Siblings with No Life Get Summoned to Another World as Detectives

Chapter 35: Beginning of War

He tapped the bottom a few times, listening to the echo that revealed its secret. The sound was different from the rest of the chest — empty and hollow. "False bottom…" he thought, feeling a chill run down his spine.

Without hesitation, he slammed his fist onto the bottom. The wood cracked with a short, squeaky sound, and part of the bottom broke away under his hands.

Beneath it… was something Kai could never have imagined. It was a diary.

Kai looked at the diary in his hands and paused for a moment. "Is this the diary we're looking for?" he thought, as an idea of how to use the situation spun through his mind. Slowly, he lifted his gaze toward his sister, trying to hide the excitement simmering just beneath the surface.

"Mei—" he began, but stopped at the last moment, as a clever, slightly sly idea popped into his head. Without hesitation, he slipped the diary into the inner pocket of his shirt and pretended to keep searching.

Mei turned and looked at her brother. "Yes…?" she asked, tilting her head. "Did you find something?"

Kai frowned and shook his head, trying to look completely innocent. "No…" he lied.

His sister just shrugged and continued her search, completely trusting his words.

"I want to see how this war plays out, then I'll get back at Mei. After that, I'll hand the diary over to Vorenhart…" Kai thought to himself, rifling through the things.

Hours passed slowly, sunlight fading as shadows stretched across the room. Time pressed down on the space, and they continued to sift through things aimlessly. Except for the diary, which Kai had carefully hidden, they found nothing.

"Let's go home…" Mei said, kicking things off the floor to clear a path. Her words carried a trace of frustration, and Kai could almost feel the satisfaction of being the one controlling the situation.

"Alright…" Kai agreed, following her closely, though his mind was spinning with a hundred plans.

In the massive room, behind a table carved from black stone, Nytherra sat, leaning against a throne made of bones. Her cold, calculating eyes scanned the assembled gods, while the silence in the room pressed almost tangibly.

Another meeting of the gods was taking place, yet one god was, as usual, absent, leaving the last chair empty.

"My people have started plotting the occupation of the Empire," said Elmyra, Goddess of Elves, her voice carrying more gravity than her small frame suggested. She stood on the chair to be seen, pointing directly at Feloria, Goddess of the Neko kind. "You're finished!" she exclaimed, her tone balancing between serious threat and arrogance.

"Oh my… Are you threatening us?" Feloria replied, the bell on her choker jingling softly with each tilt of her head, adding an almost seductive note to her voice.

Elmyra gave a brief, confident nod. "Of course I'm threatening you. Elves are the superior race," she said, proudly lifting her chin.

Rhazir, God of Bloodbeasts, sat calmly across from her, eyes sparkling with amusement as he watched the small, slightly aggressive Elmyra. "Superior? You're child-height!" he said, his voice dripping with mockery.

Elmyra immediately started yelling, fists clenched at her hips. "So what? I am Goddess Elmyra! The holy representative of the Elves!" she shouted, trying to assert herself with confidence.

Nytherra raised an eyebrow and briefly widened her eyes at the shouting, her face twisting into an expression of disgust and disdain. Without a word, she created a gun from thin air and pointed it coldly at Elmyra. The bullet flew and hit Elmyra squarely in the forehead.

Elmyra's head jerked back, then quickly returned to normal as the hole the bullet made in her skin miraculously began to heal. Silence filled the room, all eyes on the small Elf Goddess. After a few seconds of quiet, Elmyra quietly muttered: "Sorry…"

"Now… be quiet," Nytherra said softly but authoritatively, and everyone in the room immediately ceased their conversations. Her presence filled the space. Slowly, she lifted her nose, sniffing the air like some kind of dog, every slight movement of her head almost hypnotic.

"The diary…" she whispered. Everyone turned toward her at once, eyes wide, every passing moment amplifying the tension in the room.

Nytherra's gaze grew more intense, her eyes glittering with satisfaction. "I feel the diary!" she now called out louder. Her body tensed slightly, as if reacting to an invisible energy drawn toward the diary. Her dress tightened gently across her chest as she leaned forward, her hair sliding over her shoulders and brushing her neck.

She wrapped her arms around herself, then let out a loud moan. "Ah! That sweet scent of the diary!"

"At… the brother and sister's!" she added at last, her voice dark now, the smile on her face satisfied, almost terrifying.

The brother and sister finally arrived at the White House, exhausted from the long journey. They entered their room; the door creaked as they closed it, then collapsed onto the bed, feeling relief.

"Tired…" Mei said softly, almost whispering to herself. She closed her eyes for a moment.

Kai didn't respond. His mind was busy, swirling with plans. He was just waiting for the right moment to be alone. "Come on, come on… You drank so much, you probably need the bathroom," he thought, trying to stay calm and not show a hint of excitement.

And as if foreseeing the future, his sister rose and slowly headed to the bathroom.

"There!" Kai thought, his heart beating a little faster. This was the moment… the moment to hide the diary, too risky to carry with him. His eyes scanned the room, every corner and surface a potential hiding spot. "Where to hide the diary? Where?" his thoughts spun as he slowly evaluated options, knowing even the slightest mistake could reveal his secret.

His eyes moved across the room as he searched for the perfect hiding spot. For his plan to succeed, neither his sister nor Lily could know where it was.

Failing to find the perfect spot, he quickly decided to look for some spell in the manual. He flipped pages fast, then paused.

"How does this magic even work…? Better read the introduction properly…" he continued flipping, then found a spell he could use.

He placed his hand on the diary. "Invisible…" he whispered, and the diary became invisible. "What if…?" he wondered, then placed his hand on his chest and whispered again: "invisible…"

But nothing happened. "Well… I didn't expect it to have no limits…" he said, then went to the chair, got on all fours, slid it underneath, and quickly returned to his bed.

Mei slightly cracked the bathroom door. "I'm going to bathe…" she said.

"Alright!" Kai replied, giving a thumbs-up, a small satisfied smile appearing on his face. He quickly grabbed a book he had started a few days ago and opened it to the page he had left off. His gaze stayed on the words, though his thoughts occasionally drifted to the diary.

Mei nudged the door further, indicating she was moving toward the bathroom. "Here I go…" she said, her voice soft.

"Have fun!" he replied, relaxed.

His sister now opened the door just enough to peek her eye through. "I'm going…" she murmured.

He didn't answer, nor did he look up, continuing to read.

Mei slowly closed the bathroom door, barefoot, her cold feet cooling on the tiles. The room's silence was nearly tangible, broken only by the soft rustle of the towel as she prepared it. She began undressing slowly, then wrapped the towel around herself.

She waited a moment, then curiously peeked through the keyhole. Her eyes immediately caught Kai, lying on the bed, motionless except for slight movements turning the book pages.

"You're not going to watch me bathe???" she thought, with a small smile. She opened the door just enough to be seen through it.

"You're not going to peek through the keyhole?" she asked, voice carrying a hint of anger.

"Huh? Of course not!" Kai exclaimed sincerely, lifting his eyes above the book cover to look at her.

Mei returned to the bathroom and slammed the door. "Dummy!"

Kai woke up and immediately jumped out of bed, heading to the bathroom with a single mission: quickly brush his teeth before his sister could snatch his toothbrush and run around the White House with it again.

He dressed quickly for school, then sat on his bed, trying to catch a moment of calm and order in his morning chaos. His thoughts already swirled around the day ahead as the first morning light streamed through the window.

Mei slowly woke up, dreamily rubbed her eyes, and whispered: "Good morning…" Her words were still sleepy, but it didn't stop her from getting out of bed. She walked slowly to the bathroom and began brushing her teeth.

Through the doorway, she glanced at her brother, already immersed in the pages of some book, completely absorbed.

Mei pulled the toothbrush from her mouth, foam around her lips. "What kind of book is that?" she asked, curious.

"Irontusk…" Kai muttered, eyes still glued to the page, his brain trying to read and speak at the same time.

Mei just nodded, with a small smile, then returned to the bathroom. "I'm going to change…" she said, voice deliberately drawing attention.

A few minutes passed, the room silent… until her voice came from the bathroom: "Kai!" she called.

"Yes!" Kai shouted back, moving his eyes from the book to the bathroom door.

"Bring me the comb!" she shouted, lightly tapping the door with her hand.

"Yeah, yeah!" he said, putting the book down on the bed. He quickly walked to the nightstand, grabbed her comb, and headed back to the bathroom door.

"Mei!" he called, lightly knocking three times, a small smile on his face.

"Come in!" she shouted back, and he could hear her stepping back. Kai opened the door, and his smile instantly vanished.

Mei stood in the middle of the bathroom, completely uncovered — the only thing she held was a shirt clutched tightly in both hands. The cloth barely hid her chest and lower body, while her shoulders, legs, and hips remained fully exposed.

"Ah… pervert!" she shouted, raising her voice enough to sting his ears. Yet there was not an ounce of true anger in her tone. It wasn't a scream of embarrassment, but a challenge — she was teasing him.

Kai stood by the door, arms crossed over his chest, tilting his head. A lazy smirk appeared on his face. "Shut up. You're flat anyway."

"I'm not!" she retorted immediately, hugging the shirt tighter to her body.

He just smiled and tossed her the comb. "Catch," he muttered, then slammed the door behind him without blinking.

He lay back on his bed, opened the book as if nothing had happened, and continued reading.

Of course, the book was a super-duper-mega-epochal-surreal-fantastic-invincible-top-divine masterpiece and TOTALLY not just a promotion for my new project. It's called Irontusk, and I'll start working on it after finishing this web novel, but I can't give away details.

BOOM!

Suddenly, an explosion echoed outside, ripping the silence like lightning piercing even the heavens. The air trembled from the blast, carrying the smell of burning metal and undefinable fear.

Kai ran to the window and froze. A monstrous flying machine hovered a few miles from the White House. It was enormous — so enormous that its round body disappeared into the clouds, its shadow covering half the plaza. Gears and pipes twisted over it without reason, yet compelling in their absurdity. The machine floated several meters above the ground, but that was enough to carry debris and dust, shaking even the rooftops of nearby houses. The screeching and rumbling came from its inner mechanical depths, as if it were breathing… or planning to destroy everything in its path.

"O… M… G," Kai muttered slowly, jaw dropping.
