Soul Traveler: Venator.

Chapter 5: New Surroundings. (1)

His apartment was small, it was sparsely furnished, and it was absolutely filthy. He took a quick walk around the apartment, and once he was done, he grabbed a bunch of clothes off the floor, placed on a stool and sat on them, sighing as he shook his head.

'Nothing in the fridge but beer, empty food cartons all over the kitchen and almost every surface in this place, and some form of narcotic in the bedroom. Did this idiot even pay any hospital bills? His ex looked to be well off, so maybe he didn't. I'll have to confirm once I've completely assimilated this body.'

Some time was spent resting and recovering, at least as much as could be done considering the extent of the injuries. As Rex was about to succumb to his fatigue and fall asleep, a knock on his apartment door jolted him awake. The knock was barely audible, but was still there nonetheless, and it prompted him to approach the door tentatively. As he reached the door, he realised the knocks were coming from low down on the door, and the body's instincts told Kumkani that it was safe. Upon opening the door, he was greeted by the sight of a small girl, no older than eight, standing at the door with two large containers of still hot food.

"Mr. Rex." She greeted meekly. "Grandma told me to bring you some food. She said she made too much."

Kumkani looked down at the clearly nervous child, and wondered just how poorly Horatio must have treated her, considering how little regard he held for his own daughter. He crouched down with some difficulty, with his body being stiffer than he would have liked, and smiled as warmly as he could before gently placing his palm on the child's head.

"Thank you." He gurgled softly, with the few words he said earlier having completely wrecked his throat.

The girl looked confused, but also panicked and concerned due to Rex speaking the way he did. When she saw the bandage around his throat, he indicated with his hand that it had been injured, which was why he could barely speak. He then scooped the food up, balancing the containers in his open hand and nodded at the girl before closing the door. He placed the food on the kitchen table – after having knocked a few empty containers off – and took a deep breath.

'My throat is fucked. I can't eat this.' He thought to himself.

He sat once again on the stool and this time, he dozed right off, with both his body and soul resting. The rest was interrupted once again in the dead of night however, as the apartment was filled with light so bright, one would think it was day time. Rex was briefly disoriented, but quickly came to, and walked over to the lounge window – which was actually a sliding door that led on to the small balcony. The light so aggressive, Horatio didn't want to see where it was coming from, however upon drawing the curtain, he realised that the light was coming from above. A massive wall, which put the border he saw earlier to shame. In spite being fairly high up, the light was still perched higher. The wall was fairly far off, however so powerful were the lights that they were still so bright.

'The walls in the center are to keep us away from the rich. What is so bad out there that it's being kept away from us? How close are we to the various Zones?'

Rex went back into the house and discovered that the position of the bedroom was such that it was able to completely keep the bright lights out. However, instead of trying to fall asleep on that filthy bed, he pulled the stool he was sitting on into the bedroom, sat on it, and entered the Mind Realm, opting to process more of the information that was left in the mind. Kumkani took out the book he had been taking notes in and continued to do just that, and the book changed in size as he wrote, becoming more of a Tome with time. Time I the Mind realm flowed differently to time outside, so by the time morning came, he had ingested a considerable amount of Horatio's memories, and written many pages of notes. He exited the realm, and once he opened his eyes, he stood up and stretched his good arm.

'I need to explore this Slum. I need to see if there is any Mana to found here, and if so, how difficult it would be to extract. I need to grade this Dimension before taking the next job.'

Kumkani then took his phone out from his pocket and looked for the charger in his filthy room. Perhaps owing to the fact that he had processed more memories, he found it incredibly easily and plugged it in. To his immense surprise, the screen came on and the phone started charging, as cracked as the screen was.

'Well, that's fortunate.' He thought.

It wasn't too long before he had the phone on, and a number of notifications went off as texts and the like came in. An influx of handy information also came in, such as how much he had earned during the last job, what the currency that they used was called, which he learned were called Expeditions when new Zones were scouted. He also learned how much of that money was taken by the hospital, and how much he yet owed loan sharks.

'This guy was living so inefficiently. How was in such debt, when I can't recall even a single contribution towards his kid's bills? I can recall him paying for rent, take aways, alcohol and drugs, but that's about it. Even his equipment is incredibly old – especially considering how without any Aura, the kit should be the best he can afford.'

Kumkani then stood up and opened the wardrobe, deciding to look over what clothing and equipment he had in there. Just as he was starting to look it over, there was a knock at the door, and judging by the force behind the knocking, it wasn't the child from the previous night. Kumkani, made his way over to the door and opened it cautiously, to find a woman in her early sixties standing there. She looked him up and down, before pursing her lips and shaking her head.

"You look awful." She said grumpily. "Jess told me you couldn't talk, but by the looks of you, I doubt you can do much else either."

Kumkani couldn't even get a grunt or a gesture in before the old lady pushed her way into the apartment.
