Chapter 7: RED CLONE

The morning passed quickly for Peter and Rio, and it was fortunate for him that Rio had a small holiday that day.

This was because she had worked hard all week and was planning to take a break that day while a friend of hers would take over her duties so that Rio could return the favor one day.

Peter really felt embarrassed for disturbing Rio on her day off, but she repeatedly pointed out that it was not a problem and that he would really need help with his next step.

He had initially planned to tell Leah that he wanted to adopt her, but he ultimately decided to leave it as a surprise for her once she improved a little.

Only after they had breakfast did Peter and Rio notice that Leah was still very tired, so they put the girl to bed to get some sleep and rest while the two of them took the next step... which was shopping for clothes.

Peter walked hesitantly inside the children's clothing store, holding a small list with some basic necessities written on it.

Beside him stood Rio, scanning the clothes racks with a confident smile, as if she were used to this kind of shopping.

Rio, holding a small pink dress, said, "What about this? It looks cute and suitable for a girl Leah's age."

Peter took the dress from her and examined it carefully. "I think it's nice, but do you think she would prefer this? Maybe the blue one would be better."

Rio laughed lightly. "Oh, Peter, kids at that age don't care as much about colors as they do about comfort. Trust me, Miles was like that. But you'll learn over time."

As time passed, the bag they had brought was filling up with small clothes—dresses, cotton shirts, colorful socks, and even a woolen hat with little bunny ears in white.

Peter, picking up a small gray coat, remembered Leah's old coat and then looked at Rio. "Hey Rio, do you think this coat will keep her warm? I don't want her to feel cold again."

Rio looked at Peter with tenderness, and the thought that Peter seemed to embody the perfect father who loves his children increased. "Peter, thinking of her this way shows how ready you are for this responsibility. Yes, this coat will be perfect, especially on cold nights."

As they moved between the racks, Peter's eyes fell on the toy section. He stopped for a moment and then looked at Rio hesitantly. "I think Leah needs a toy to give her some comfort. Something she can hug."

Rio smiled. "She's a child, Peter. Of course, she'll want that." She pointed to a shelf full of stuffed animals. "That's a great choice. Kids always love stuffed toys."

The cashier, Rio placed the purchases on the counter one by one, while Peter carefully placed the toys into the bag. The cashier, a plump woman with a friendly face, began scanning the prices with a smile.

The cashier looked at both of them. "What a lovely day! You two are such a wonderful couple, buying all of this for your little girl. You're really sweet parents!"

Peter paused for a moment, his face noticeably reddening. He looked at Rio hesitantly, as if waiting for her to correct the misunderstanding, but he found that the woman seemed to believe it, and perhaps even more so.

When he looked at the cashier to correct the mistake about them being married, he caught Rio's eye, and she nodded toward the small sign on the checkout table, which read: "Couples Discount: 15%."

Rio adjusted herself, then spoke with a side smile and a hint of embarrassment as she looked at Peter. "I guess we won't argue about this now, right, dear?"

Peter, showing clear confusion on his face, said, "Oh... yes, definitely."

The cashier, unaware of their embarrassment, happily continued the checkout. "That's wonderful. I always love seeing new families starting their journey. Your total is $957."

After paying the cashier, the two left the store, carrying the bag full of purchases.

Peter walked beside Rio, still feeling a hint of embarrassment on his face. "Do you think we acted unethically?"

Even with the embarrassment Rio felt, she chuckled at Peter's sense of ethics. "It was a very small lie. And think about it, we saved some money that we can use to buy more for Leah."

Peter, with a light smile, replied, "Well, you always seem to find a way to justify things."

Rio put her hand on Peter's shoulder. "And you always find a way to make the world better, Peter. That's why I believe you'll be a great father. Just like being a great hero."

Peter nodded, and the two of them walked a little further until they reached the parking lot, where Rio's car was.

They stopped at the car. Peter opened the back door and carefully placed the bag full of clothes, while Rio held the bag full of toys and looked at it. "Do you think Leah will be happy?"

Peter sighed as he looked at the toy bag. "I hope so. All I want is for her to know that she's safe and loved."

Rio smiled as she handed the toy bag to Peter, who was also smiling as he placed it in the back seat next to the clothing bag. "With you, I think she'll feel that, and more."

The two got in the car and drove off to Rio's house, as neither of them wanted Leah to wake up and find they were gone; the poor girl might get scared if she didn't find them.

In a dark basement, the sounds of scratches and some sobbing could be heard.

The basement door slowly opened, and a man with short brown hair and fair skin appeared. His features were ordinary and unremarkable. He wore a gray shirt, jeans, and white sneakers.

The man slowly walked to one of the small rooms inside the basement, opened the door quietly, and turned on the room's lights, causing the person who had been crying to scream because of the light. "Hello, darling."

The man looked at the person locked inside the room—it was Mary Jane Watson.

A woman with long, faded red hair, lacking vitality, and fair skin. Her features, once an example of beauty, now only held weakness, and her eyes screamed with distress at the man before her.

The man leaned closer to Mary Jane, who looked extremely tired, causing her to spit in his face. "Damn you, Paul."

Paul, angered by Mary Jane spitting on him, slapped her and wiped his face. "You've been making a lot of noise lately. I think you need to take your medicine."

Paul grabbed Mary Jane as she struggled, but she couldn't overcome him. He slapped her again. "Calm down, you bitch."

Mary Jane glared at him. "Trust me, when they find out you're holding me here, no one will save you from their anger."

Paul looked at Mary Jane and laughed mockingly. "Aren't you still hoping, darling? That man gave up on you a long time ago, he never came to save you."

Mary Jane screamed at him angrily, "I know he didn't give up on me. Even if years pass, I'll wait for him. I know him better than myself, he won't give up on me."

Paul laughed maniacally at Mary Jane. "Oh, darling, how stupid you are. Do you think your sponsor doesn't know that? He does, and we've taken all the necessary precautions for him to give up on you."

Mary Jane stammered, her lips bleeding from the slaps. "W... What?"

Paul smiled sarcastically. "Let me introduce you to someone I haven't introduced to you in months, darling... Honey, can you come in?"

Mary Jane began hearing footsteps, and as soon as the person entered the room, she opened her eyes in shock.

The person standing before her was a woman with long red hair and fair skin. Her features were attractive, radiating vitality and elegance. She wore trendy clothes, a brightly colored shirt, and tight jeans.

Paul looked at Mary Jane, who stared at the woman, as the woman looked at Mary Jane with disdain. "Let me introduce you to my wife, Mary Jane Watson."

Mary Jane stayed frozen in place while Paul leaned closer to her, his face now near the original Mary Jane's stunned face. "A long time ago, we broke your lover's heart. You'll rot in this dark basement while your lover suffers heartache. And if your sponsor is lucky, he'll even kill himself because he'll think I'm sleeping with his loyal, faithful lover."

Paul stood up and approached the new Mary Jane, who mocked the original, and grabbed her waist, leaving the room.

Before Paul left with Mary Jane's clone, he turned to her, "Don't blame me. Blame your lover or the man who paid me to do this and who also made a clone of you to torment your brown lover."

When Mary Jane came to her senses, she rushed toward the door that Paul had closed and turned off the lights from the outside, making it dark. She kept hitting the door and crying, screaming, "No, no, no! Peter, I'm not her, I'm your love... Please... Please... I'm not her... I love you."
