Chapter 15: The Experiments Begin
Opening of the restaurant was postponed as Lukas decided to do some more on-field market research. For five days, he consistently grew potatoes, tomatoes, onions, chillies and garlic in his divine farm, stockpiling F rank ingredients like there was no tomorrow.
During this time, all he did was taste various dishes from 4 different restaurants all over the town. The last one was found thanks to Robinson and according to him, there were only four restaurants in the town.
As days passed, Lukas learnt more and more about the locals as he made changes to his dishes.
Lukas woke up extremely early in the morning on a fine Thursday. He turned to look at his sister who was already awake and silently meditating.
'If my divine farm wasn't directly connected to my mana heart, I would also probably be doing some mana breathing for a few hours.' he thought as he stretched, replanted all his crops and got ready for the new day.
"You don't have to wake up so early, Nina. It's basically still night time." he said as he walked out of the bathroom to see her sitting at their dining table.
She looked at him and stood up before walking towards the bathroom. She had a stubborn look in her eyes as she spoke, "I want to come."
"Sure, I'm not stopping you. Make it quick though."
Nina gave him a sideways glance as she said, "I'm not slow like you."
The corners of Lukas' lips twitched the door closed behind her. With a sigh, he headed over to the bedroom and put on a fresh set of clothes before he closed his eyes and began to practice his mana breathing.
Soon, he lost his sense of time and only stopped when he was woken up by his sister.
"Right." he said as he looked at Nina who was wearing a plain blue gown and a nice brown apron. Around her shoulders, was a thick shawl that covered her neck and kept her warm.
Lukas left his house along with his sister and headed over to the Baker's Cross. Once he was there, he walked into a small shop which was originally a bakery that sold various breads, cakes and pastries.
Now, it was under the Baron's ownership while the baker was employed to work with Lukas. The first thing he did, was take out all the products except the cheapest bread since that was the only thing that was going to be sold.
As he walked in with Nina, he saw a middle aged man taking out three foot long loafs from the oven before tossing them onto a large table to cool down.
"Good morning Mr Johmir, how're the breads coming along?"
Johmir glared at Lukas, "Do I really have to wake up this early? Every single day?!!" he yelled as he waved his huge tongs, making Lukas take a step back.
"I never told you to come this early…. " Lukas said awkwardly as he looked at the huge pile of bread placed in a large wooden box.
Johmir paused for a moment and then frowned, "But the baron's butler said…."
"Yeah that man knows nothing. You can come here at this time and start, there's no need to come earlier than this." he said as he began to count the loafs, "Do you have a watch?"
Johmir nodded and put his hand into his apron pocket before producing a simple pocket watch that was bronze in colour, "It's almost four in the morning."
"Mhm, we'll start at four every day and you'll be free to leave at eight." he said as he counted the rows and columns before nodding.
'The town has a population of approximately a thousand so I think bringing I'll have around four hundred customers. I can't expect a full attendance on the first day but it's not good to underestimate ourselves either.' he thought and said, "A hundred loaves already…. hmm, yeah this much is enough."
After letting the baker leave, Lukas turned to look at his sister, "Let's start?"
She nodded as she grabbed a sack made of jute fibres and dragged it to one of the walls opposite to the place where all the bread was placed. Lukas did the same as he grabbed a sack of potatoes and rested them against the wall before he put a large steel pot on a huge fireplace.
The fire was huge, heating up the pot extremely quickly while Lukas slowly began to pour water into it.
All the peels and waste was tossed into a large bucket. Lukas quickly finished peeling the potatoes, so he tossed them all into the boiling water. Then, he got to worn on the onions. Thanks to his experience on earth, he could close his eyes and cut them efficiently but he didn't. Instead, he kept them open and cut the onions like a normal person.
Thanks to the knife being extremely sharp and Lukas' proper chopping technique, far fewer fumes were released into the air. This was also why he didn't let his sister cut the onions—if they were bruised, more gas would be released and this would sting everyone's eyes.
Preparing the ingredients alone took an hour. Already feeling tired and bored, Lukas got to his feet and picked up a barrel of oil before pouring a generous amount into an empty pot on the flame.
Soon, he tossed in some onions and then some commonly used spices like cloves, cardamom, dry bay leaves, star anise and a spice that he wasn't familiar with but had come to love, babiro. It was a bark of a specific tree, similar to a cardamom but it's uniqueness was that it produced umami flavour into the dishes it was used in.
Lukas waited until the onions were translucent and then tossed in a generous amount of crushed garlic, chillies and then, he added in all the tomatoes that Nina had cut.
Once all the ingredients were tossed in, he grabbed a few handfuls of salt and sprinkled it in before covering the large pot with a lid.
"Let's go take a short walk. We'll come back in ten minutes." he said as he walked towards the door.
