Ch. 133
Chapter 133: Messenger Summoning
Janna, whose consciousness had returned to her body in the Material Plane, opened her eyes with a hint of fatigue.
"This is what it feels like to comprehend a law—"
Rubbing her throbbing temples, Janna felt a persistent dizziness in her head.
"The objective manifestation of a law is composed of tens of thousands of mystical characters. Not only must one maintain extreme focus throughout the observation process, but one must also synchronize and sort the disordered characters according to the patterns of the Law of Purification—comprehending a law is truly an immense and arduous endeavor—."
[Today's Quest: Comprehend the Law of Purification (Completed);
Quest Reward: 100 Talent EXP, 500 Skill EXP, Comprehension +0.1]
After applying the Talent EXP to her Plant Affinity talent, Janna looked at the random reward for this quest.
"A reward of Comprehension this time—not bad at all."
Through her observations, Janna concluded that increasing the Comprehension attribute significantly enhanced her ability to study mystical disciplines and other idealistic knowledge.
Just like Transfiguration or Law Comprehension, both were closely tied to the Comprehension attribute.
"Tick tock tick tock—"
Glancing at the clock on the wall, Janna noted the time.
Due to the one-to-one time ratio between the Material Plane and the Holy Realm of Heaven, only fifteen minutes had passed.
Still mentally exhausted, Janna had to terminate her spirit form and return to her physical body.
"Thankfully, Spirit Phase Travel can be performed simultaneously with meditation—though it's only shallow meditation, it's still beneficial."
Janna believed that with enough dedication, iron could indeed be ground into a needle.
As she became more accustomed to multitasking, Janna was confident that eventually, she would be able to enter a Deep Meditation state while using her Wizard Talents.
"Caw—caw—"
Hearing the familiar caws of the Rook outside, Janna glanced at the time again, then closed her eyes and reentered a meditative state.
After a full night of Deep Meditation on Saturday, the fatigue from comprehending the Law of Purification completely dissipated.
Having had a simple breakfast in the dining hall and packed a few honey pancakes, Janna returned to her dormitory and resumed studying the remaining five witchcraft spells.
Janna discovered that aside from plant-type witchcraft, she was also progressing rapidly in mental control-type witchcraft.
Perhaps because her mind was clearer in the morning, it didn't take long for Janna to successfully master both Mental Charm and Soul Scream.
"Compared to plant-type witchcraft, it seems I have a higher natural aptitude for mental control-type witchcraft——"
Especially Mental Charm, when combined with Janna’s already extraordinary Charisma, could produce a charm effect far surpassing Siren Chanting, even at just the beginner level.
On this point, the Celestial Finch, who acted as her sparring partner, had the most to say.
"But Siren Chanting excels in area-of-effect attacks. No matter how strong Mental Charm's mental control is, it only affects a single target—each has its own strengths."
Aside from Mental Charm, Janna also quickly mastered Soul Scream, a soul-control spell.
Unlike Soul Lash, which was also a soul-based spell, Soul Scream belonged to the same area-of-effect category as Siren Chanting. This made up for Janna's lack of group attack abilities while in spirit form.
In the time that followed, Janna also completed her studies of two general-use witchcraft spells: Sleep Spell and Forgetfulness Spell.
Although these spells sounded simple, their witchcraft symbols were anything but.
It took nearly twice the time she spent on Mental Charm and Soul Scream for Janna to fully decode the contents of the Magic Scrolls.
"As expected, compared to self-study, I still prefer Professor Margaret’s live lectures—"
Learning witchcraft from Magic Scrolls required Janna to figure out the spell’s entire casting principle and structural model on her own.
The time spent on just that accounted for nearly four-fifths of the entire learning process.
But in classroom learning, the formal wizard would break down and spoon-feed all the difficult parts to the wizard apprentices, leaving no need for additional effort or comprehension.
That's why spells like Magic Reading and Wizard's Hand could be effortlessly cast by Janna during class, without nearly as much struggle.
"Now, only Messenger Summoning remains."
The final spell, which was also the highest credit-exchange spell among the seven, was likewise the most difficult to master.
Like Contract Summoning and Spirit Summoning, this spell required additional ritual materials.
Although the materials weren't as numerous as the other two spells, they still came with a cost.
"Using Aph as the messenger isn’t entirely out of the question—but that would feel like bullying."
Even though the Celestial Finch was deeply loyal to Janna, their contract was ultimately one of equality.
Janna could not use it as a mere laborer at her whim.
Besides, becoming a "messenger" required extremely high speed for traversal.
Given the Celestial Finch’s flight speed, it could handle short-distance messages, but for longer distances, the time cost could be measured in months.
"Alright—"
On a leftover piece of Sea Beast Hide she had purchased earlier, Janna finished inscribing the array and then placed a lit Spiritual Candle at its center.
"Traveler wandering across the countless Planes, friendly creatures of the Spirit Realm who may be summoned, I, Janna Roland, summon you—"
Screech!
At the very instant Janna completed the summoning chant in Mykethan, a Spiritual Wind suddenly swirled inside the dormitory, tossing her sleek black hair in all directions.
As the flame on the Spiritual Candle abruptly flared up, Janna, who maintained the ritual, could clearly sense the feeling of being watched from all around.
There was greed, kindness, scrutiny, and madness.
Sensing the emotions behind each gaze, Janna, as the summoner of the ritual, remained calm and composed, not revealing a single true emotion.
"Thump, thump, thump——"
With a rhythmic pounding in her ears, the feeling of being watched quickly vanished.
In the rapidly expanding pale flame, a pitch-black shadow slowly emerged from the void.
As the wax dripped rapidly, Janna, standing before the ritual, finally saw the true form of the messenger she had summoned.
A tall black top hat, a slightly worn black tailcoat, and a gold-rimmed monocle—if not for the constantly bouncing wooden stick that served as its lower body, Janna would have thought she summoned a human noble.
"A—scarecrow?"
Beneath the wide brim of the hat was a rather silly round scarecrow head. Beneath the black tailcoat, its two "arms" extended outward in a cross shape, just like the scarecrows found in fields.
Judging from its appearance alone, it didn’t look like the type to deliver messages quickly...
