house began to distort itself, firing the occasional disable shot at the ground to stop spirits from coming out from the floor and grabbing his feet.

The fight slowly devolved into the world's freakiest game of tag. With Percy carrying Joey in his hands and running from like a hundred spirits at once.

Hands shot out of the most random spots, the ground moved to try and make him slip, picture frames, pots and knives all flew from their cupboards right at him.

And Percy was there weaving through each and every one of them, firing shots from his Spellbolt till it ran out and switching to another one in his storage.

Occasionally he would create an infused salt barrier with salt in his storage then take a moment to breathe. But the spirits were ruthless, no matter how many he shot down, more appeared.

"This is getting a bit annoying," he said to himself. "I hope Dad and George are almost done at least."

"My dad is doing something outside?!" Joey asked excitedly.

"Yeah, we're going to get rid of this spirit."

"My dad's gonna do it, right?" Joey asked. "He's the greatest!"

"Huh, no love for me?" Percy said playfully. "I came up with the plans, and I came in here to save you. Your sister was crying so much, can you believe it?"

"Flynn? She hates me, everyone always tells me to go away," Joey tried to keep a tough look on his face. "Thank you for saving me. And you're really cool too."

He sighed, it was strange how such childish problems could be sad. The kid was annoying, his siblings were justified for telling him to leave sometimes. But you can't help but worry about a kid.

"Let me show you something really cool," he said with an excited smirk.

His voice changed again as he began chanting. This time his voice was harsh and fast, like a thousand people chastising the world.

"Crucible of destiny, painful and with dread. Unleash your wrath, destroy my enemy."

Flames bloomed in his hand. This whole time he had been preparing a huge amount of spirit energy to cast [Fireshot]. So much that shaping it with intent was not easy at all.

The flames grew as he pushed more and more mana into the spell and to the spirits. The simple spell that was supposed to just be a short blast of flames turned into a cannon bolt.

With a flick of his hand the flames were sent flying towards the kitchen wall. There was a vicious bang and the wall of spirits as the wall was blown to pieces.

Percy shot out of the hole in one powerful leap, breaking through the smoke to find Thalos and George standing over a small body in the dirt.

George was shielding them from all the spirits trying to attack. While Thalos stood over the small body, hand on his sword, eyes closed.

The spirit was fighting them out here too. No wonder It felt like it got a bit easier to fight back at some point.

He fired a disabling shot at the ground and landed with a wide smile.

"It's over."
