Chapter 7: Spirit Sisters.
Kalysta's POV
"How do I shift?"
Fenix looked at me and I couldn't help but to notice how utterly beautiful those green eyes were. They looked like they were cut straight from emerald gem stones.
"Kalysta, how to shift is up to you. It is something you need to discover for yourself. The rest of the mind link details I can help you with though. For starters the mind link helps us communicate. I can understand you and you can understand me, but no one else will ever know what it is we say to each other. It is not a spoken language that can be translated. It's a type of telepathy we can use only on each other. You can obviously just say out loud what I'm thinking to your friends but our own personal language is not something you will have an easy time finding the words to explain to others. Aside from that we will know each other's pain. Both physical and emotional pain is shared between us. If I am attacked you will feel it when claws tear through my flesh. When you are heartbroken I will feel it ripping through my chest."
"Thank you for choosing me Fenix."
"It was an easy choice Kalysta. You will find that Mother Nature has blessed us and our bond. We will be able to do so much more than those who have linked before us. Before you know it you will be able to fly with me."
"That's so cool! What else will we be able to do?"
Fenix was honest with Kalysta, "I have no idea. I only know what I have told you. Nature told me to follow the teachings of the wise white owl. I have a feeling you already know who this teacher is."
Kalysta nodded her head. She knew quite well who this teacher was and she was looking forward to seeing her.
Kalysta was so excited. She had a spirit link now, and not just any link but a link blessed by a celestial being. She wasn't sure why she had been chosen for this yet, but she would do her best to be worth of this gift.
"What is all of the commotion in here?" Kalysta was being loud with her excitement. Her mother asked the question while walking towards the room they were in. Once she saw Fenix she stopped at the doorway. She didn't say anything else. She just gawked at the huge, and inexplicably fully healed golden eagle in the room. Her eyes were wide and her mouth popped open in surprise.
Feeling the need to explain Kalysta pointed towards Fenis and said, "Uhm we spirit linked and it healed her. She is not a boy by the way."
"Well I wasn't too concerned about her birdie parts child, but how did she get so big Kalysta? Earlier you carried her in your arms, now she is so large she could carry you and half the village in her talons. Beasts don't grow like this after a spirit bond. Kalysta what is going on?" Her mother was absolutely dumbfounded.
"Fenix is her name. She said that Mother Nature personally blessed our link and I saw Mother Nature in my dreams just now before I woke up."
Her mother couldn't believe her ears but her eyes could not dispute what her daughter was saying.
Kalysta couldn't hardly believe it either. She had honestly thought that Mother Nature was an old wives tale. Since she is a real being though that must mean that Father Time is real too. The Event that no one could explain and had baffled all scientists who studied the phenomenon was actually the work of the beings who had created every Kalysta has ever known.
Sitting down on the daybed again she let her thoughts carry her away. She started thinking about why these beings would choose her for anything. There is nothing super significant about her.
"That's not true. The most significant thing about you is that you and I are bonded sisters. Our link makes you great."
"Fenix, some of my thoughts are not for you to comment on. I am pleased to be chosen but I also just feel so small. It's like I am an ant looking up at the big world for the first time and seeing just how small I am in it."
Fenix scoffed at her. Kalysta could feel the birds frustration with her. She could tell that the eagle already thought much of her.
Kalysta suddenly began to feel something she never expected. She had this insatiable urge to go fishing. She didn't even like fish but the thought of that flaky meat made her mouth drool and she felt pain in her stomach.
Fenix looked at her. "Sorry, that's coming from me. I'm starving."
Kalysta nodded towards their kitchen and pointed in that direction with her thumb. "You want some meat from the deer I killed before I found you? It's not fish but it is still good. Do you uhm want me to cook it or not?".
"Deer is fine. I'm a wild animal so I have never had cooked meat before but I'm willing to try. I can tell the idea of me eating raw meat kind of makes you feel queasy."
Together they went to the kitchen. Kalysta's mother had already ground up some meat from the deer. She grabbed it out of the refrigerator and seasoned it. It made a searing sound as it hit the hot skillet Kalysta had put into the stove top. Pretty soon the smell wafted up and into Fenix's beak. The eagle's stomach tightened up in anticipation of being filled with such delectable meat. Kalysta could easily feel Fenix's hunger. It caused her own stomach to feel like it had been curled up into a tight ball.
Not knowing what else to serve an eagle Kalysta set a plate in front of Fenix. She had perfectly browned the deer meat into big round meatballs for Fenix to scarf down. Kalysta felt the pain in her abdomen subside as Fenix ate. "I want to know more about you Kalysta."
"I can show you some things that interest me if you'd like." Fenix nodded to show she would enjoy that.
She took Fenix to her room once the meatballs were all gone. She spent over an hour showing her new spirit sister all of her belongings and explaining the value each item held, whether monetary or sentimental. It was all quite fascinating to Fenix.
Once Kalysta was done talking Fenix explained what life is like for a fledgling eagle. While practicing flying she had been injured by another bird. It came out of no where and dropped it's weight on Fenix's back. It then flapped up and brought it's talons on her wing. She didn't know what kind of bird it why it attacked. She described the fear and pain she felt as she fell and how was relieved she felt as she watched Kalysta approach her. "Once I was in your arms I knew that I was safe."
Kalysta wiped a tear from her cheeks. Fenix's trust in her so quickly touched the girl's heart. Not even her own twin trusted her.
Wanting to get more rest she decided to busy herself with pushing her blankets and pillows around in her bed until it looked like a silly, multicolored nest. Fenix climbed in and nestled her body down. Kalysta laid down next to her. As she settled down she felt warm feathers going over her body as Fenix covered her up with a giant golden wing.
Never had either of them felt so content and at peace. Even in their dreams the link was present and they enjoyed flying side by side
