Chapter 420: Mount Everest Base
At the entrance to the base, there was a queue for inspection, with the military having their own entrance and check. The base populace like them entered through the main entrance after registration and identity checks.
They lined up at the very end. It wasn't long before Lu Jianshe came over, greeted Gu Pan and the others, and then led Gu Ci's group away. They required special clearance in a designated area before being granted entry.
Gu Pan's group consisted entirely of No.7 Base residents, and also Lu Ruisheng's family information registered him as Base Chief Lu, which expedited their verification process and allowed them to enter Mount Everest Base alongside the group.
This place bore some resemblance to the former main base, but the residential area was smaller, as there weren't many who came to Mount Everest Base. Most of those who made it here had some skills; very few were admitted on a ticket basis. More common were military personnel and scientific researchers.
Upon entry, guides led them to carry out the formalities, starting with obtaining their ID cards. Identity documents at Mount Everest were very strict and detailed. For those with severe illnesses, even their ailments were listed, which facilitated better management.
After securing their identity information, they proceeded to the finance center and received a small pack of dry food and thirty contribution points, which were initial funds. From then on, they needed to find work to earn money and exchange for contribution points to purchase supplies.
Lastly, they went to collect keys. The houses here didn't require renting; all were uniformly distributed, and each was a unit in an apartment building equipped with all the basic tools necessary for living.
All in all, life at Mount Everest Base was very humane.
The people in Gu Pan's group were all placed next to each other, resulting in adjacent allocated houses.
They lived on the third floor, where each story housed eight families in two-bedroom apartments, which were somewhat better than those at No.7 Base.
Upon reaching the upper floors, they found the environment quite pleasant. Everyone was satisfied with their south-facing rooms.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng chose a room at the eastern end on the top. They appreciated peace and preferred to be against one wall rather than sandwiched in the middle.
Feng Zhekai and Lu Xuerong lived next to Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng, followed by Chen Shaonan's family, then Guo Gang, with Cheng Yang and Fang Lanlan at the end.
Once everything was settled, there was no rush to buy food as they had brought their own supplies. Heading out to shop at that time would certainly have been crowded, so they decided to avoid the rush hour.
The sudden tranquility and the spotless environment felt a bit surreal.
The sun shone brightly outside, and the sky was clear. The trees planted within the base seemed to be thriving well.
Peering through the window, one could see the refuge facilities lining the street, along with many disaster response structures, which added a touch of science fiction to the scene.
Gu Pan, with camera in hand, captured these scenes, composing the first diary entry since arriving at Mount Everest Base.
In the evening, Gu Pan organized a communal dinner, and she mentioned that the food was found on the cruise ship. No one inquired further; they all understood.
After dinner, the base broadcast began to sound: "Residents of Mount Everest Base, residents of Mount Everest Base, hello and welcome to the last batch of residents settling into Mount Everest Base. On behalf of all the staff, I extend a warm welcome. Next, I will announce the rules of Mount Everest Base, hoping the new residents will quickly adapt to life here."
The broadcast continued with some rules for the base, where electricity was provided for two hours each day starting after dark, with an automatic cutoff after two hours, and water was supplied similarly for two hours.
Every month, residents were required to register with their building leader, noting their mental and physical condition. This preventive measure was to avoid harm from those who might have unstable mental conditions and to ensure that any unwell individuals living alone wouldn't go unnoticed in the event of death.
Next came the employment opportunities—self-employment was no longer an option. If anyone wanted to eat well, they had to go out and work.
Hearing this rule, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng had a bit of a headache. They didn't want to work but also knew it would be strange if they could eat without working. So, they planned to find a job where they could work together without too much strain.
At that moment, Guo Gang's voice came over the intercom, "Does anyone have any particular job in mind?"
Chen Lang said, "I don't have any special skills, and I can't do heavy labor. What can I do?"
Lu Xuerong spoke up, "I'd still like to work in a tailor shop. I wonder if they allow self-employment here."
That remark about self-employment gave Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng some ideas.
Lu Ruisheng said, "Let's not rush. When we have time, we'll make inquiries. If self-employment is allowed, we'll think about what we can do. Not everyone is suited for regular jobs."
Everyone agreed with this since Chen Lang was disabled, Meng Meng was very young, Guo Gang was from a military background and the base had no shortage of soldiers, and Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng used to run a decoration company without a related position available—should they too go out and earn their bread with physical labor?
Gu Pan thought about the items in the Space, which at that moment were uncertain in terms of their usefulness. So they decided to hold off on any decisions until they had assessed the resources in the Space.
Therefore, she shared the same thought as Lu Ruisheng, to first wait and see the situation since they were not in a rush.
After setting the intercom aside, Gu Pan pulled Lu Ruisheng into the Space to ascertain just how much they had there, a matter they had slightly neglected before.
The Space was somewhat disorganized, as they had taken the cruise ship out and then replaced it, shifting the items around.
Additionally, since they had obtained a great deal of supplies from the military and from Gu Ci, there was hardly any space left to walk.
They also took the opportunity to assess what was inside the military's vehicles, with the intention of organizing and exploring the possibility of starting a private venture, such as a small factory, employing some people to work for them. This way, they could generate income and justify a more leisurely lifestyle.
Of course, they would need to come up with several ideas and create multiple plans to convincingly propose to the base authorities.
They also had to wait, as their father and Second Uncle had just arrived. It was best to let them settle in before discussing the matter.
After all, there was no shortage of food and necessities for them, allowing them to spend some time researching.
Looking at the cluttered Space, both laughed at the sight; they truly were well-provided for.
Fortunately, Gu Pan could control objects in the Space with her thoughts. She began by stacking space-originated food supplies as high as possible to save some room.
The same was done with other life essentials, which were neatly arranged on shelves.
Their belongings were quickly organized and, after repacking, were even tidier than before.
Next, they began relocating machinery and equipment into the cruise ship. The cruise ship's gangways and lobby were spacious enough to accommodate a lot, which they did, arranging to relocate and restack them properly later.
Soon, they reached Gu Ci's belongings—five heavy trucks filled with gasoline, building materials and tools, soil, and indoor planting lights.
There were many damp spots around these trucks, as they had been pulled out of water by Gu Pan. Although these items had only been submerged a short time, some water had seeped inside.
However, the issue wasn't serious. The Space had the capability to completely preserve freshness, so even waterlogged supplies could remain just as they were when they entered the water, preventing them from deterioration.
