Chapter 57: Chapter 57: Dragonstone Dock
Wright closed his eyes and focused on the magical fluctuations when Arvak materialized.
Aside from the eerie aura of death, he felt nothing else. Could it be that the high-magic world of Soul Cairn was connected to this World, causing magic to seep through? And between the red comet and the birth of dragons, who came first?
Wright couldn't make sense of it for the moment. Just then, a handsome young man with bright golden hair walked in and bowed to Wright.
"Lord Wright, a letter from King's Landing."
Wright took the letter from his hand. "Thank you, Lord Monford. This is a map of the underground obsidian veins on Dragonstone Island. Please store it in the study and inform Stannis when he returns to ensure it is well kept."
"Understood, Lord Wright. I will take my leave now." The young man bowed again and exited.
"Is he Lord Monford Velaryon of Driftmark Island?" Ashara asked after the young man had left.
"Yes, he is."
"But..."
"You're wondering why he's so servile?" Wright interjected.
"Mm!" Ashara nodded.
Wright explained further, "His House was once very rich and powerful. House Velaryon came from the Valyria, and during the early Targaryen dynasty, they almost monopolized the position of Master of Ships. Their wealth was built through sea trade, and they even had dragons. But wealth does not last forever. Over a hundred years ago, during the Dance of the Dragons, they lost everything. After a battle called the Battle of the Gullet, their house was raided by enemies, and their power was never fully restored.
When my brother Robert rebelled, House Velaryon was on the losing side. Now, the family has very few members left. To maintain the title of Lord of Driftmark, they now serve under my second brother, Stannis, having lost their former glory of commanding the sea."
Ashara remarked, "I see. So the Battle of the Gullet was that important?"
Wright nodded. "Back then, a Targaryen prince was captured, and five Dragonriders were sent to fight against ninety warships. As a result, one prince and one dragon died, and the prince couldn't be rescued. The remaining fleet raided and burned Driftmark spice town, as well as the Velaryon stronghold, High Tide. In one night, centuries of their house's wealth were lost."
"Hopefully, Lord Monford can restore his family's fortunes. I'll go find Robb now." Ashara also felt sympathy for the misfortune of House Velaryon.
Wright: "As long as he's loyal enough to Stannis, it's not impossible for his family to rise again."

A few days later, the ship from Renly had arrived at Dragonstone's dock, but many others had come along.
There were many gold-robed men patrolling the dock. Given the size of this world and its level of seafaring, a journey to the East Continent, with travel included, could take years. Many had arrived—for one, to meet the new apprentices, and for another, to see Wright off.
Ashara Dayne's journey to the North was over, along with Leaf, Robb Stark, and Jon Snow, as well as Jojen Reed from White Harbor, who had joined them. They were all headed back to the school to receive further instruction under Acting Headmaster Renly.
To ensure the safety of Ashara,
Leaf, Jojen, Robb, and Jon, Wright sent a raven to Renly, asking him to meet them at the dock. As Acting Headmaster, it made sense for Renly to meet the school's four students. Leaf was technically there for an exchange of knowledge and experience.
Wright had also written down many new magical techniques suited to their respective talents, to address their limited magical power and the need for magic that could integrate with close combat.
The people from the magic school — Qyburn, Malora Hightower, and Thoros — had all come to see him off. Wright gave them instructions on school matters and also left them with personal study plans to be overseen by Renly.
Although all three were older than Wright, they had learned magic from him and Renly, maintaining a teacher-and-friend relationship with both.
Nymeria, Tyene and Princess Shireen were together. Tyene had embroidered a small flower on the bear's head, and Shireen, who had initially been displeased to see the toy bear in Tyene's hands (the one Shireen had given to Wright), quickly warmed to Tyene when she was given an alchemically hardened flower.
Nymeria smiled and looked at Wright from the side, her meaning clear — she was three years older than him, almost twenty now, and she wanted a child. The customs of early marriage and childbirth in Westeros were too much for Wright to accept. He still hadn't had enough of life — he wasn't ready for a child. He could only pretend not to notice and continue talking to Robert.
Robert, Stannis, Renly, and Wright, the four brothers, were saying their goodbyes.
"Make some friends over there, and work on your drinking skills," Robert clapped Wright on the shoulder, giving his advice.
"Forget it, I don't like the feeling of being drunk. A mage should always stay sober. By the way, is the new queen confirmed yet? You've lost some weight lately?" Wright asked, looking at Robert's stomach.
Robert's large belly had shrunk considerably. "Why are you concerned about that? I'm doing just fine lately. I don't plan on naming a queen yet, but I've already narrowed down a few candidates. I'll announce it in due time. But, yes, I've been overworking and have lost some weight, alas."
Wright grinned. "You're complaining about being tired? I've heard some things in the North, haha. Anyway, forget about that. When I was heading north, I made some arrangements in Winterfell. The Greyjoy siblings will head to the East Continent and infiltrate the descendants of House Targaryen as spies."
Robert, Stannis, and Renly thought for a while before recalling that there were two Greyjoy children being fostered by Ned Stark.
Robert: "Their background seems reasonable, but do you think those two can manage it?"
Wright: "Not yet. I've arranged for Ned to train them for a few more years. When the time comes, you can arrange for them to defect. It has to look convincing."
"Not a problem. I'll talk to Ned again, get those siblings to learn some seamanship. Don't want them dying at sea," Robert added.
Stannis considered a possibility: "What if, after all this time, they really swear loyalty to House Targaryen?"
Wright: "Then we kill them along with the Targaryens. Keeping them in the North is too much of an unstable factor. We'll send them east and see what they do. By the way, they've already come up with a new family crest after they make their mark: a mermaid, a female one — very attractive."
"If they do well over there, Targaryen might let the mermaid banner fly first. It all depends on whether they can resist temptation. If it works out, I'll reward them with the honors they deserve."
Robert's reign was actually quite unstable. Wright and Renly had temporarily stabilized the South through economics and marriage alliances, and in the North and Vale, with Ned and Robert's foster father around, there wasn't much of a problem for now. However, the Westerlands were completely alienated, the Riverlands and Crownlands had many who wanted to restore the Targaryens, and Dorne had never truly submitted to the Iron Throne for a hundred years.
Robert knew very well that his rule as king was shaky, but lacking sophisticated political strategies, he could only attempt to win over these nobles with his drunken ways.
Stannis: "The Royal Fleet has agents in Pentos and Myr. I've already told them — if you need anything, you can call on them. The Master of Whisperers, Varys, also promised to provide you with intelligence."
"Thank you!" Wright gave both of his older brothers a hug.
Turning to Renly, he said:
"How is it that you're not even twenty and you've already started growing a beard?"
Renly, stroking his beard with satisfaction, replied, "Doesn't it make me look more mature? It's more convenient when negotiating business with people."
