Sam looks at his status. As you can see he was not able to improve himself other than improving the level of his techniques. He was still an intermediate planetary grade Warrior.

Fortunately, he was able to increase the level of his techniques. Some of them have already become SSS-grade techniques. This is really going to help him during the battle against those Abyss humans.

For current Sam defeating the previous him when he came back to Eden Blue is not difficult. You would be able to do that even without using the power of domain or bloodline skills.

Another hand if you are thinking why he did not absorb the body of that prime dragon, then it is because of the restriction of his planet.

Before anything you should know he was able to discover the body of that monster. It was present in outer space. Fortunately, Sam was able to recover that prime dragon.

He decided after going back to Terraria, before anything he would increase his power. If possible he will try to reach the limit of intermediate planetary grade.
