Chapter 452: The Visiting Strange Woman
"Guarding is not a bargaining chip!" Ye Liqing sat in the reception room of the school hospital. She came to find Xiao Lin, but a woman told her he wasn't in. A pair of wrinkled large eyes were rudely sizing her up. She didn't mind this kind of courtesy; she was used to being scrutinized, whether by men or women. After a while, it wouldn't bother her anymore.
Li Jingyi sat next to Ye Liqing, wanting to speak several times but held back each time. Xiao Lin had taken leave early and didn't say when he'd return, but usually, he wouldn't come back under such circumstances.
She was struggling with whether to tell this woman the truth, but in reality, she was reluctant because the other woman was too arrogant—not verbally, but her whole demeanor gave that impression.
"Don't you have work to do?" Ye Liqing sipped the poor-quality tea, asking the woman who had been waiting by her side.
"You're Xiao Xiao's friend; of course, I need to accompany you. Besides, how busy can the school hospital get?"
This was quite honest. Without Xiao Lin, the emergency room was quite free. Since Xiao Lin transferred her son to the city's specialized oncology hospital, her son's condition had improved somewhat. However, due to his current physical condition, he was still not suitable for surgery. They held a consultation every three days to determine the surgical plan. Li Jingyi was grateful to Xiao Lin for such attention.
"Then do as you please." Gracefully sipping her tea from a disposable cup, Ye Liqing was the kind of woman who could treat even the most wretched experiences as finely crafted art, revealing the immensely strong dark world within her.
"Is Dr. Xiao here!"
A voice as loud as a booming bell came from the corridor. Judging by the distance of the voice, the person was still five steps away. Ye Liqing set down her cup, wondering how people here could be so uncivilized?
"I'll go check." Li Jingyi frowned. Shouting loudly in a hospital was surely inappropriate. "Who's making such a racket outside? Don't you know this is a hospital?"
"So what if it's a hospital? Can doctors just beat someone up like that?" The speaker was a middle-aged man, slightly bald, about five foot nine, with a protruding belly sagging over his belt. As he spoke, a lock of hair fell across his forehead whenever he got agitated, looking quite comical.
"Sir, this is a hospital. Please speak with evidence." Seeing the man, Li Jingyi frowned more deeply, her hands in her white coat pockets, a stethoscope hanging around her neck. "If you're here to see a doctor, please go to the front clinic. This is the emergency department, not for regular patients."
"Who said I'm here to see a doctor? Why are you cursing people as soon as you open your mouth?" The middle-aged man got upset, pointing his finger so close it nearly touched Li Jingyi's face.
Holding her disposable cup with interest, Ye Liqing shifted to a seat at the door, watching the scene silently.
"Then what exactly are you here for?" Li Jingyi took a deep breath, gently knocking away the man's finger, taking a step back to maintain distance.
"Is there a doctor named Xiao here?"
"What business do you have with him?" Li Jingyi asked warily, glaring at the man.
"He beat up my nephew; there has to be an explanation." Without any courtesy, the man pushed aside Li Jingyi and walked in. As soon as he entered, he saw a woman sitting inside, a beautiful one at that, which made him pause in surprise and become much gentler in demeanor.
"You can't go in there." Li Jingyi shouted from behind, grabbing the middle-aged man. "Dr. Xiao is not here."
"Who are you?" The middle-aged man looked around the small space, confirming there was indeed no one there before thinking to ask about Li Jingyi's identity.
"I am the head of the emergency department. You can discuss any problems with me." Li Jingyi, intending to take responsibility, ushered the man out of the office.
"You're the head, that's okay then." The middle-aged man spoke with a local accent, taking out a pack of soft cigarettes from his pocket and lighting one.
"No smoking in here." Xiao Ning happened to come over from the special care ward, as per Xiao Lin's instructions to brew traditional medicine for Dan Qing's weak condition daily.
Impatiently, the middle-aged man waved, knocking the tray out of Xiao Ning's hand onto the ground. Seeing Xiao Ning about to lose her temper, Li Jingyi quickly stepped in, signaling to her with her eyes to let it go. Xiao Ning stormed off.
"Sir, smoking is prohibited inside the hospital. I see you're a rather experienced person, and you should be able to follow this simple rule, right?" Brushing back her hair, Li Jingyi smiled mildly at the middle-aged man.
As the saying goes, you don't strike a person who is smiling. The middle-aged man was momentarily at a loss on how to throw a tantrum and instead threw the cigarette to the ground, stamping it out with his foot.
"When is Dr. Xiao coming back?" The man's loud voice drew a crowd, but most were attracted by the commotion, staying now to admire the beauty inside. Ye Liqing didn't find anything embarrassing about this. She continued to drink the poor-quality tea, waiting for the person she was to meet. This little episode didn't make the wait seem burdensome.
"I'm the head here. Can you tell me exactly what happened? You said our doctor assaulted someone. There must be reasons and consequences, right? Besides, do you have evidence to prove our doctor assaulted someone?"
"What evidence? The fact stands that my nephew was caught stealing hospital drugs. During inspection, he bore a grudge and retaliated, assaulting him." The middle-aged man struggled to articulate due to excitement, mixing up his words, but Li Jingyi understood clearly. The woman inside, listening intently, couldn't help but burst into a rude laugh. The middle-aged man shot her an embarrassed glance before launching into his second attack on Li Jingyi.
"I came here today to demand an explanation. It's impossible to just beat someone and have the issue disappear."
"Sir, who is your nephew?" Although she already had an inkling, Li Jingyi wanted to be certain out of caution.
"Your hospital's medical director, Sun Mingwei." Saying this, the middle-aged man's tone grew heavier. Everyone in the hospital knew Sun Mingwei's background. The man now flaunted this name like a big shot, thinking that just bringing it up could solve everything against that Xiao kid, earning him a reputation with the Sun Family.
"Oh! You're talking about Minister Sun." Deliberately elongating the word "oh," Li Jingyi's mind raced on how to send this person away. (To be continued.
