Chapter 469 The Visiting Strange Woman

"Loyalty is not a bargaining chip!" Ye Liqing sat in the waiting room of the school clinic. She came to look for Xiao Lin, but a woman told her he wasn't there. A pair of large, wrinkled eyes were now unabashedly sizing her up. She was indifferent to this kind of attention. After all, she was used to being stared at—whether by men or women, she was accustomed to this kind of scrutiny and wouldn't get angry.

Li Jingyi sat beside Ye Liqing, wanting to speak up several times, but she held back. Xiao Lin had taken the day off early in the morning without stating when he'd be back. However, based on past experiences, it was likely that he wouldn't come back.

She was torn about whether to tell this woman the truth, but she was reluctant to do so because the other woman seemed so arrogant. It wasn't about verbal arrogance; it was the overall impression she gave.

"Don't you have work to do?" Ye Liqing sipped the poorly made tea, questioning the woman who stayed by her side.

"You're Xiao's friend, of course I'll accompany you. Besides, how busy can the school clinic get?"

This was true—without Xiao Lin, the emergency room was quite idle. Ever since Xiao Lin transferred her son to a municipal oncology specialist hospital, her son's condition had slightly improved. However, given his current physical state, he wasn't ready for surgery. Every three days, a consultation was held to determine the surgical approach. Li Jingyi was grateful to Xiao Lin for such attention.

"Suit yourself." Ye Liqing elegantly sipped bagged tea from a disposable cup. She was the type of woman who could treat endless ugliness like a finely crafted work of art, her heart harboring an incredibly strong dark world.

"Is there a Doctor Xiao here?"

A booming voice echoed from the corridor. Judging by the distance of the voice, the person was still five steps away. Ye Liqing set down her cup—were people here so uncultured?

"I'll go check." Li Jingyi frowned at such loud commotion in the hospital. "Who's shouting out there? Don't they know this is a hospital?"

"What about a hospital? Can a doctor just beat someone up?" The speaker was a middle-aged man, somewhat bald, approximately five feet nine inches tall, with a paunch hanging over his belt. As he spoke, a tuft of hair on his forehead would fall with his agitated movements, making him look quite ridiculous.

"Sir, this is a hospital; you need evidence when you speak." Li Jingyi's frown deepened upon seeing the man. Her hands tucked into the pockets of her white coat, with a stethoscope around her neck. "If you're here for a check-up, please head to the outpatient department. This is the emergency department which does not see general patients."

"Who said I'm here for a check-up? What's with you cursing people the moment you open your mouth!" The middle-aged man was displeased, nearly poking Li Jingyi's face with his finger.

Ye Liqing, holding her disposable cup, moved to a seat at the entrance with great interest, quietly watching the scene unfold.

"Then what are you here for?" Li Jingyi took a deep breath, gently brushed away the man's finger, and took a step back to maintain distance.

"Is there a Doctor Xiao here?"

"What do you want with him?" Li Jingyi glared at the man, alert.

"He beat up my nephew, there has to be an explanation." The man unceremoniously pushed past Li Jingyi and walked in. He saw a woman sitting there, and surprisingly a beautiful one at that, which made him pause, his movements becoming gentler.

"You can't go in there." Li Jingyi shouted from behind, pulling the middle-aged man back. "Dr. Xiao is not here."

"Who are you?" The middle-aged man surveyed the small room and only after confirming no one else was present did he ask about Li Jingyi's identity.

"I'm the head of the emergency department. If you have any problems, you can speak to me." Li Jingyi, intending to take responsibility for the issue, ushered the man out of the office.

"You're the head, that'll do." The middle-aged man, speaking with a regional accent, pulled a pack of soft-pack cigarettes from his pocket and lit one.

"No smoking here." Xiao Ning just happened to come from the special care unit, bringing traditional medicine as per Xiao Lin's instructions for Dan Qing to nurse her weakness.

The middle-aged man impatiently waved his hand, knocking Xiao Ning's tray to the ground. As Xiao Ning was about to explode, Li Jingyi quickly intervened with a look, and Xiao Ning stormed away.

"Sir, you can't smoke inside the hospital. You seem like someone with experience, so you should be able to adhere to this basic rule, right?" Li Jingyi smoothed her hair, responding to the middle-aged man with a slight, leisurely smile.

As the saying goes, someone smiling is hard to hit. The middle-aged man found it difficult to lose his temper, so he threw the cigarette on the ground and ground it out with his foot.

"When will Dr. Xiao be back?" The man's voice drew quite a crowd, though most gathered because of the noise and now mainly stayed to look at the beauties inside. Ye Liqing didn't find this embarrassing; she calmly continued sipping her poor-quality tea, waiting for her person. This small incident didn't make the wait unbearable.

"I am the department head. Can you tell me exactly what's going on? You said our doctor beat someone, surely there's a backstory. Besides, do you have evidence that our doctor assaulted someone?"

"Evidence? The facts are plain to see. My nephew was found stealing hospital medications, and after an investigation, he held a grudge and retaliated violently, beating him up." The middle-aged man was so agitated he struggled to speak coherently, his words jumbled, but Li Jingyi understood. And the person inside, hearing clearly, couldn't help but release an impolite laugh. The middle-aged man, embarrassed, glanced at her, quickly refocusing his assault on Li Jingyi.

"I came today to demand an explanation. Getting beaten and thinking it can just be brushed off like that? No way."

"Sir, your nephew is?" Though she already suspected who it was, out of caution, Li Jingyi wanted to confirm.

"He's the head of the medical department at your hospital, Sun Mingwei." At this point, the middle-aged man's tone grew more arrogant, boasting with a kind of foolish pride. In his mind, just by stating the name, he could dismiss that Xiao youngster's trouble, effectively elevating his status in the Sun Family.

"Oh! You're talking about Minister Sun." Li Jingyi deliberately drew out the "oh", her mind racing as to how to get this person to leave. (To be continued.
