Spellbound Empire: Reincarnated in Balance

Chapter 8: Chapter 8

The air in the jungle clearing crackled with tension, a mix of magic and raw bravado swirling like a storm about to break.

"Last chance to walk away," I said, spinning my gun in a lazy circle before holstering it. "No shame in knowing your limits."

Smug Guy smirked, stepping forward. His white hair glinted like moonlight, and his overly confident aura screamed, Main character in his own head. "The only limits here are yours. Let's see if you're all talk, hotshot."

"Oh, I'm not just talk," I said, grinning. "I'm a whole monologue."

Smug Guy lunged first, his hand glowing with some kind of anti-magic field that made the air ripple.

"Anti-magic?" I muttered, dodging sideways. "Great. Just what I needed- an overachiever with hacks."

"Talonis, gadgets!" Nerath shouted, already rushing forward like a human wrecking ball. His body-strengthening magic kicked in, and he met Smug Guy head-on, their clash sending a shockwave through the clearing.

The rest of Smug Guy's team sprang into action. Staff Girl waved her weapon, summoning a whirlwind that sent Talonis flying.

"Really? Wind magic?" I called out, raising my hand. "Copycat."

I countered her whirlwind with one of my own, sending her spinning like a confused top.

Meanwhile, Gauntlet Guy charged at Nerath, swinging fists that glowed with molten energy. Nerath ducked, grabbed a rock, and hurled it at him like a cannonball.

"Nice shot!" I yelled.

"Thanks! Now stop slacking!" Nerath snapped.

Talonis recovered, pulling out a gadget that looked like a mini-turret. "Deploying support!"

The turret spat out pellets of sticky foam, trapping Staff Girl in place. She shrieked, her staff falling uselessly to the ground.

"Sticky foam? Really?" I said.

"It works!" Talonis snapped, wiping sweat from his brow. "Don't knock it!"

Smug Guy turned his attention to me, his hand glowing again. "Think you're clever, don't you?"

"Not clever. Just better," I said, aiming my gun. I fired a poison-laced lightning shot directly at him.

He didn't even flinch. The bullet fizzled out the moment it hit his anti-magic field.

"Poison and lightning?" he said, smirking. "Cute. But I'm immune to poison."

"Oh, come on," I groaned. "Who writes these cheat codes?"

"Focus, Laziel!" Talonis yelled.

"Yeah, yeah," I muttered, holstering the gun. "Time to get creative."

I summoned a gust of wind, kicking up dust and leaves to obscure his vision. Then I dashed forward, weaving through his anti-magic strikes.

"Too slow!" I taunted, ducking under his swipe and landing a solid punch to his gut.

He stumbled, coughing. "You fight dirty."

"Nope. I fight smart."

.

.

.

Nerath and Talonis had already subdued the rest of Smug Guy's team. Staff Girl was still stuck in foam, and Gauntlet Guy was groaning on the ground, his gauntlets sparking uselessly.

Smug Guy knelt, clutching his stomach but glaring up at me. "Fine. You win"

I walked up to the pedestal, the Quantum Core glowing faintly. With a quick gesture, I secured it in our team's containment device.

"Now," Nerath said, looming over Smug Guy, "how about we take their core too?"

I held up a hand, stopping him. "No need."

"What?" Nerath blinked. "They'd have taken ours if they won!"

"Maybe," I said, turning back to Smug Guy with a smirk. "But we're not them. The fight was fun, and you gave us a run for our money. But we don't win by stealing someone else's points. That's not our style"

I turned to leave, the Core secured and glowing faintly in my hand. "Next time, try keeping up without the shortcuts"

Nerath grumbled, Talonis sighed in relief, and I could feel Smug Guy's stunned gaze burning into the back of my head.

As we walked away, Smug Guy's voice rang out. "Wait!"

I stopped, half-turning.

"My name," he said, standing up and dusting himself off, "is Klynt Dravyn. Remember it."

"Oh? My name is Laziel Celestine, you got a cool name," I said with a shrug. "Try to live up to it."

Klynt smirked, his pride clearly wounded but his eyes gleaming with admiration. "You're something else, Laziel Celestine."

I gave him a lazy salute before we disappeared into the jungle.

Unbeknownst to me, Klynt watched us leave, his fists clenching with determination. "One day," he muttered, "I'll be just as awesome as him."
