Treant

Monster Level - III / IV

Soul Type - Composite

Intelligence - Low

Strength - High

Magic - Low

Rarity - Common

Looking like trees with black eyes and gaping maws, treants are powerful but slow opponents that can come in a wide variety of sizes. From thin and flexible willows to massive redwoods treants appear as any type of tree, and as time passes they get more and more 'generic' tree features, including leaves, fruit and bark markings. A treant's level is based on if they fit on a normal dungeon floor, or if they need the extra space the fourth layer provides.

These tree monsters fight with their branches and roots, dragging themselves along the ground to chase foes. Their attacks can come out remarkably fast, and their thick bark means hurting them is very hard for most people. But they're very slow to move, and usually quite weak to fire. You can't kill them with a torch, but a full lantern might do the trick and a fire mage will utterly ruin one.

Treants are odd monsters in that they occur both naturally and can be formed by other monsters. Dryads are infamous for creating them, but several other fey and nature based monsters can animate trees into treants. Animated treants are no less intelligent than their natural counterparts, and can survive the death of their animator. No one is quite sure why there's a limit on how many treants a monster can conjure up.

Treant sap smells like maple syrup but it's unfortunately poisonous. It can be used in many items, so delvers have devised many ways of harvesting it. Treant fruit on the other hand is safe, and comes in a wide variety ranging from copies of normal fruits to unique hybrids.

Merge

Common Name : Dollfolk

Benefits : Tough skin, flexibility

Weaknesses : Slow healing

A simple look will explain how treant merges got the name dollfolk. Their skin hardens, becoming as tough as wood. To allow movement and flexibility fine lines and breaks in the skin are added. This gives those people the appearance of a very well crafted doll with fine joints. Some dollfolk use makeup to hide the lines, while others emphasize them.

That tough skin is an obvious benefit, as it resists blows and even things like open fire better than human skin ever could. However dollfolk are also surprisingly flexible. The alterations that give them their joints also make it so they have far more articulation than the average human. Doll folk can bend their limbs further than even a double jointed human can.

Ironically the main weakness of the merge is that wounds that get past the skin take longer to fully heal than they would on a human. Of course magical healing can bypass that entirely. People who work in hard jobs that frequently cause small cuts and injuries are willing to pay good money to acquire a treant for a dollfolk merge.

While dollfolk skin is tough, it's still as sensitive as human skin. Which means hitting them 'as a joke' is just mean. Just because a punch or slap can't cause real damage doesn't mean it won't hurt!
