Soulless Lord: Empty life

Chapter 16: Embers of Resolve

The escape tunnel was cold, damp, and narrow, with jagged walls that clawed at Tobi's skin as the group pressed forward. Each step echoed faintly, a cruel reminder of how close the cultists might be behind them. The faint light from Hiki's handheld lantern flickered with every uneven footfall, casting long, wavering shadows on the walls.

Tobi's breaths came in short, ragged bursts, his body still weak from the earlier battle. His chest tightened with each inhale, but the pain in his lungs was nothing compared to the weight in his heart.

"Hossam..." he whispered, his voice barely audible.

Friend padded silently beside him, the black fox's spectral form almost blending into the gloom. "Don't lose focus now," Friend said, his tone unusually soft. "If you let grief win, you'll make Hossam's sacrifice meaningless."

Tobi clenched his fists, the raw emotion threatening to spill over. "I should've stayed. I could've helped him. Maybe… maybe he'd still be here."

Friend's ears flicked as he turned to meet Tobi's gaze. "Maybe. Or maybe you'd both be dead. That's the thing about sacrifice, Tobi. Someone has to make it so others can move forward. You're the one who needs to move forward now."

Hiki's sharp voice cut through the darkness. "Stay close and stay quiet. We're almost at the drop point, but there's no guarantee it's secure."

The group came to a stop at a heavy steel door embedded into the tunnel wall. Hiki motioned for Moritaka, who immediately stepped forward, his frame casting an imposing shadow as he inspected the door.

"It's intact," Moritaka said, his voice gruff but steady. "No sign of tampering."

Hiki nodded and pressed her hand against a scanner beside the door. The faint hum of ancient machinery filled the tunnel as the door creaked open, revealing a small, hidden chamber. It was sparsely furnished, with only a single table, a few chairs, and shelves lined with old supplies.

Hiki stepped inside, her eyes scanning every corner for threats. Satisfied, she motioned for the others to follow.

As the door sealed shut behind them, the group collapsed into the chairs, their exhaustion palpable. Tobi sank into a corner, pulling his knees to his chest. He couldn't stop replaying the moment Hossam fell, the light in his eyes snuffed out by the cultist leader's dark energy. The memory gnawed at him, a relentless predator tearing at his resolve.

"We need to regroup," Hiki said, her voice cutting through the oppressive silence. "This location should buy us some time, but it won't hold if they're tracking us. Tobi, you need to rest. You're no good to us in your current state."

Tobi's head snapped up. "Rest? After what just happened? Hossam is dead because I wasn't strong enough! How am I supposed to rest when I keep letting everyone down?"

Moritaka scowled, his arms crossed over his chest. "We've all lost people, kid. You're not the only one carrying weight. Suck it up and use it to get stronger, or you'll be next."

"Enough," Hiki snapped, her authoritative tone silencing the room. She turned to Tobi, her expression softening slightly. "Grief is a part of this life, Tobi. But Moritaka's right—you have to channel it. If you let it paralyze you, it'll kill you and everyone around you."

Tobi looked away, his jaw tight. He wanted to argue, to shout, but he knew they were right.

Friend hopped onto the table, his glowing eyes fixed on Tobi. "You want to honor Hossam? Then listen. This isn't about being strong enough to save everyone. It's about being strong enough to save who you can."

The words hit Tobi like a blow to the chest. He took a shaky breath and nodded, more to himself than anyone else. "Okay. What's the plan?"

Hiki's lips twitched into the faintest hint of approval. "First, we need to figure out how they're tracking us. They're after you, Tobi. That mark on you is more than a beacon—it's a target. Until we understand it, we're at a disadvantage."

"What do you mean?" Tobi asked, his voice steadier now.

Hiki walked over to him, her gaze unwavering. "The cultists mentioned your mark. They're after it for a reason. We need to figure out what it is and how to neutralize it."

Moritaka snorted. "Good luck with that. Unless one of us happens to be an expert on ancient underground prophecies, we're shooting in the dark."

"Not entirely," Friend interjected, though they couldn't see or hear him. Friend's voice dropped to a whisper, directed at Tobi. "Remember the platform in the chamber? The energy there reacted to you for a reason. We need to go back… but smarter this time."

Tobi relayed Friend's words, omitting the source. "The chamber we found earlier—the one with the platform and crystals. I think it might hold answers about the mark. If we could go back and study it…"

Hiki frowned, her fingers drumming on the table. "It's a risk. If the cultists are still there, we'd be walking into another ambush. But it's a lead. We don't have many of those."

Moritaka raised an eyebrow. "You sure you're ready for that, kid? Last time, you barely held it together."

Tobi met his gaze, his voice firm. "I don't have a choice. If this mark is tied to me, I need to understand it. And if it'll help us stop the cultists, then I'm in."

Hiki nodded. "We'll rest tonight and move out at first light. Tobi, use this time to recover. We'll need you at full strength."

The group settled into the sparse chamber, the tension slowly giving way to exhaustion. As the others drifted off to sleep, Tobi remained awake, staring at the faintly glowing lines of his mark. Friend curled up beside him, his tail flicking lazily.

"Do you think I can really do this?" Tobi asked softly.

Friend's voice was calm but resolute. "You've already started. You just don't see it yet. The question isn't whether you can do this, Tobi. It's whether you're willing to keep trying when everything feels impossible."

Tobi closed his eyes, Hossam's face flashing in his mind. He clenched his fists, the resolve in his heart growing stronger. "I won't let him down. Not again."

As the chamber fell into silence, the faint hum of the mark on his skin was a reminder of the path ahead—one fraught with danger but also with purpose. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, but for the first time, Tobi felt ready to face them.
