Chapter 164: Chapter 165: Absolutely Not!
"Fon?!"
The next moment, the curtain before Fon was suddenly pulled open, revealing Makoto's face brimming with surprise and joy.
Instinctively, Fon lowered her head slightly, avoiding his gaze. Her eyes inadvertently fell to his feet and noticed that his wooden sandals were worn on the wrong feet.
This small detail spoke volumes about her place in Makoto's heart. The mere sound of her voice had made him so flustered that he rushed out without even realizing his mistake.
Moreover, as Fon lifted her gaze back to Makoto, she found that he still hadn't noticed his sandals. His refined and gentle face showed only excitement and the joy of their reunion.
At that moment, an overwhelming wave of emotion surged in Fon's heart. Tears, which she had only just managed to stop, began to flow uncontrollably once more.
So there is someone who values me this much... Someone who doesn't see me as someone to be discarded or ignored.
Seeing her tears, Makoto grew visibly anxious and hurriedly tried to comfort her.
"What's wrong, Fon? Are you hurt?"
"Come in first—no, wait, step into the tent. Yes, inside."
"It's okay, it's okay. Whatever it is, take your time to tell me."
"If you're not ready to talk, that's fine too. I'll be here. Whenever you're ready, I'll listen patiently."
---
As Makoto's warm and soothing words continued, Fon seemed to use this moment to release all the pressure and loneliness she had endured. Before him, her usual stubborn and guarded demeanor melted away entirely.
She cried without restraint, her tears flowing like a storm, the pain in her sobs tugging at Makoto's heart.
It was understandable. After all, Fon had lost everything she had dedicated herself to, everything she had sworn to protect and live for, all in a single night. The collapse of her convictions would have broken anyone.
Makoto gently patted her back, lending her his shoulder as a safe haven. Softly, he whispered reassurances, allowing her to cry as much as she needed.
In that moment, a peculiar thought flickered in Makoto's mind: Has Fon come to see me as a male version of Yoruichi, someone to lean on entirely?
After all, Fon, with her prideful and often aloof nature, had never shown such vulnerability before—not even a trace. But now, not a shred of her usual facade remained.
Gradually, her sobs subsided, and, before Makoto realized it, Fon had cried herself to sleep. Her small, slender frame slumped against him completely, so light that he could feel the individual ridges of her ribs beneath his hand.
Really now…
Makoto sighed, understanding that this emotional outburst was exactly what Fon needed most at the moment. For now, his goal for the evening had been perfectly accomplished.
"But Fon, you're being way too defenseless," Makoto muttered under his breath, exasperated. "Good thing you've got a decent guy like me looking after you."
Carefully, he slipped an arm around her waist and lifted her light, delicate body with ease. He carried her towards the bed in the tent, planning to let her rest peacefully for the night.
Just as he was about to lay her down, the tent flap was suddenly thrown open. A chipper voice called out, "Makoto-kun, I heard Isane went home early to—"
The voice cut off abruptly. Standing at the entrance was Risa, her cheeks rapidly turning crimson as she processed the sight before her: Makoto holding a girl in his arms, heading for the bed.
"Ah! S-Sorry for interrupting—"
Instinct took over before logic could catch up. With her face burning, Risa quickly retreated from the tent, leaving Makoto staring blankly at the now-empty entrance, holding Fon and feeling entirely misunderstood.
This... this is definitely going to be misinterpreted, Makoto thought, utterly helpless.
We need to repair the barracks faster. These tents are terrible—no locks, no privacy. I swear I had no intentions towards Fon... And besides, given her age and build, if anything happened, I'd feel guilty for life. Forget guilty—I'd go straight to jail!
And if Unohana-sensei hears about this, I'd rather be in jail than face her...
Outside, the cool night breeze helped cool Risa's overheated thoughts slightly. Her CPU, overwhelmed with inappropriate mental images, began to stabilize.
Wait a second...
Risa suddenly remembered the girl Makoto had been holding—the slim frame, the distinct profile.
Soi. Fon.
It's that wretched flat-chested tsundere woman?!
Her temper flared instantly. How could she let that happen?!
Determined, Risa stormed back into the tent, shouting as she entered, "Makoto-kun, absolutely not! I forbid this!"
In a flash, she was in front of Makoto, glaring daggers at the sleeping Fon in his arms.
Upon closer inspection, her suspicions were confirmed: it was indeed that woman.
Risa's blood boiled. Soi Fon, the thorn in her side, had always been a hindrance to her relationship with Makoto. This moment felt like a personal vendetta.
"Shhh!" Makoto hastily hushed her. He lowered his voice, trying to reason with her. "Risa, don't make a scene. Fon's been through a lot, and she finally fell asleep."
Risa faltered, momentarily softened by the idea of Fon's hardship. But her resolve returned just as quickly.
No way. There was no way she'd show sympathy for that insufferable tsundere woman!
If Fon succeeded in using this as an opportunity to stay in Makoto's tent—on his bed, no less—what would that mean for her?
I was the first person Makoto-kun befriended in the Fourth Division. If anyone's sleeping here, it should be me!
Struggling to keep her composure, Risa cleared her throat and offered with a sweet smile, "Makoto-kun, having Soi Fon stay in your tent might cause rumors. Perhaps it's better if she rests in my tent instead."
Makoto hesitated, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "That's... not a bad idea. But where would you sleep, Risa?"
"Oh, don't worry about me," Risa said quickly, her voice tinged with nervousness. "I've been having trouble sleeping lately anyway. I could stay here and help you with administrative tasks for the division."
At that moment, Fon's eyes flew open. Glaring fiercely at Risa, she growled, "Absolutely not! Who said I'd stay in your tent?!"
