Shadowhunter in the Apocalypse

Chapter 35: Dream

The morning was gray when they checked out of the hotel. The receptionist from last night's session smiled shyly, cheeks tinted pink, giving them a little wave as the glass doors shut behind them. Reed gave a little wave but didn't slow his stride and neither did Jasmine.

They were in Hunter mode now, even though Jasmine wouldn't be following him inside, she was very vital to this mission.

An SUV was parked directly outside, the exterior looked very plain Reed noticed. The driver was a Romanian hunter in standard gear, he stepped out quickly and opened the back door for Jasmine with a polite nod.

"Hunter Reed," he said, voice careful, respectful. He gave Reed a short bow. "It's an honor. I've been assigned to drive you to the drop point."

He didn't even give his name, he knew better than to be accused of wasting An S Class hunters' time trying to befriend him.

Reed nodded his head once and offered a little polite smiled before he slid into the passenger seat. Jasmine settled into the back, laptop already on her knees, hands moving with practiced efficiency. The hunter closed the door behind her, circled back, and got behind the wheel.

The SUV rolled out onto the road, eating up miles of countryside. Trees thickened, swallowing the light. Jasmine tapped at her keyboard, attaching Reed's suit feed to her monitor, running calibration checks like she'd done a hundred times before.

"Suit's feed is live boss," she said, eyes on the screen. "Vitals checked. Comms are solid though I doubt that would last long. Map overlays are uploaded."

"Nice Job as usual Jas," Reed answered, his gaze locked on the blur of trees outside.

"Thanks, I aim to impress" She replied simply before going back to whatever she was typing.

He noted that the other hunter kept looking at Jasmine through the front mirror, it seemed someone had a crush on his Personal assistant, it was bound to be unfruitful though, so he didn't think too much about it.

They didn't speak much during the journey. Reed was thankful the Romanian hunter they sent him was naturally quiet.

The SUV carried them deeper until the road gave out at a crude checkpoint, the official edge of the forest. The man pulled the brake, stepped out, and opened Reed's door.

"This is as far as I was told to go," he said, bowing again.

Reed climbed out and took in the sight of the dense creepy forest.

He might die the moment he steps in, be frozen solid like the rest of the hunters, he doubted whatever monstrosity was inside there cared for his special class status.

He took in a deep breath and took Ravens' ring out of his pocket and put it on, at least things that would want to harm him, shouldn't be able to sense him now.

Theoretically of course, who knew whether this worked on whatever lived inside that forest.

"Reed wait."

He stopped, turned back and was suddenly enveloped in a bone crushing hug.

"You come straight back here the moment you sense anything is wrong, you hear me!"

She sounded like she would punch him if he said otherwise so he wisely kept quiet and let her enjoy her moment until she finally let go.

"Don't die in there" With that she stepped back and into the SUV.

He sighed and entered the forest, suddenly everything shifted, it was like he stepped into another dimension, he couldn't even see where he had come from.

Freaky shit.

He tapped his ears to activate the comms.

"Jasmine, can you hear me?"

Silence.

"Jasmine!"

Above him, a golden sun burned steady in the sky while two silver moons floated at its sides, revolving slowly around it.

A sugar sweet smell was the next to hit him, like he was suddenly in a cotton candy factory, it was frankly nice…...but a bit weird.

Reed didn't move at first wanting to take in his new environment, His hand twitched to summon his shadow blade.

For the first time in his life the shadows didn't obey him.

A very vulnerable feeling washed over him instantly, but he decided to keep on moving, it's not like he could suddenly turn back, he expected something like this had to happen to be able to trap another S class hunter.

Pink grass stretched as far as he could see, soft and glowing faintly in the strange light.

And he could swear he saw an honest to God Unicorn, no multiple unicorns with silver horns, and they were eating this pink like grass, it was like he was suddenly stuck in 7 year old girls dream who had just finished watching Barbie, the unicorns flicked their tails as they played like carefree horses which brought a small smile to his face, but he still tried to stay alert, he was trapped here, this wasn't a vacation it was a prison.

He steeled himself and continued walking until he came across the third wonder, above, flocks of winged creatures, he recognized as Pegasus, dozens of them wheeled and darted through the sky. Their wings cast these sparkly dust in their wake, raining down like falling stars.

He was sure any girl would love this place, if nothing popped up to kill him that is. Maybe he can even come here with Raven and Mia…though Raven did prefer goth related activities he was sure there was a sparkly girl underneath all that. Jasmine too but they would probably just end up fucking through out instead of enjoying the scenery….though that didn't sound like a terrible idea.

The next thing he encountered were Bunnies, except they were the size of a small car, they darted across the fields, chasing each other in circles in this huge adorable fashion. Strange round creatures with floppy ears rolled through the grass like living toys. None of them seemed to recognize him as a threat…though without his shadow magic he didn't feel like much of a threat at the moment.
