Chapter 116: 116—Choose your side
Soon the affinity revelation ceremony was done and all the children with affinities lined up again. Noah could see some kids leaving early as they had no affinities.
He sighed and looked ahead of him. There were a couple people ahead of him, no calling out names and he wasn't in a rush to show off. Instead he looked for Flynn.
Once he found her in the line he left his spot and began walking backwards. Every one of the children watched him, even the adults seated in the rows of seats were watching him.
He stopped in front of Flynn and waved at the guy behind her.
"Hey can we switch places?" he asked in his nicest voice.
The commonborn boy pointed at himself then turned back in case there was someone else Percy was talking to. Then he nodded nervously.
"Okay just walk up front to that boy wearing the gaudy white and blue shirt and tell him I'm giving my spot to you."
The boy looked too nervous to do that, but he was also worried about offending Perseus Amphene, no matter how nice he was being.
He walked to the front and tapped the gaudy boy's shoulder, telling the boy what Percy had told him. They both turned to him and saw him waving them.
Once the boy had taken his spot Percy stood outside the line and turned to Flynn.
"So how are you feeling, sport?"
Flynn had been glaring at him this whole time, face red with embarrassment and anger, amber eyes livid.
"Are you crazy?" she whispered, leaning into his ear and punctuating each word. "Everyone is looking at us."
"You're not making it better."
Her eyes widened and she shrunk away, suddenly finding the wall very interesting.
"Why are you here?"
"To ask how you're feeling," Percy said simply. "You were avoiding me earlier, so I thought the whole spectacle was making you feel down. Don't think about meaningless things like this. Potential isn't the final score of the game. In the end it comes down to who gets shit done."
She stared away from him, but he caught her shoulder and relaxed. He patted her on the back and sighed.
"But your earth affinity," she said, facing him so she could whisper, "was it caused by the scorpion?"
He simply nodded; this wasn't the best place to talk about such a thing. So he changed the subject.
"Did you get any good spells from the discussion time?"
Flynn smirked, turning her head side to side. "Well my turn was close to the last, so everyone already found who they wanted to gift. And they were so little big families in the back—"
"Ouuuu, you got something really good," Percy said with a grin.
Flynn nodded, clenching her fists excitedly. "After the ceremony there'll be a showcase for the young talent. I'll show you it there."
Percy's smile dropped a bit; he would be gone as soon as the ceremony ended, rushing back to Dema. But he kept that to himself, he didn't want to spoil Flynn's mood.
"Nice."
The line began moving, each person would place their hands on the pillar and whisper the spell they were imprinting. The pillar would glow a bit brighter afterwards and the person's body would mimic the light.
Flynn and Percy talked the entire way up the line.
"Is Lord Vanitas cool? Was he nice to you?" Flynn asked, voice lowering conspiratorially.
"Oh yeah, he was really interesting," Percy said, face lighting up with surprise. "He knew some things about Hermetics and was even interested in Arete. He talked to Thalos a lot."
"That's good. He's so handsome, nice handsome people are so cool," Flynn gushed. "Young people are more into Arete than the older generation. Vanitas is probably so good at it."
Percy smirked, leaning down. "I'm glad Vanitas is nice or your crush might have been affected."
Flynn punched his shoulder. "I don't have a crush, don't tell him that nonsense. And I would have totally stuck with you even if he was an asshole."
"Really," Percy asked sarcastically.
"Of course," Flynn said with her own teasing smile. "There is a small chance I switch sides, but it's this small." She made a pinching motion. "Okay maybe the chances are a bit higher."
They both followed the line slowly, laughing the entire way. He didn't bother getting behind her because the kid already knew that he was there.
But when his turn came, Flynn suddenly wanted him to go first. "Ah it's better if they are all watching you leave the stage."
Percy got on the stage sighing. He confidently strode to the pillar and touched it. The three lights of his affinities lit up the room.
He slowly chanted the three spells under his breath. He didn't need to know how to shape them yet so he just chanted.
He closed his eyes as the light enveloped him, feeling the uncomfortable sensation of something being drawn on his spirit.
This just made him more interested in how this worked. But he put it aside and left the stage, waiting on the other side for Flynn.
Since he was on the right side of the hall, Percy could see Sion Eurides looking right at him. There wasn't any kind of look on his face, but an even smile.
Sion didn't look evil in the way he had been expecting. His narrow handsome face and full brown hair actually looked normal. But there was something about his face.
Whether it was the dark circles under his eyes or the pale nature of his skin. It was like the man was sick and healthy at the same time.
They both locked eyes for a long time; all the nobles in the section hurriedly looked away. Once Percy was done looking at Sion, he turned to the rest of them, singling out the ones from Demetria with his eyes.
There would be hell to pay. That was all his eyes told them.
