Chapter 14: Out of the Shadows
Chapter 15: Out of the Shadows
The air in the coffee shop grew thick with tension as the masked figures slowly approached the table. Peter's heart hammered in his chest as he crouched under the booth with MJ, his mind racing. Whoever these people were, they were definitely connected to Osborn. He could feel it in his bones. And with MJ here, in the middle of it all, Peter had no choice but to act.
He carefully peered out from behind the booth, his eyes scanning the room. The masked men moved with calculated precision, their eyes scanning every corner of the shop. Peter's spider-sense was firing on all cylinders, telling him that danger was imminent. He needed to get MJ out of here—fast.
Without saying a word, Peter grabbed MJ by the arm, pulling her toward the kitchen entrance at the back of the shop. The masked men hadn't noticed them yet, but it wouldn't be long before they did.
"Stay close to me," Peter whispered urgently. MJ nodded, her face pale with fear. She had no idea who these people were, but she knew something was terribly wrong.
They moved quickly, slipping through the kitchen, but the sound of shuffling feet echoed from the front of the shop. The door behind them slammed open, and Peter could hear the masked men's voices grow louder. They were coming for them.
"Don't let them escape," one of the men barked.
Peter's spider-sense went into overdrive. He knew the only way to escape was to get to higher ground. He shot a web to the ceiling and yanked MJ up into the air, swinging them both into the rafters above the kitchen. They landed softly on a beam, hidden from view.
Peter's breath came in quick, shallow gasps as he peered down below. The men were now storming into the kitchen, their footsteps heavy and deliberate. It was clear that they knew exactly what they were looking for.
"Where are they?" one of them demanded, his voice cold and menacing.
Peter held his breath, waiting. He could feel MJ trembling beside him, her grip tight on his arm. He wanted to tell her everything, to explain why they were in danger, but now wasn't the time. Right now, they needed to get out of there.
He reached for his phone, quickly typing a message to Harry. "Need backup. Coffee shop. Masked men. Osborn's goons."
Peter hit send, hoping Harry would pick up on the urgency. They were running out of time.
The men below were beginning to split up, searching every corner of the kitchen. Peter's mind raced as he thought of a way to get them out of here. The roof. It was their only shot.
He shot another web to the rafters, this time aiming for a ventilation shaft. With a quick pull, he and MJ were both airborne again, swinging up into the shaft just as the men below began to shout.
"Nothing here! They must've gone up!" one of them yelled.
Peter pulled MJ through the vent with him, moving as quickly as possible. The shaft was narrow, but it was their best option. They crawled through the dark passage, their breaths coming in short, frantic bursts.
MJ was silent beside him, and Peter could feel her fear. It was palpable. Her hand gripped his, and he squeezed it reassuringly, even though he felt anything but reassured.
"Peter," MJ whispered, her voice trembling. "Who are they? What's going on?"
Peter glanced at her, his heart heavy. He wanted to tell her everything. He wanted to explain about Osborn, about the experiments, about Exo, about how he had failed to protect her time and time again. But right now, there was no time for explanations. There was only time to move.
"I'll explain everything later," he said quietly. "I promise. But right now, I need you to trust me. We're going to get out of here, okay? But we need to stay quiet."
MJ nodded, her face pale but resolute.
They reached the end of the ventilation shaft and peeked through the grate. Peter could see the alley outside, bathed in the pale glow of streetlights. It was their way out.
Peter reached for the grate, his fingers trembling as he silently unlatched it. He slowly pushed it open, careful not to make a sound. Once the grate was removed, he crawled out, pulling MJ behind him.
They were outside, but they weren't out of danger yet. Peter's spider-sense tingled, alerting him to movement in the distance. The masked men were still searching the coffee shop, and if they realized Peter and MJ were gone, they'd be back on their trail in seconds.
"Come on," Peter said, his voice barely above a whisper. "We need to move."
He pulled MJ toward a narrow alley between two buildings, hoping the shadows would be enough to conceal them for now. They couldn't stay in one place for long, not with Osborn's goons on their tail.
Peter's mind was spinning. Whoever these men were, they knew exactly who he was. They knew about his connection to MJ. And they were willing to do anything to get to her.
Peter's phone buzzed in his pocket. He quickly pulled it out, relieved to see that it was a message from Harry.
"On my way. Stay hidden. I'll get you out of there."
Peter's heart lifted slightly, but the relief was short-lived. The masked men were still out there, and he knew they wouldn't stop until they found them. But with Harry's help, maybe they stood a chance.
Peter looked at MJ, her face filled with concern and confusion. "We need to keep moving, MJ. We can't stay here."
She nodded, her eyes wide with fear. "Peter, please… What's happening? Who are these people?"
Peter hesitated, then exhaled slowly. "MJ, I'll explain everything once we're safe. I promise. But right now, I need you to trust me."
MJ squeezed his hand tightly, and Peter could see the weight of the situation settling on her. She didn't fully understand what was happening, but she could feel the gravity of it.
Peter's spider-sense flared again, this time with a sharp warning. Without thinking, he grabbed MJ and yanked her behind a dumpster, just as a figure appeared at the entrance of the alley. It was one of the masked men, scanning the area with cold, calculating eyes.
Peter's heart raced. They couldn't let him see them. Not now.
He pressed a finger to his lips, signaling MJ to stay silent. Slowly, he crouched, his body tensed, ready to move at a moment's notice.
The man took a step forward, his eyes narrowing as he peered into the darkness. Peter held his breath, staying perfectly still, praying that the shadows would conceal them.
The man paused for a moment, then turned and walked away, his footsteps fading into the distance.
Peter let out a slow breath of relief. That had been too close.
"Let's go," Peter whispered, pulling MJ to her feet.
They moved quickly, darting through the alleyways, trying to stay as far off the main roads as possible. They couldn't afford to be seen. Not when Osborn's men were hunting them down.
And all the while, Peter couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, that the web of lies surrounding them was about to tighten.
