Chapter 398: The Opportunity Was Not Well Seized
"Who goes there?" Upon discovering the intruder, everyone raised their guns towards the shadow at the window, ready to shoot him full of holes should he make any unwise move.
"If I can save him, what will you give in return?"
No one saw how the black-clad man opened the window. By the time he finished speaking, he was already standing in front of the Lion, moving faster than breath. Amidst the chaos, someone fired a shot, a barrage of bullets coming from behind him.
The man in black didn't dodge, didn't even move. Just when everyone thought he would be pierced by bullets and fall, he merely turned around, performing a miracle before their eyes. He simply stretched out his hand, catching the bullets with his gloved right hand, not missing a single one.
The Lion looked at the masked man before him and gestured for everyone in the room to leave. He wasn't worried about this man being here to kill him; if that were the case, he wouldn't still be alive. There was no one here who was his match, including himself.
"You said you could save him, what are your terms?"
The man in black chuckled softly, his fingers stroking the knife handle.
"For wounds of this severity, an ordinary person would have been dead already. Your man has remarkable vitality." The black-clad man's voice seemed infinitely hollow and distant, even if you were only a few feet away, it felt so ethereal: "In this city, there's only one person who can save him, but I reckon he's unlikely to have time to come here right now, and even if he did, he wouldn't come."
"Who is he?"
"The Military Doctor!" The man in black chuckled sinisterly.
"Dragon Soul, Military Doctor?"
"Oh, Dragon Soul, eh?" The man in black wavered a bit, moving from in front of the Lion to the other side: "So, shall I save him or not?"
"What are your terms?" The Lion wasn't counting on that so-called Military Doctor; it was clear that the person standing here now was the most likely one. It wasn't wise to look far when help was near.
"Why decline those two people's demands?"
The Lion frowned; when had this person been here? The security system detected nothing at all.
"Doesn't matter, it's right not to cooperate. It seems you're not stupid." The man in black continued.
"Who are you, really?"
"I'll help you save your man, but you have to give me your life." The man in black jumped to a vacant spot on the side, seemingly unable to stay idle as he paced the room.
"That's tricky, his life isn't worth enough to trade for mine." The Lion's gaze followed him around, while the breathing of the man lying there grew weaker.
"Doesn't matter! Your life, even if not given to me, will be given to someone else." The man in black clapped, expressing his regret: "It's only a matter of time."
"There should be a third option, right?" The Lion rolled his eyes, squinting; from his experience, the sudden appearance of this person wasn't just for killing him.
"Oh! How about giving you a better place to reestablish Liger City, a place much larger than here, how about that?" The man in black jumped back to the person lying down, using fingers to feel the breath at his nostrils: "Oh, if you don't decide soon, I might not even be able to save him."
"You want me to give up Liger City?" The Lion shouted sharply.
"Not to give up Liger City, but to give you a bigger place to establish Liger City anew, while this one is left to me; I just need an empty city." The man in black explained impatiently, his mood as erratic as himself, ever volatile: "You have three minutes to decide; afterward, this person will die, and you will die here too."
"If I say no now, you'll kill me?"
"If I don't kill you, how will I take this city?" The man in black suddenly thought this old man didn't seem all that clever; a single question required him to explain repeatedly, which was quite troublesome.
"You have a minute and a half left."
"How can I trust you?" The Lion asked in a deep voice.
"Oh! You only need to believe that I can kill you."
The Lion stared at the mask as if his gaze could pierce through it. This person didn't leave him any room for choice; as he said, death was only a matter of time.
"I..."
"Time's up!" The man who had been loitering by the door a moment ago was suddenly in front of the Lion, a flash of cold light appeared, and a sharp dagger was now against the Lion's throat.
"Since you love this child so much, I'll let you die the same way he did."
The person lying down was no longer breathing, not a second over three minutes. The man in black shook his head.
"Three minutes isn't very long for normal people, is it that the older you get, the more thoughts you have? You could've lived longer, at least until I cleared away those I needed to, but it's a pity you're just too old. Such a simple matter, yet you make it so complicated. Aren't people afraid of death? Is it a question that needs pondering?" The man in black muttered to the Lion.
The Lion's mouth gaped open, vocal cords severed with a single cut, unable to make a sound.
"What do you want to say?" The black-clad man leaned close to the Lion's mouth, watching it open and close.
"W...hy..." a hissing sound emerged from the Lion, the man frowning.
"Military Doctor! Xiao Lin!" The man in black pondered a moment before giving the Lion an answer, pressing the dagger deeper into his throat.
Gazing at the two dead bodies, he couldn't help but sigh: "Dead people are much more troublesome than the living." He looked with distaste at the two corpses before him, while outside the room, there were more people eager to become corpses.
"Had you been a bit smarter, you wouldn't have had to die, and I wouldn't have to go through so much trouble."
With that, the man in black removed the mask, revealing a face identical to the Lion's.
"Dispose of the bodies." His icy voice almost froze the air; the man in black always seemed to be talking to himself. He opened the door and walked out.
"Boss, are you alright?" The subordinates waiting outside rushed forward anxiously as the Lion emerged.
"Hmm, bury Xiao Wu's body." The Lion coughed twice and stepped into the elevator.
"Yes!" The boss seemed a bit odd, but didn't give it much thought, attributing it to the grief of losing a son.
Leaning in the corner of the elevator, the Lion looked at his face in the mirrored glass.
"Looks pretty good, was probably quite handsome when young, but still a bit lacking compared to myself." He muttered to himself as he caressed the wrinkled face. Following his habit, the elevator stopped at the 24th floor, the main base of the Liger Gang, where all major and minor affairs were discussed and managed. (To be continued.
