Chapter 464: I Don’t Understand What You Mean
Xia Yusheng stared expressionlessly out the window, his gaze aimlessly lowering to the ground below, from which the ants seemed like insignificant, fragile creatures, easily crushed.
Sometimes he thought that if he weren't part of the Xia Family, perhaps he and Xia Xue would have lived more easily, and the past would not be brought up again. The old man deliberately erased the incident, and if it weren't for Xiaoxue's jealousy, he never would have met Xiao Lin, nor would he have become the one in charge of the Xia Family.
This might have been the old man's way of compensating for the past, a sort of atonement. However, now, how is he supposed to deal with the people behind him? A sense of melancholy he couldn't express overtook him. At this age, what could he do? The old man would never easily let go of a family traitor, and as it appears now, this family is already torn apart. Does he have the power to restore its former glory?
Xiao Lin once said that if it were him, he would never allow this kind of thing to happen—he would root out the problem entirely, leaving no future trouble. Such decisiveness was something Xia Yusheng could never learn in his lifetime, as he was soft-hearted toward familial ties.
"Did you call me in just to see your back?"
When facing Xia Yusheng, Xia Yuxuan's disdain was evident. She picked up a nail file and sat in Xia Yusheng's office chair. The spacious and bright office, though large, felt overly heavy in color.
If it were her, she would make this place a beautiful palace, matching the space with the right people. This place was meant for those with capability, and how could a man who only sighs and hides under the old man's wings have the right to sit here?
Thinking of this, Xia Yuxuan had already dismissed any lingering guilt she initially felt. "I have a lot to do."
"How does it feel sitting there?" Xia Yusheng turned around, his sorrowful eyes fixating on Xia Yuxuan. "Isn't it wonderful? The allure of power is so hard to resist, isn't it?"
"What do you mean?" Xia Yuxuan hesitatingly avoided Xia Yusheng's gaze. "I don't understand what you mean."
"The inspection report on 'inone,' you know very well it's genuine, right?" Xia Yusheng looked down at his feet again, hoping Xia Yuxuan would repent for a moment, allowing him to find an excuse to let her go. "Yu Xuan, if you want to sit in this position, you could just say it outright. Do you not know what kind of people the Wang Family is? Do you really think he would hand 'Rhine' over to you?"
"Brother, are you blowing things out of proportion? It's just a simple product quality issue, yet you can exaggerate it to this extent. It's really laughable." Secretly, Xia Yuxuan clenched her purse tightly, pretending not to understand.
"Do I need to be even more direct?"
"Brother, did Xiao Lin spread rumors about me in front of you because of my attitude toward Xia Xue? So now, he's slandering me to you? He has a grudge against the Wang Family and can't drag innocent people into it just because of that. What a cunning little man—he even deliberately had Xiaoxue involved in fashion to covet the Xia Family's assets. Brother, please don't fall for it!"
"Coveting the Xia Family's assets?" Xia Yusheng's heart ached, leaving him without even the smallest shred of hope. When did his own siblings become so alien to him? Merely for such an empty position? "What we have doesn't mean much to him. Xia Yuxuan, don't take yourself too seriously."
"Brother, did you call me over just to lecture me?"
Xia Yuxuan furrowed her eyebrows, feeling that every extra minute spent there was a form of torture. Today's Xia Yusheng was too strange for her liking; she hated those eyes fixed on her, as if they could see right through her, making her uneasy.
"'Rhine' is now facing a powerful competitor, and there's a traitor within. You are part of the Xia Family, and I hope you can stand on the same side as me." Xia Yusheng walked back to the desk, leaning both hands on the desktop. "Before the Wang Family makes a move, let's identify those Shang Family businesses under them. What do you think?"
"Traitor? Are you suspecting me?" Xia Yuxuan suddenly stood up angrily from the chair, pointing at Xia Yusheng with a disbelieving sneer. "I was wondering why that kid dared to talk so brazenly in the meeting just now; turns out it was all your instigation. How did I not think that you're using outsiders to suppress your own family to secure your current position?"
Is this obstinacy? Xia Yusheng was still unwilling. "Do I need to show you proof of what you and Fatty Wang have done?"
"What?" Xia Yuxuan was startled, nearly falling back into the chair.
"Give me the list of Shang Family businesses under the Wang Family; this is your last chance." Xia Yusheng weakly abandoned any further persuasion and waved her off. "You can go now. This is your only chance; it's up to you whether you seize it or not."
After leaving the chairman's office, Xia Yuxuan immediately dialed a number. "I need to see you; I must see you now." She said, hurrying into the parking garage and driving out of 'Rhine.'
A car followed her into a hotel parking lot, its camera's shutter clicking rhythmically. "Chairman, third Miss has entered 'Hao Dun.' Should we continue the tailing?"
"Continue, I want every move she makes recorded—who she meets, what she does. Nothing can be missed."
Xia Yusheng set down the phone, surveying the large office, and couldn't help but burst into laughter. In business, as in war, even siblings can turn against each other. What is impossible then?
Xia Yuxuan entered 'Hao Dun' on the twenty-seventh floor straight from the underground garage, quickly finding Room 2708. It was so familiar, like her own home. After glancing around, she knocked and entered. The shutter captured her image as she entered, but the other person's face was not within the frame—only the top of a belly protruding outside was caught.
"Xia Yusheng seems to already know about my relationship with you." Xia Yuxuan said as she slumped into the loveseat, pouring herself a glass of red wine. The afternoon meeting had caught her off guard; Xiao Lin's every word felt like a whip branding her, each strike unmistakable.
"Let him know; what can he do to you? Report it? That would be incredibly foolish. If such a big scandal gets exposed, your brother will have his hands full," Fatty Wang said, wearing a bathrobe as he sat beside Xia Yuxuan, wrapping an arm around her shoulder to pull her into his embrace.
