Chapter 2: Rocky Wastes {1}
"Whaaaaaat!" Ryuji Kurozawa screamed as he scrolled through hundreds of posts of hardcore players and lore theorists all debating about a certain Phantom Player that just so happened to be him. "How? Why? What is happening?" He questioned as he read through the post of a lore theorist explaining how he could be one of the the colossi that hasn't been discovered. "An unknown colossi? A ghost? A unique event? I'm just a regular player!" He complained as he shut off his phone and placed it on the table next to his bed.
Ryuji placed his face into his hands as he debated what he should do next. Coming out to the public eye of the game would just bring him even more trouble then he is now whereas if he tried to lay low people would just try even harder to find him. It was truly quite the predicament he had been caught him. "I suppose I can only blame myself for this..." truthfully Ryuji spent most of his day on the game grinding. Why wouldn't he? he discovered it only recently and has grown very attached to the unique story and fighting. Any who because of the time he spent grinding he only rarely came back into the towns and when he did it was almost always in the dead of the night... This made him look rather sketchy and only acted as fuel towards these forums rumours.
"I don't know how to deal with this!" He whined, "for now I will just keep playing the game as I have..." Ryuji put his full dive headset on and found a comfortable position to lay in before starting up the game.
Walking through the crowded streets he becoming all to aware of his own presence and decided it would be best if he distracted himself with a different train of thought, 'What should my goal for today be?' He thought, his mind raced with the many different possibilities of adventure he could take... 'Perhaps I should check out... The rocky wastes?' The rocky wastes was a large desert like area full of ravines, mountains and of course monsters. A lot of monsters. The level requirement for the area was around 70 normally you would go with a party of about 2 to 4 players. However, 'Kuro' didn't have any friends who played the game so naturally he would be soloing it again.
Kuro sliced his katana upwards delivering a fatal slash to a large stone golem completely splitting it in half. As it died it exploded into blue particles and his XP was awarded, "The rocky wastes are no joke..." He complained slightly drained from the fight against four 'Granite Golems.' a rare variant of the regular stone golem. The fight had started to not even five minutes into his expedition, to which he was quite glad. "If I had encountered them on the way back I probably wouldn't have had enough stamina..." He said this not because he doubted his own abilities but because of the sheer ferocity of the rocky wastes.
To put into perspective how difficult this area zone truly was not only is the recommended level 70 with a party recommendation of 2 to 4. When inside you're constantly receiving the 'Sandstorm' debuff, it lowers your visibility by around 20% and results in your hp dropping by 0.5 every 10 seconds. Seems bad, huh? Well that's not even the worst! During the night temperatures drop below freezing and you have to set up a fire, which attracts more mobs by the way, or you'll freeze to death! Oh yeah and on especially hot days you got the 'Heat Haze' debuffs that makes you see illusions! It's just not a very nice place... But the XP is wonderful!
Kuro slid across the stony floor to just barely evade a wind slash from a nearby gargoyle. Before the gargoyle could turn around he activated an agility type skill allowing him to dive up to the height of the flying gargoyle. The gargoyle slashed with its claws to which Kuro graciously manoeuvred through the air to avoid, as he plummeted towards the hard grown he quickly unsheathed his katana and delivered two fatal slashes. His sword moved like a rushing river effortlessly cutting through the stone connecting the gargoyle's wings to its back. Before landing on the floor he swiftly manoeuvred so that his feet would hit the floor first.
Kuro landed like a feather, just barely touching the ground. The gargoyle however smashed into the floor creating a small crater, before it could react Kuro's sword had already delivered the final blow. "Eh? no item drop? Maybe the next one." He turned around towards where the gargoyle had been, three earth elementals hovered above the ground.
"I'm attracting a lot of air-born mobs today, huh?" He said with a sigh. Kuro dashed towards the earth elements dodging left and right to evade the onslaught of rocks they fired towards him, In his opinion these guys were the easiest mob in the wastes they didn't move much so all you had to do was dodge their pellets. While the fire rate was fast it was also predictable. Anyone could get their attacks down after just a few tries. Once he was close enough he delivered a single vertical slash destroying all three elementals.
The familiar blue system UI popped up before him, 'Level Up Achieved 63-64' and 'Item Drop Acquired: Essence of Earth' "Oh! Level up! Finally." He pushed aside the notification for now and looked over the item he had acquired, 'Essence of Earth: Energy ripped from the mantle of the earth and given life to become an earth elemental - can be infused into weapons giving them a 10% physical damage bonus' "Interesting? This could actually turn out quite useful in certain fights." He thought aloud pocketing the item into his inventory.
He swished his gaze away from his status and onto the clock built within the inventory, "EH? I've been doing this for 3 hours already?" His widened in disbelief and his brows shot up, he slid his finger down along the menu in an attempt to refresh it in hopes it was a bug but nothing changed.
"Ugh I should definitely head back to the inn and log out..." He grumbled, remembering last night, "I've got to go shopping or I'll be going today without any food..." He closed the system UIs and opened up his map instead, charting course back to the closest town.
He dashed full speed north-east but not even 30 seconds into his journey the earth erupted in roars, the ground began to shake, "Void serpent?" He questioned himself, Void serpents are the rarest mob you can find in the rocky wastes and are incredibly powerful, nearly as strong as certain bosses. The recommended requirements are level 90 with a party of four.
