Chapter 21: 21—We only fight our hardest battles against children
Things weren't looking so good for Percy, Sirena, and Terra. These men were really trying their hardest to kill a couple of kids and an old lady.
Once the strange metallic rod disabled all magical powers, all that were left in their hands were magical tools that could not be disrupted, it seemed. And Sirena didn't seem to have much.
Her flying knife whizzed through the air and disrupted their enemies for a while, but there were too many of them. Sirena was forced to back up closer to the rows of shops.
The assassins, on the other hand, came with a lot of magical and non-magical tools in the event that they had to use the Spirit Disruption rod.
Most of them pulled out their blowdarts once again, while two people pulled out wand-like sticks. Ivory wands inscribe with flowing
Percy saw the blowdarts come out and was already worried.
"I have something that can shield us."
Behind them was a row of abandoned shops. He was going to pretend to snatch a straw mat from behind one of the stalls, but he was actually going to create one with his customizable Rank One reward.
Sirena shook her head to his request.
"I can shield us."
The assassins' blowdarts hissed as they sent tiny darts all towards Sirena. The two assassins with wands sent two fireballs roaring from the tips of the wands at them.
Sirena clutched a sapphire necklace on her neck tightly, eyes focused deeply on what was in front of her. All the darts stopped midair in front of her, struggling against a distortion of air in front of her.
The fireballs clashed against her invisible shield, making Sirena groan. But she repelled the flames. The older woman released her necklace even though they were still surrounded by dispersing flames, and stretched her hand out in front of her.
Outside the circle of lames, the assassins rushed towards Sirena with their green daggers. There were only thirty seconds left till the effects of the Spirit Disruption rod faded, and she regained her ability to cast spells.
They needed to get close and at least nick her with their Widowmaker daggers. Then they could all activate the escape mechanisms in their red helmets and teleport away.
They were out of darts, and only five of them were still alive from the ten that came. The old hag was too powerful to fight any longer.
Inside the circle of flames, Percy realized why Sirena had let go of her necklace. She must have sensed that the assassins would attack before the fire dissipated.
He only had a few moments to think, but his brain raced faster than the flames could dissipate.
In seconds they would surrounded by poisoned daggers, and Percy had no idea how long it would take for Sirena to regain her spellcasting.
What he needed now was to buy time and slow down the assassins. In his mind, a detailed map of the market square spread; he could remember almost every detail and turn.
Next thing on his mind was the application of his customizable reward. A Rank One reward could create an object of at least one kg mass. He could create any one kg item that he had made before or knew how to make.
It was a sizable amount that he could use to create a fully loaded Glock 19 from memory and start spraying, but he doubted he would hit so many fast-moving targets.
So he would use that one kg mass to create something else. Steel was too dense, straw was light and he could make a lot of it. But gas was even lighter.
He roared just before the flames dissipated.
"Hold your breaths!"
The assassins couldn'r hear him over the flames, but Sirena and Terra heard. Terra immediately obeyed out of habit, and Sirena did the same because she feared the assassins had poisonous gas.
Not knowing it was Percy that was about to release it… there's a fart joke somewhere in there, but this isn't the time.
He used eight hundred and fifty-five grams of his customizable reward to create a cloud of chloroform that expanded through the air in seconds.
Chloroform was a chemical used in anesthetics. Percy dated an anesthesiologist once; she had a thing for knocking people out with gas that he wasn't very keen on.
The gas spread through the air faster because of the residual flames surrounding them. The assassins got a whiff of it and instantly turned around. The gas passed through the gaps in their helmets.
They had no idea what Percy had just released but wanted no part in it. Sirena controlled her flying knife to zip between their legs and cut tendons.
Three people fell to the ground, gasping and eyes losing focus as the gas put them to sleep. The last two—the assassin leader and the female assassin with an ice spell—glanced at each other, then activated the emergency escape.
All five assassins disappeared in a flash, leaving behind only red sparks.
Percy pulled Sirena and Terra out of the radius of the chloroform and then they all took in deep breaths, feeling a bit drowsy.
Percy waved at them.
"We should leave the market for a while."
The fortress guards ran into the marketplace to finally defend their Viscount's son. Percy and the others jogged towards the guards, who searched for enemies but only found cracked stones, craters, and patches of blood.
Sirena gave them a scathing look.
"You're already too late. Quickly now, surround the young master and find us a carriage to return to the fortress."
Percy had no idea where his parents were, but he could already hear Hecate never agreeing to let him out of the fortress for the next ten years.
He honestly didn't think the assassination attempt was that bad, but other people seemed to take these types of things seriously.
All he cared about, though, was getting back to the Tower of Hermetics tomorrow and continuing his lessons on circle magic.
