Chapter 16: Strange Encounter
(Chapter 16:Mira pov)
The night air was cool, carrying the scent of pine and rain. I stepped outside Lorenzo's house, the last echoes of my own words still ringing in my ears. "I need to do this alone." I had barely managed to say it without my voice cracking, but now, away from him, the weight of my decision settled in.
I wrapped my arms around myself, taking a deep breath to steady the storm still raging within. The familiar pull of his presence was fading behind me, leaving a hollow ache. Yet, as the distance grew, something else stirred—a quiet, unsteady beat of power.
The wind whipped around me, whispering secrets I hadn't heard before. My magic—no longer amplified by Lorenzo's influence—felt different. Subtler. A flicker instead of a blaze, and yet… it was mine. Just mine.
Closing my eyes, I reached out to that feeling, trying to coax it forward without letting it spiral out of control. Slowly, warmth bloomed beneath my skin, filling my veins with a gentle pulse, as though my magic was coming alive in its own way.
A thrill of independence coursed through me. For the first time, I could sense the magic without it overwhelming me. Maybe I really could do this. Maybe I could find my way, one step at a time.
Opening my eyes, I took one last look at the house behind me, then turned and started walking, letting the quiet hum of my magic guide me forward into the unknown.
The streets were dark and quiet as I walked, each step carrying me further from Lorenzo's house. A chill crept up my spine, making the night feel colder than it should. Shadows stretched across the street, thick and foreboding. I tried to brush off the unease gnawing at me, but it lingered, like eyes watching me from somewhere unseen.
I looked up, feeling an instinctual tug, and froze. High above, silhouetted against the moonlight, was a figure on the rooftop—a man, his eyes fixed on me with an intensity that sent a shiver through my bones. His posture was still, calculated, as if he were studying me, assessing something. For a moment, I wanted to turn and run, but my feet felt rooted to the ground.
Who is that?
The name Callidus drifted through my mind, unbidden, stirring something half-remembered. Lorenzo had mentioned him, a name laced with warnings and shadows. I swallowed, my heartbeat quickening. Could it be him?i asked myself, the magic and aura around him screamed evil.
I broke eye contact, taking a step back, but as soon as I did, the man was no longer on the rooftop. My breath hitched as he materialized in front of me, the shift so sudden it was as if he had stepped straight out of the darkness.
"You're out here alone," he said, his voice low and smooth, with an edge that made my skin prickle. "Not the safest place, is it?"
My instincts screamed at me, every nerve on edge. "Who… are you?"
He tilted his head, the faintest hint of a smile on his lips, though his eyes remained cold. "Let's say I'm… an interested party."
There was something unsettlingly familiar about him, something in his gaze that felt both knowing and calculating. I took another step back, my pulse racing. "I don't need company."
"Perhaps not," he said, the ghost of a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. "But then again, you don't know who your friends are, do you?"
I clenched my fists, anger flaring, but before I could respond, a presence swept over me, one I recognized instantly. The tension eased slightly as I felt him nearby.Lorenzo.
In the next heartbeat, Lorenzo was there, his expression unreadable but his gaze sharp as it locked onto the stranger.
"You shouldn't be here," Lorenzo said, his voice edged with warning. He moved closer, placing himself between me and the stranger, and his presence felt like a shield against the cold, twisted aura that surrounded the man.
The stranger smiled, amused. "I was just saying hello."
"Consider it said," Lorenzo replied, his voice low. "And now you should leave."
The man's gaze lingered on me one last time, something unreadable flashing in his eyes. Then, as suddenly as he had appeared, he vanished into the night, leaving only the unsettling memory of his presence.
I let out a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding. "Who was he?"
Lorenzo's jaw tightened, his gaze fixed on the darkness where the stranger had disappeared. "Someone you should avoid. Come on." He took my hand, his grip steady, and led me back toward the house. The shadows felt deeper now, but with Lorenzo beside me, the fear began to fade.
Yet the memory of that man's gaze, cold and knowing, stayed with me.
(Lorenzo pov)
The door closed behind Mira, and I stood there, staring at the space she'd just left. The silence in the room pressed down on me, sharper than any blade. She was gone, and I had only myself to blame.
I sank into the chair by the fire, raking a hand through my hair. I'd spent lifetimes waiting for her return, for a chance to protect her again, to keep her safe in ways I couldn't before. And now, because of my own choices, she felt betrayed by me—by the very bond I'd created to keep her close.
I hadn't wanted it to come to this. But how could I explain to her that my fear of losing her had driven me to act beyond her trust? I'd let the desire to protect her blur into control, and now… she was gone, slipping through my fingers.
My hand clenched, feeling the faint tremor of her energy as she moved farther away. Her magic was raw, unsettled, and if she didn't find a way to control it on her own… A prickle of worry shot through me, and I forced myself to focus, stretching out my senses to trace her presence. She was still close by, her emotions a tangled mix of anger, sadness, and something else—a faint note of despair.
I shut my eyes, tuning into the faint, familiar pull of her magic. But something strange caught my attention, something dark and foreign. A presence circling her, watching. A chill ran down my spine.
Callidus.
I stood, feeling the blood surge in my veins. If he had found her, if he dared to approach her in this vulnerable state… I wouldn't let him use her for his own twisted ambitions. Without another thought, I headed for the door, my resolve hardening.
"Mira, hold on," I whispered to the night, my heart pounding with urgency.
I teleported myself to where she was using her magic as a guard, I could tell she was scared.
I dismissed Callidus before turning to her and taking her hand as we walked to my house.
I felt Mira's trembling fingers in my hand as we made our way back to the house. She hadn't said a word since Callidus vanished, but her silence was heavy, weighted with questions and lingering fear. The way she had looked at him—unsure, almost vulnerable—made something twist painfully inside me.
As soon as we stepped inside, I released her hand, turning away to steady myself. The fire was still crackling in the hearth, but the warmth felt hollow. I clenched my fists, pushing down the anger that simmered beneath the surface. I hadn't been fast enough. She'd been alone, unprotected, and Callidus had found her.
"Who was he?" Her voice broke the silence, small but steady.
I took a breath, forcing myself to meet her gaze. "Callidus," I said simply. "He's… dangerous. He has a way of twisting things, making you question everything. He feeds off power and pain—and he'll do anything to harness yours."
She looked down, her expression tightening. "Why would he want my power?"
I stepped closer, hesitating before I spoke. "Because you're stronger than you realize, Mira. Your magic—it's rare. And as long as you're untrained, he sees you as an opportunity." I could see her tense at my words, the weight of everything crashing down on her.
"I didn't ask for this, Lorenzo," she whispered, her voice thick with frustration. "I didn't ask for any of this."
I fought the urge to reach out, to pull her close and shield her from everything that threatened her. But I knew I had to respect her space—especially now. "I know," I said, keeping my tone gentle. "But if you'll let me, I'll help you learn. We can face this together."
Her eyes met mine, conflicted and uncertain, and I felt a flicker of hope. But I couldn't deny the fear that lingered in my chest. As much as I wanted to protect her, I knew that her power would only continue to grow. And with Callidus watching, waiting for the slightest crack, I had to be ready for anything.
I would keep her safe, no matter the cost.
