Chapter 290: Chapter 290: Tang San Gets Beaten, Green-Robed Girl Biluo Steps In, and a Matchmaker Appears
The Slaughter City lay bathed under the eerie light of a full moon hanging high in the purple-tinged night sky. Amidst the tangled alleys, Tang San, compelled by rationality, made a tough call—abandoning his teacher, Yu Xiaogang, and fleeing from the swarm of dark soul masters on his heels.
Despite his determination, Tang San had overestimated his strength.
As soon as he left Yu Xiaogang behind, he activated Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track, bursting forth at an astonishing speed. However, his skill was no match for the agility-type Soul King tracking him, who quickly closed the distance. Within moments, Tang San was surrounded by the fallen soul masters, and a brutal beatdown ensued.
At first, Tang San resisted, summoning his Clear Sky Hammer martial soul and attempting to fight back with Disorder Splitting Wind Hammer Technique. Yet, against a group of enemies, each stronger than him and numbering in the double digits, his efforts were futile. He was quickly struck down, and forced to huddle on the ground with his arms shielding his head, enduring blow after blow.
Soon enough, a sudden shout pierced the chaotic night.
"Help! There's been a murder!"
The shout sent a jolt through the city's patrolling enforcers, who quickly rushed over and found Yu Xiaogang slumped unconscious against a wall. At the far end of the alley, they saw a group of dark soul masters surrounding Tang San, who lay beaten and bleeding.
"Quick! The law enforcers are here—scatter!"
Seeing the enforcers approach, the dark soul masters feigned panic and quickly dispersed. The enforcers checked Yu Xiaogang's condition and confirmed that he was only unconscious, not dead. Tang San, too, lay bruised and battered but alive. With no fatalities, the enforcers, indifferent as ever, left them behind and resumed their patrols.
"Everyone's alive, nothing for us to handle—let's move."
As the enforcers disappeared down the alley, a figure emerged from the shadows. A young girl, her long black hair loose and a worn green robe hanging over her slight frame, cautiously approached. She first helped Yu Xiaogang to the wall for support, then turned to Tang San and carefully lifted him.
"Hey! Are you alright?"
She shook Tang San's shoulders, her voice filled with concern. However, Tang San, gravely injured from the earlier beatdown, only glimpsed her dirty yet worried face before slipping into unconsciousness.
"He's out cold, huh?"
The girl, Biluo, frowned in frustration. This wasn't quite going according to her "script." If he had stayed conscious, she'd have left a stronger impression, and they could have bonded over their shared hatred for Spirit Hall. Still, she reassured herself that once her master returned, the plan would unfold smoothly.
Not long after, Lin Yu and Liu Erlong returned, victorious from their battle in the Hell Slaughter Arena, marking their second consecutive win. Spotting Yu Xiaogang and Tang San slumped against a wall, with the mysterious green-robed girl seated nearby, Liu Erlong's eyes widened in alarm, and she hurried over.
"Xiaogang! Xiao San! What happened?!"
Seeing both of them in such a state, Liu Erlong's voice wavered between anger and worry.
"Are you… with them?" the green-robed girl asked, a cautious edge to her voice.
Liu Erlong whipped her head toward the girl, grabbing her arm urgently. "Who are you? What happened here?"
"Calm down, Erlong. You're scaring her," Lin Yu said gently, stepping in to release the girl's arm from Liu Erlong's grip.
Realizing her tension, Liu Erlong took a breath and softened her tone. "I'm sorry, little sister. Could you tell me what happened?"
The green-robed girl, Biluo, nodded. "I'm not sure myself. I heard fighting and came over to find these two unconscious, with a gang of dark soul masters beating them up. I knew I couldn't handle it alone, so I screamed for help, and the enforcers came. The soul masters scattered, but these two were already passed out when I got here."
Liu Erlong sighed in relief, gratitude on her face. "Thank you, little sister. I can't imagine what might have happened without you."
Biluo, clearly unaccustomed to thanks, pulled her hand away. "It was nothing. Just lending a hand."
"A hand?" Liu Erlong mused, marveling at the girl's kindness in such a merciless place. "What's your name, little sister?"
Biluo glanced away, a shy smile creeping onto her face. "I'm… I'm called Biluo."
Just then, Yu Xiaogang and Tang San stirred, their faces twisting in pain as they came to.
"Aunt Erlong… you're back?" Tang San mumbled, struggling to sit up before the pain forced him back down.
"Don't move!" Biluo exclaimed, catching him before he slumped to the ground.
At that moment, Lin Yu took out the fabled Red String of Fate and secretly tied one end to Tang San and the other to Biluo. Feeling Biluo's steadying hold on him, Tang San caught sight of her face, and for the briefest moment, his heart skipped a beat.
