Chapter 8: The Great Borgir
The trio watched as Lukas brought them their plates. All he had made, was a simple burger.
He watched as the chef began to operate on the burger, taking out all the layers and cutting into the patty. Lukas silently judged him and said nothing. The baron and his grand daughter watched the man do his thing instead of eating.
'I think I'm starting to have a prejudice against nobles….'
Once the man was done, he looked up at Lukas, "Is this a beef sandwich?"
'This…. right. I can't just used the names from earth. Burger originates from Hamburg which is in Germany and there's no place called Hamburg here. Calling it a beef sandwich feels like a violation though…. right, there are times when you should just shut off your brain and just stop thinking.'
"Technically yes, but I prefer calling it Borgir. That's the name of the man who taught me this."
The man nodded and looked at the other two before going back to Lukas, "It's too big. How do you expect us to eat this?"
Lukas stared at him, the corners of his lips twitching slightly as he felt his aggressive side awakening.
'Open your mouth and put it in, asshole! For fucks sake! Nah Lukas, calm down. They're high class people and they probably like acting pretentious. Imagine this is an interview.'
He took a deep breath and exhaled, "Well, this dish represents our wild side and history. Our ancestors were hunters and gatherers, roaming freely on the lands as they took down one prey after another. To eat this, one must embrace their suppressed instincts that they have buried deep inside them. It is to be aware that such a version of us exists."
The baron and his grand daughter seemed absolutely lost while he chef nodded seriously.
"That's an interesting perspective. I didn't think that a dish could represent something so… complex."
Lukas gave him a warm smile.
'I literally just blabbered random stuff that came to my head….' he thought as he took a step back.
"Please, enjoy your meal. And I hope that you don't use the cutlery."
His gaze locked onto the baron who had picked up his fork and knife.
Once he heard this, he casually put them back down as he acted like nothing had happened.
The first one to go wild, was the chef. He acted purely on instincts as he took a large bite.
"Mmmm!" he made a noise as he nodded and the other two followed his actions. The baron was hesitant with the first bite but after he got a taste of it, he had no reservations. Etiquette went out the window as the meat juices dripped onto his plate.
The girl on the other hand, showed no hesitation as she opened her small mouth as much as she could and took a big bite. She tasted various ingredients; the bun, juicy meat, tomatoes, fresh cheese and onions mixed with a little bit of citrus and a creamy sauce that she couldn't recognise.
She had never tasted so many different flavours at the same time and she had also never eaten something in such an ungraceful way. Yet, she couldn't help but continue.
While the trio dug into their food, Lukas watched as he contemplated the differences he had noticed. The main one, was the lack of electronic tools. Without blenders, some key sauces would become extremely hard to make. This included mayonnaise which he planned on making, only to realise that there was no blender.
'Luckily… I didn't need too much so I could manage it with a whisk.' he thought as he let out a soft sigh.
Apart from the mayo, there was also a problem with names. One was burgers and the other, was the names of cheese. The people in this world did not know about mozzarella or cheddar even though they knew how to make them.
Mozarella was called fresh milk cheese and the cheddar was called aged milk cheese but there was a lot of problems with this. While mozarella could be called fresh milk cheese, there were others that could fall into the same category and these could be cheeses like provolon and scamorza.
Aged milk cheeses had the same problem. By giving it a broad name, it gave birth to different kinds of cheeses that ended up being called the same thing.
'Luckily the cheese I got wasn't too bad and went okay with the burger. Finding the right cheese is going to be such a pain in the future.'
While he was lost in his own thoughts, the trio had managed to finish their burgers.
"Lukas." the baron said as he wiped his hands with a cloth, "The Borgir was amazing. I understand what you meant when you said that it represents our wild side."
'Oh, do you?' Lukas asked inwardly as he nodded with a smile.
The chef turned towards the girl instead of Lukas and stood up from his chair, "You should hire this kid instead of me. I have found immense inspiration, so I'll be heading back to the capital."
Then, he looked at Lukas, "Thank you for teaching me that philosophy can be taught through food. You've opened my eyes."
'Bro I just said some random stuff… and I don't even remember what I said.'
Lukas felt a little guilty as he watched the man leave. His gaze then locked onto the girl.
Her decision was the one that would matter the most after all.
"How much would you like as your weekly pay?"
Lukas was momentarily stunned as he did not expect her to go straight to the point. He was about to give her a number when he changed his mind.
He shook his head and gave her a serious look, "Before that, I would like to know the real reason for choosing a restaurant. There are so many other businesses that you can try, so why this?"
"…. My grandma owned a small restaurant. My grandpa was a nobody back then, barely able to survive on a weekly wage. She used to give him free meals and slowly, the two of them fell in love. She passed away two years ago. I'm doing this for her."
Lukas nodded, his expression softening as he asked, "Then do you think your grandmother would only serve the rich and ignore the poor? Please think about this with a clear mind and then we can talk about the payment."
"It was a pleasure meeting you, Baron Frascine. I'll take my leave."
Just as he turned around, he heard the Baron's voice.
"Lukas, wait."
