Chapter 385: The person has been found
"Niu Niu, take care of your mom. I have to discuss something with the director. Go to bed early." Xiao Lin closed the ward's door, his expression turned grave. Dan Qing's complexion didn't look so good; after such a tumultuous ride, there was a subtle wheezing in her breath.
"Xiao Xiao, I'm still a bit uneasy. This patient, Dan Qing, doesn't seem to be doing well, and it's hard to find a kidney donor right now. Can she afford to wait?"
"Director, regarding the expenses, you can settle them directly with me."
"That's secondary. The crucial point is the patient's survival chance. If something unexpected happens at the hospital, it could affect its reputation going forward."
"Director, don't you trust my abilities?" Xiao Lin confidently lifted his sharp chin; when it comes to medical skills, he has every reason to boast.
"That's not it. I'm just worried about her before the surgery..."
"I'll find a solution for the kidney donor," Xiao Lin stated directly.
"That's good then." Yu Zhengbo didn't say more; with Xiao Lin making such a guarantee, any further objection would seem petty: "We'll fully cooperate and hope for a successful outcome this time."
After seeing Yu Zhengbo off, Xiao Lin sat on the long bench in the hallway, stretching out his long legs, with his head resting on the back of the bench. The kidney donor issue was the biggest problem for him. Even if he could find a donor, he had to see if it matched.
Dan Qing seemed to have no relatives. Whether that's true or not, since she never mentions them, even if they existed, the chances of them offering a kidney are slim. Niu Niu is just a child and can't bear such a surgery; he wouldn't do it anyway. Fingers pinching his forehead, he pondered.
"Should we consider the black market trades?"
Hua Qingyi pulled out a cigarette and handed it to Xiao Lin. Smoking is forbidden in the hospital, and now it's almost midnight with most of the hallway lights extinguished. As a nurse walked by without saying anything, perhaps because of Xiao Lin's status as a doctor here, they enjoyed a small exception.
There is a decent market for human organ trade abroad, and it's not impossible to obtain matching organs via illegal channels. As long as the price is right, it's cash on delivery with top-notch service, ensuring freshness, safety, and speed in any country.
Hua Qingyi's suggestion could be a shortcut, but it's illegal. According to his knowledge, there is such a line domestically too, though the market hasn't yet formed a scale.
"Organ trade is illegal. Do you want to be kicked out again?" Xiao Lin reminded Hua Qingyi that it would be the second time entering Dragon Soul if things went wrong. He wouldn't let Hua Qingyi do such risky things, especially during this transitional period. If this matter gets exposed, competitors would constantly hold it over their heads, threatening Hua Muyun's political standing. Any issue threatening Hua Muyun would be nipped in the bud.
"Even I can see that woman's condition. You should be even clearer; she can't afford to wait," Hua Qingyi took a drag of his cigarette: "Since you've taken on this matter, you must be responsible for your impulsiveness, that's your nature, being a bleeding heart."
"Alright, I'll handle it myself." Xiao Lin irritably tousled his hair and stood up from the bench. Hua Qingyi's words tempted him, but neither of them should do it. Oh! It seems he'll owe a favor to the old man.
"Debts of gratitude, huh!"
Hua Qingyi's car was parked outside the hospital. Xiao Lin pulled up his collar; he was suffering from severe insomnia recently, and the wind blew, making it hard to keep his eyes open. Late at night, a black SUV boldly parked right at the entrance. In an already cramped space, such a large vehicle inevitably drew attention, especially with a long-haired beauty leaning against the front.
Xiao Lin wasn't in the mood to look at women; just hearing the word woman was enough to give him a headache. Hua Qingyi just glanced briefly; his particular tastes made him uninterested in women with slim figures, except for Angel, whom he encountered in the Middle East. He still sometimes dreamt of his Angel.
Beep, beep, beep! The horn sounded sharply as they walked past the SUV, forcing Xiao Lin to turn again to look at the woman wearing a hat.
"Get in!" The woman opened the car door for Xiao Lin; in the dim light, Xiao Lin recognized her.
"Chief Wu, what's going on?"
Wu Shuang, wasting no words, sat herself in the driver's seat: "Are you getting in or not? I've tracked down the people you asked me to find."
Without hesitation, Xiao Lin got into the car, and Hua Qingyi followed him.
"This is the full footage from the street shop's camera. A little girl was dragged to the ground on the roadside, approximately a minute of footage." Wu Shuang turned the steering wheel, her tone icy, making Xiao Lin uncomfortable.
On the cell phone screen, a scooter traveled from east to west along the street, moving slowly. Aboard were two young men, around twenty-five or six years old. At the time, Niu Niu was coming out of a store with a wallet in hand and carrying some snacks. The motorcycle approached her, and the person at the back snatched her wallet, dragging Niu Niu to the ground with the pull.
"Damn, these people are despicable, stealing from a child! Are they even human?" Wu Shuang slammed her hands on the steering wheel, her anger convincing Xiao Lin to abandon any teasing thoughts.
"You wouldn't come to find me so late just to..."
"Why? Are you scared?"
Wu Shuang glared fiercely at Xiao Lin through the rearview mirror. Witnessing the whole process, her mind felt as if it had been hit hard. Such a person, worse than an animal, must be taught a lesson.
"I'm not afraid, but don't you think your unauthorized action counts as breaking the law?" Xiao Lin glared back at Wu Shuang, fully understanding her thoughts.
"Isn't the great Buddha here? What am I afraid of?" The car jolted as it turned onto a bridge. On the late-night road, it was sparsely populated, with only a few small shops lit up, waiting for customers. Most were small-scale dining businesses.
Wu Shuang parked the car by the roadside, "The person in the footage comes to that noodle shop across the street for a midnight snack every night."
Xiao Lin shifted his gaze to the ramen shop at the corner across the street.
"Mugging incidents with motorbikes aren't happening for the first time; many cases fade away after being reported. These small cases are generally delayed." Wu Shuang continued.
"So you're planning a private investigation?" Xiao Lin exhaled at the car window, "Anyone feeling hungry?" He jumped out of the car, hands in his pockets, and ran across the road.
There was no divider on the four-lane road, and traffic wasn't as congested as during the day, so jaywalking was a breach of traffic regulations in Xiao Lin's mind. Hua Qingyi and Wu Shuang weren't familiar with each other; the first impressions at the traffic bureau weren't great. So, when Xiao Lin got out of the car, he also ran to the other side.
Three bowls of beef ramen, heavily spiced with chili sauce, were warming for the two of them.
"It's almost one in the morning. Are you sure they'll show up?" Hua Qingyi put down his chopsticks, genuinely finding the food unappetizing. He picked out the beef and didn't touch much of the noodles.
"The informant said so." Wu Shuang glanced at his bowl and snorted. Kids from wealthy families are indeed picky eaters.
Xiao Lin gave Hua Qingyi a sideways glance and sipped the noodle soup. He wasn't particularly choosy with food, just the environment. Compared to Lin Jiaqi's place, this was better. At least there was no worry about dust falling from the stairs since there weren't any stairs here.
"Three guys just passed by the entrance."
Too lazy to bother with the two, Xiao Lin paid the bill, pulled up his hood, and followed them to the right. In front of them, a few people walked unsteadily, occasionally cursing out loud, a strong smell of alcohol hitting their noses.
"Damn it!" One man cursed heavily, throwing a lady's purse aside, "Pretentious woman, just this little money?" he said, tossing out a glossy wallet.
"How about you guys?" This man asked the other two, clearly not doing well in business, holding only two or three one-hundred yuan notes and some change.
Hua Qingyi picked up the wallet from the ground, only a few bank cards were left inside. He handed it to Wu Shuang, "It has an ID card, so we can notify the owner to claim it."
"Not much, just about a thousand yuan." The short man took out their loot, a bulky wallet, "Quite a few cards in here!"
"Let me see!" The first man snatched the wallet. He seemed to be the leader, pulling out an ID card from it, "Not a local." He immediately emptied the cash and tossed the wallet aside.
"Boss, should we change places? There's no one rich around here." The fat man looked steady and suggested, "Staying in one location for crimes makes it easy to get caught; it's unsafe."
"Hmm!" The leader thought for a moment, mixed the stolen money together, and handed eight one-hundred yuan bills to the two men. "Move tomorrow."
They turned into an alley, entering a residential house.
Xiao Lin raised his head. The houses here were connected, private ones, with illegal structures added on the original foundation. Even renting one room cost a few hundred. Due to the cheap rent, many outsiders lived here, and landlords, seeing the rental potential, kept building room partitions on the original groundwork.
Soon, a light on the third floor was turned on.
"That's the one!" Xiao Lin pointed to the room with the light on, "Officer Wu, enter from the front; I'll break in through the external window, Qing Yi, guard the downstairs."
"Alright!" Wu Shuang had no objections. As a police officer, entering from the front was the best way. Xiao Lin would guard the window, and Hua Qingyi would secure the passage, making a sensible arrangement. She had nothing to criticize.
