Chapter 28: RIP Frieren
While Kai and Mei languished in the dark, damp cell, silence cloaked the White House in sorrow. Vorenhart and Lily stood over the void left by Frieren, each trapped in their own thoughts and pain.
"Wh-why did you have to leave us?" Lily asked, her voice breaking as she spoke the words, almost choking on her own tears. Her eyes were red from crying, tears sliding down her cheeks. "You did so much for this world… saved so many lives… Why… now of all times?"
Vorenhart stood behind her, motionless, yet the tension around him was palpable. His hand rested on her shoulder, not in comfort but instinctively, as if seeking stability while his thoughts raged. His eyes were not filled with sorrow—they were sharp, enigmatic, laden with frustration and anger at something he could not change.
Every moment of silence between them amplified his irritation; every breath reminded him that Frieren had withheld the most important information—where the diary was.
Lily lifted her gaze to him, struggling to control her voice. "Sh-should we… give him a grave?" she asked quietly, almost in a whisper. Her worry did not touch Vorenhart.
Vorenhart's eyes remained fixed in the distance, sharp and cold, focused on an invisible point that symbolized all he could not know. He did not speak a word, for none could ease the irritation consuming him. After a few moments, he merely nodded.
They stepped into the courtyard, where the sun was slowly sinking behind the high walls of the White House, casting golden light across the grassy grounds. Lily held a wooden cross in her hands, then slowly planted it in the ground.
"Rest in peace…" Lily whispered, arms crossed, her voice trembling with grief.
Vorenhart stood aside, hands at his sides. His face was scowling, while his mind endlessly repeated:
"He didn't tell me where the diary is…"
And as the cool evening rays slowly fell across the courtyard, Vorenhart felt the pressure of frustration mounting.

Meanwhile, in Mei's classroom at the academy.
Sunlight barely pierced the tall windows, casting thin streaks across rows of chairs and students sitting rigidly, some with books still open before them, others staring blankly, clearly lost in their own thoughts.
The classroom door suddenly opened, and the professor entered—a tall, serious man with glasses that shimmered gently in the light streaming in from outside.
"Good day, everyone!" he said, then paused at the podium, lifting his gaze to the students.
His voice was calm, yet carried an unusual gravity. "I have sad news… Kitsuna Aika, a student of this class, has been declared missing. If you have any information about her whereabouts, please report it to me immediately."
After his words, silence fell first, heavy and tense, then whispers and anxious glances began to circulate among the students.
"What…?" someone whispered, voice full of disbelief.
"How?!" another shouted, unable to hide their shock.
"Did something happen to her?" one girl asked, eyes wide with fear.
"When was the last time you saw her?" asked a third.
As some students speculated about what might have happened, others, in quiet moments of prayer, nodded and softly invoked the name of the almighty Goddess Nytherra, asking her to watch over and protect the lost soul of Kitsuna Aika.
"Oh, Nytherra, Mistress of Night and Silence,
hear the voice of my heart.
As darkness embraces light,
so do you embrace the souls that depart.
Please, take this soul under your wing.
Wash away its pain,
shield it from oblivion,
guide it through shadow into your eternal peace.
If it has fallen – lift it.
If it has strayed – direct it.
If it has suffered – console it.
Nytherra, guardian of the eternal slumber,
into your hands I lay this soul.
May it find rest in your endless night.
Nitra!"

News of Kitsuna Aika's disappearance quickly spread through the halls of the academy, sending waves of shock and anxiety among the students, soon reaching Kai's classroom.
"NOOO!" Yuki screamed, tears streaming endlessly down her cheeks. Her hands trembled as she tried to wipe her face, but it was useless — her sobs filled the room. "Why??? Why, Nytherra?"
Everyone present watched her with sympathy, feeling the weight of her despair. Some approached, offering comfort, but Yuki only nodded, as if completely broken, her eyes glistening with tears and her shoulders shaking in rhythm with her sobs.
Sunlight filtered through the tall windows, gently illuminating her face, making it appear almost angelic, while her slender figure seemed more fragile and innocent than it truly was.
Yet inside, deep in her mind, Yuki thought quietly: "Perfect!" — and a smile, though hidden behind her tears, flickered faintly at the corners of her lips, concealing her true nature.

Atop a massive, ancient tree, far from the crowds and noise of the capital, sat a black figure — Kai's Shadow. Branches swayed gently in the breeze, sunlight glinting off his smooth, dark form, casting contrasts of light and shadow.
"Hehehe!" he chuckled, then leaned back on his hands. "Humans really strange creatures are… don't you think so too?" he asked thoughtfully, addressing the companion sitting beside him.
But no answer came.
The Shadow shrugged slightly.
