Chapter 4: Chapter 4
The Hunters Guild had been summoned to investigate a dungeon that had appeared in the heart of Seoul, its looming, blackened gate casting an ominous presence over the surrounding area. Despite years of experience, Taejin felt a flicker of unease as he stood among his guildmates in the staging area, a few blocks from the gate.
The area was abuzz with activity. Guild staff coordinated logistics, loading magical supplies and potions into enchanted containers while hunters double-checked their gear. Conversations were lively but edged with tension; the gate had been classified as S-rank, with no prior intel about what lay within.
Taejin adjusted the straps on his dual katana harness, ensuring Murasame and Muramasa were within easy reach. Around him, his guildmates were equally meticulous in their preparations. Cha Hae-In's golden aura flared faintly as she meditated, her sword resting across her lap. Beside her, Choi Jong-In, the "Fire King," warmed up by conjuring small, controlled flames in his palms, the heat palpable even from a distance.
Baek Yoon-Ho, the "White Tiger," stretched his massive frame, his sharp claws extending and retracting with a metallic rasp. He caught Taejin's eye and grinned.
"You ready for this, Taejin? Looks like we're walking straight into hell."
Taejin smirked back, his tone light but determined. "Wouldn't miss it. Someone has to keep you in check."
The gate itself was a swirling mass of darkness, jagged edges flickering with an eerie, blue-black light. Its sheer size dwarfed the surrounding buildings, a testament to the danger within. As the Hunters Guild approached, the air grew colder, the unnatural chill seeping into their bones.
Guildmaster Go Gun-Hee stood at the forefront, his presence commanding and reassuring. "This dungeon will test us," he said, his deep voice cutting through the murmurs. "Stick to the plan. Watch each other's backs. We're the best for a reason—let's prove it."
With that, the hunters entered the gate in groups, Taejin among the first.
The transition was jarring. One moment, Taejin felt the city's cold winter breeze; the next, he was enveloped in oppressive heat and darkness. The dungeon's interior resembled a desolate wasteland, with jagged black rock formations jutting out like twisted spires. The ground was cracked and uneven, glowing faintly with crimson veins of molten energy that pulsed like a heartbeat.
The air was thick and heavy, carrying a faint metallic tang that stung the senses. Shadows flickered unnaturally, their movements unbound by the dim light from the lava-like veins.
The raid team moved cautiously, their formation tight. It wasn't long before the dungeon's inhabitants made their presence known. A swarm of shadowy beasts with glowing red eyes emerged from the fissures in the ground, their forms shifting and warping as they charged.
Taejin drew Murasame in one fluid motion, its blade gleaming faintly as it cut through the oppressive darkness. Beside him, Cha Hae-In and Baek Yoon-Ho leapt into action.
"Formation Epsilon! Keep them from flanking!" Choi Jong-In's voice boomed as he unleashed a wave of fire, incinerating several beasts instantly.
Taejin moved with calculated precision, his sword flashing as he cleaved through the creatures. Each strike was deliberate, his Critical Eye identifying weak points with uncanny accuracy. His Sword Ki enhanced his blade, slicing through even the densest parts of the beasts' shadowy forms.
Cha Hae-In danced through the chaos, her movements a blur of golden light as she dispatched enemies with surgical efficiency. Baek Yoon-Ho, meanwhile, tore through the horde with raw power, his claws ripping apart anything in his path.
The battle raged for hours, but the hunters held their ground, their teamwork honed to perfection.
The deeper they went, the more oppressive the dungeon became. The heat intensified, and the air grew heavier, making it harder to breathe. The crimson veins in the ground pulsed faster, as though the dungeon itself was alive and aware of their presence.
As they reached the next chamber, the team paused. The space was massive, its ceiling stretching so high it disappeared into darkness. Towering statues lined the walls, their forms grotesque and alien, their hollow eyes seeming to watch the intruders.
"This is too quiet," Taejin muttered, his eyes scanning the room.
No sooner had the words left his mouth than the statues began to move. With a deafening roar, they came to life, their stone forms shedding fragments as they advanced. Each statue was easily three times the size of a man, wielding enormous weapons that glowed with dark energy.
The hunters sprang into action once more. Taejin darted forward, his Accelerate skill propelling him past one of the statues' massive strikes. His katana glowed with Sword Ki as he aimed for the joints of the colossal creature, his strikes precise and relentless.
Cha Hae-In and Choi Jong-In worked in tandem, her speed and precision complementing his overwhelming firepower. Baek Yoon-Ho took on two statues at once, his monstrous strength allowing him to hold his own.
Taejin's focus was absolute, but a nagging feeling of unease crept into his mind. These enemies were powerful, but they felt like something more than just dungeon mobs—they felt like guards, placed here to delay them.
As the last statue crumbled under the combined might of the guild, a deep, guttural laugh echoed through the chamber.
From the darkness ahead, a figure emerged. It was massive, standing nearly twice as tall as Baek Yoon-Ho. Its body was a grotesque amalgamation of shadow and molten rock, its limbs unnaturally long and ending in jagged claws. Two glowing eyes burned like twin suns in its featureless face, and a crown of blackened spikes adorned its head.
The boss raised an enormous, blackened blade that seemed to absorb the light around it, the air around the weapon distorting with raw energy. Its voice was a deep, resonant growl, each word reverberating through the chamber.
"Intruders… your strength is admirable, but it will not save you. This is my domain."
The Hunters Guild braced themselves as the towering boss advanced, its molten form radiating oppressive heat. The creature's massive sword scraped against the ground, sending sparks flying. Its guttural laugh echoed through the chamber as it spoke again, each word dripping with contempt.
"Very well… entertain me before I extinguish your pathetic flames."
The boss lunged forward with shocking speed, its colossal sword crashing down toward the hunters. The impact created a shockwave that cracked the ground and sent molten fragments flying. Taejin, Cha Hae-In, and Baek Yoon-Ho dodged in unison, their movements honed from countless battles.
"It's fast!" Baek Yoon-Ho growled, his claws extending as he charged. "Keep it busy while we figure out its weaknesses!"
The boss swung its sword in a wide arc, forcing Baek Yoon-Ho to leap back. Taejin seized the opening, activating Accelerate to close the distance. His katana, Murasame, gleamed with Sword Ki as he aimed for the creature's torso.
The blade struck true but skidded off the boss's molten exterior, leaving only a faint mark. Taejin gritted his teeth and leaped back as the creature's arm lashed out like a whip, narrowly missing him.
"Its body's like armor," Taejin muttered. "Hae-In, aim for the joints!"
Cha Hae-In dashed forward, her golden aura flaring as she struck at the boss's knee with her blade. Sparks flew as her sword bit into the joint, forcing the creature to stagger. Choi Jong-In followed up with a torrent of flames, engulfing the boss in a fiery inferno.
The creature roared, its molten form absorbing the flames before retaliating with a burst of dark energy that sent Jong-In skidding backward.
"It's absorbing magic!" Jong-In shouted, his voice strained. "Physical attacks might be our only option."
Baek Yoon-Ho snarled and leaped onto the boss's back, his claws digging into its molten flesh. The creature roared in fury, thrashing wildly to shake him off. Meanwhile, Taejin darted in and out of its reach, landing precise strikes on its joints and weak points.
"We're chipping it down," Taejin called out, his breathing steady despite the intensity of the fight.
The boss slammed its sword into the ground, releasing a shockwave of molten energy that sent the hunters flying. Taejin landed in a roll, his instincts screaming at him to move as the creature charged him.
He raised Murasame to parry, the force of the impact jarring his arms. Before he could counter, the boss's free hand lashed out, forcing him to retreat.
Cha Hae-In and Baek Yoon-Ho re-engaged, their combined speed and strength forcing the creature to divide its attention. But the boss adapted quickly, swinging its sword with calculated precision.
A sharp clang echoed as the blade struck Baek Yoon-Ho, sending him crashing into a nearby rock formation. He groaned but quickly got to his feet, his expression fierce.
"This thing's no ordinary boss," he muttered, wiping blood from his lip.
The hunters began to coordinate more effectively, their attacks flowing seamlessly. Taejin and Cha Hae-In struck from opposite sides, their blades finding small openings in the boss's defenses. Jong-In provided support with controlled bursts of fire, forcing the creature to constantly adjust its movements.
Baek Yoon-Ho lunged at the creature's leg, his claws rending deep gashes in the molten armor. The boss roared in frustration, its glowing eyes narrowing as it assessed its opponents.
"You are persistent… but this ends now," it growled.
The boss slammed its sword into the ground once more, but this time the effect was different. The chamber shuddered as massive walls of molten rock erupted from the ground, cutting the hunters off from one another.
Taejin found himself isolated, the glowing barriers blocking his view of his guildmates. He heard Baek Yoon-Ho's roar of frustration and Cha Hae-In's voice calling out orders, but the sound was muffled.
Before he could react, the boss emerged from the shadows, its molten form towering over him.
"One by one, you will fall," it said, its voice dripping with malice.
Taejin tightened his grip on Murasame, his heart pounding but his resolve unshaken.
"If it's a duel you want," he said, his voice steady, "then let's make it one to remember."
