Chapter 142: I Feel Like I'm Sitting On Top Of The World
Before he could process it further, Maria's voice cut in, flat and casual as she scrolled through her phone.
"Oh yeah." She said, tilting the screen slightly. "I heard you came to class with one of the Battle Angels daughters today."
Her tone wasn't accusing, just faintly amused, as if she were observing a piece of gossip she already knew would be good.
"The school forum is absolutely popping off right now. Hate threads, rage threads, comments blowing up by the second...every single one of them foaming at the mouth about how you're corrupting the holy daughter, and all of them begging the administration to kick you out. It's getting so many likes it's actually trending."
Mika let out a long sigh, running a hand down his face.
"Life is full of bastards." He muttered under his breath, sounding more tired than upset. "Do I really have nothing better to do than deal with this shit?"
Then he turned his head toward her, propping his chin lazily on his palm.
"It's not even a big deal. I'm just staying over at the Blade Maiden's place. So, obviously, I came to class with Charlotte because we left together. That's all."
Maria's eyes stayed on her phone, her fingers tapping idly against the case.
"Mm." Then, almost idly, she added, "Seems like you kissed her too." Her tone was deceptively casual, but there was a faint edge of curiosity there.
Mika didn't even flinch. Instead, a faint grin spread across his face.
"Oh, that? Yeah. Charlotte's always so sneaky. She just took her chance and stole a kiss."
Maria finally glanced up at him, her expression unreadable, her gaze sharp and dry. "You don't sound too bothered by it."
"Of course not." His grin widened, boyish and shameless. "Who wouldn't be happy getting kissed by a pretty girl like her?" He laughed softly, rubbing the back of his neck. "Honestly, I couldn't even help it, just thinking about it makes my lips curl into a smile again. It felt nice."
Maria's stare didn't waver, and Mika's grin faltered for a moment under her silence. He smirked, trying to break the tension.
"What? Are you actually jealous or something?"
She didn't answer right away, simply turned her attention back to her phone, her face giving nothing away.
"Nothing like that." She said eventually, her voice calm and dismissive. Her thumb flicked to scroll down the forum feed. "I'm just surprised. You usually go out of your way to avoid the daughters of the Battle Angels."
"I've literally seen you fake coughing fits or claim you were about to collapse just to get out of dealing with them. I've even played decoy for you more than once so you could escape."
"And now suddenly you're walking in with one of them like it's nothing? Normally, if this happened, you'd be sulking and cranky all morning. But here you are, grinning like an idiot."
Mika blinked, then chuckled under his breath.
"Fair point." He straightened up, his grin softening into something a little more genuine. "Yeah, I've decided to change things up."
Maria raised an eyebrow without looking up from the screen. "Change things up?"
"Yeah." Mika nodded, leaning back against his chair, his voice calm but sincere. "I'm done being aloof. I'm done pushing them away like I've been doing all this time. I've decided to let them in properly now, like they deserve."
"...Not as strangers I keep at arm's length, but as family."
Maria tilted her head just slightly, one brow arched, her attention flicking from her phone back to him with a quiet kind of scrutiny.
"And what exactly made that change?" She asked, tone soft but probing. "From what I know, your main goal in the past was to keep as much distance as possible. That was your whole thing."
"I don't know." He said, his voice carrying an edge of flippant dismissal, but the words that followed were anything but casual. "I guess...dying once made me look at things I regret a lot."
That made Maria's eyes sharpen. She blinked, studying him carefully, waiting for him to elaborate. But instead, with a sudden burst of energy he started speaking in a haughty manner.
"Anyway..." He said, stretching back into his chair as if nothing had happened. "...because of this, some changes might happen in my life. Which means I probably won't be able to spend as much time with you here at school."
He flicked his gaze toward her, teasing.
"Now that I'm planning to open up to the others, I might spend more time with them instead. So, you'll just have to get used to not seeing me around as much."
The smirk lingered, but then he sighed, shoulders slumping a little, tone slipping into a lazy exasperation.
"But it's not like it matters anyway. Even if I don't talk to you as much, you wouldn't mind. You probably wouldn't even notice."
He leaned back further into his chair, arms crossed, muttering as though he were half-convinced of his own words.
"It's useless to even try and tease you using this."
But to his surprise Maria didn't agree and instead she finally put her phone face down on the desk, looking up at him with narrowed eyes.
"Who says I won't be bothered?" She asked, her voice low and even but carrying more weight than usual. "I most definitely will be bothered."
Mika froze for a second. His grin faltered, then brightened again, this time with something more genuine, almost hopeful. For a heartbeat, he thought she was about to admit something softer, maybe even say she was glad to have him around, glad to call him a friend.
But instead, Maria's lips curved into a sly smile, her voice sliding back into its usual dry amusement.
"You know..." She said. "..the rest of the world, at least 99.99 % of it, would consider even being on speaking terms with one of the daughters of the Battle Angels a sacred thing. They'd treat it like a blessing, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity...And then there's you."
"The guy who not only has the attention of one daughter, but five of them. And not just them, the actual Battle Angels themselves. Yet you've spent all this time pushing them away, keeping them at arm's length."
Her tone softened with a faint, mocking laugh.
"It's ridiculous when you think about it. You're sitting in a position most of the world would fight and bleed for, and you act like it's an inconvenience. Just imagining how envious people would be of your seat is already amusing enough."
Mika tilted his head, watching her quietly, his grin curving back with a trace of sheepishness.
"But then I realized something else..." Maria went on, her smile sharpening. "...that same person, the one with this untouchable seat, the one who pushed away angels and their daughters, the one who saved the world, actually prefers spending time with me...Talking to me."
"And realising this, even if it was for completely different reasons, it made me feel like I was at the very top. Like I had something even the greatest figures of the world couldn't have. Like I was sitting on a throne built out of everyone else's wishes."
Hearing this, Mika stared at her, wide-eyed for a beat, then let out a low whistle.
"Wow." He said dryly, lips quirking into a crooked grin. "That's...quite a horrible thought to have."
Maria didn't even try to deny it.
"Oh, it is. Most certainly." She leaned her chin into her hand, smirk never faltering. "But it's true, so I'm not going to deny it. The pity is, now that you're planning to open up, I'll be dethroned. Tragic, isn't it?"
"Sure tragic...for me since I've come to know that my friend is using me as a trophy after all."
Mika echoed with a chuckle, shaking his head to which she too smiled before her eyes lingered on him for a moment, gaze thoughtful. A curious edge bled into her voice as she thenasked,
"But I am curious, though."
That got his attention. "Curious?"
Maria tilted her head, studying him carefully.
"Most people out there, well, basically everyone, don't actually know what your relationship with the Battle Angels or their daughters is. The whole world is speculating, but nothing has ever been confirmed."
"Even the Royal family, the Noble families, the Federation, they don't have a clear idea. All they know is that you're close. You're an anomaly. Someone too ordinary to fit, yet far too close to ignore."
She leaned back in her chair, her smirk tugging at the corner of her lips again.
"But me? I know. I know the truth. I know how you grew up with them, how they were your childhood friends, how the Battle Angels themselves raised you...You already told me. So my question is, why me?"
"Why am I the only one who knows all this, when the rest of the world is still in the dark?"
Her words hung there and Mika stared at her for a few seconds, then slowly, a smile pulled across his face—gentle, sincere, carrying none of the haughty bravado from before.
"Why?...It's because I trust you, Maria."
Maria blinked, her brow raising ever so slightly.
"I trust that even if I told you my family's secrets, you wouldn't use them maliciously. You'd keep them to yourself." He said simply, his tone steady. "You and I, we're close enough that I don't want to keep everything hidden from you."
Maria scoffed faintly, though her gaze lingered on him longer than usual. "And what if I did tell someone else?" She asked, her tone carefully measured. "This kind of information is something the noble families would pay fortunes for."
"...You know how bad my financial situation is. Aren't you worried I'd sell it?"
Mika's grin widened into something sharper. "Not at all."
That answer didn't surprise her in the slightest, though she tilted her head. "You really believe that?"
"Yeah." He said easily. "You've got a horrible personality, but you're not a hypocrite. You'd rather die than do something that disgusting. Selling secrets isn't you."
Maria's lips pressed together, her expression unreadable. After a moment, she spoke again, her voice dropping into something darker.
"Then what if I don't sell it, but someone kidnaps me? Tortures me until I break? What if after all that, I end up spilling everything?"
Her tone was dangerous, low, like she was daring him to test his own conviction.
But Mika didn't even hesitate. He leaned back in his chair lazily as if the question itself didn't carry the weight it should.
"If that ever happens, you shouldn't worry about it. Just say whatever you have to. Your safety comes first. Secrets are worthless compared to that."
Maria blinked at him, lips parting slightly in surprise. Then his expression shifted, calm, but darker for a split second.
"Besides..." He added quietly, his eyes flashing with something that made the air heavy. "It doesn't matter if the person who hears those secrets doesn't exist anymore, does it?"
"...So, does it really matter if you end up telling it someone else if you're under investigation?"
Her throat went dry at that. For a moment, the only sound was the faint buzz of her phone. That darkness in his eyes, it unsettled even her, and Maria wasn't easily unsettled.
Finally, she smirked faintly, shaking her head as though dismissing the heaviness. "You say the most insane things sometimes."
Mika grinned, shameless. "Maybe and so do you."
Maria then let out a soft exhale, then glanced down at her phone again. "You know what." She said lightly, almost as if to break the tension. "I'm in a good mood today. Maybe after lunch, I'll give you another one of those smotherings. If you want."
Mika's head snapped toward her, eyes gleaming. "Wait, really? For what reason?"
She didn't look up, only scrolled idly, the smile tugging at her lips obvious even from the angle.
"No reason...None whatsoever."
Mika only laughed, unrestrained, while Maria smirked behind her phone. For all the secrets, and dangers swirling around them, the space between them felt strangely simple and safe. And, for them, that was more enough...
