Chapter 23: Approval
Reed stood in the center of the training hall with his hands pulling his shadow bow, aiming at the door.
If anyone asked him why he was looking like he was about to assassinate someone, he would simply reply.
Training.
Mia walked into the training room with her headset plugged on and her bag hung snuggly at her back, she wore a hoodie that covered her hair, like she had done for the past two weeks ever since she survived what Reed internally named hybridization.
"You're late," he said.
Three fast, silent arrows of out shot from the bow.
2 weeks ago, Mia would have probably survived this but with a good amount of effort, but the Mia of this morning was now a hybrid that had been thought by Reed.
Her bag and headset were off her in milliseconds.
She caught the first arrow, twisted so another skimmed past her ribs, and smacked the last aside with fire from her palm.
Vampire and fae magic.
Reed knew that every race had their strength and weaknesses, shadow hunters had weaker flesh which they made up for with their shadow magic, it was part of the reason they fought like ninjas and assassins instead of brawlers and tanks.
Apostles had the same problem except they got faster light magic and healing magic but were restricted by their faith. Werewolves had their whole full moon thing which they more than made up for with their strength and speed, especially in their wolf form.
And then there were the species that didn't really like to mingle with humanity whether by choice or by force.
Faes.
Faes were the most ethereal beings in the supernatural world, they lived in their own realm like Angels and demons but unlike them, they could freely come here, staying was a bit of a problem since they needed their Great trees in their realm for their life force but Reed had learned they had ways to get around that barrier, they just didn't like to stay beside humans longer than necessary.
Faes dabbled in elemental magic, fire, earth, air, and water magic. It was what their entire world and culture was built on.
Mia scowled as she dropped the one she caught on the floor, it turned back to a normal shadow.
"Normal people just say that, they don't try to kill their students!"
"I'm not normal people."
She began to circle him, fire flickering at her hands. "One day I'm going to shove one of those arrows somewhere you won't like."
"You'd have to move faster for that." He smirked.
"Or maybe I just have to….bend down again so that you coincidentally lose your guard" She smirked viciously.
He never going to hear the end of that was he?.
It wasn't his fault her ass looked so damn delicious in her tight leather pants, quite frankly he would love to meet her tailor, have a word with the guy….maybe thank him after punching out a few of his teeth.
"It was one time, and I was thinking about something" Reed shot back "you just happened to be in the way"
"Whatever you say Hunter Reed." She batted her eyelashes then he bolted at him with her vampire speed, her fist was as usual covered in fire. Reed slid sideways, letting her punch cut through empty air. She spun, kicked low, fire blazing along her shin. Shadow blast came to his aid, blasting him up, her strike burning across the floor where he had stood.
Yeah she was finally ready for him to actually get a bit serious
Reed landed, conjured a short blade of shadow.
Her eyes lit up in happiness and a tinge of surprise.
"No holding back on me anymore?" She asked hopefullt
"Don't flatter yourself,"Reed rolled his eyes at her enthusiasm "I will barely amp it to two percent of my combat ability for you."
"Has anyone ever told you how much of a cocky douchebag you are?"
"Can't say any of them had ever had the balls"
She darted in. Her fists blurred. He deflected each strike with the blade, short movements, economical. Her heel came high, fire trailing. He leaned aside and vanished into a step of shadow, reappearing behind her.
Mia turned instantly and threw both hands forward. Fire erupted. Reed lifted a wall of shadow, the blast striking and shaking the floor. Smoke rolled across the hall.
"Thankfully I don't have balls" she teased "But I'm sure with the way you have been staring at my ass you would have definitely noticed that".
"You know I can delay your first mission out of pure spite yeah?"He shot back
She burst through the smoke, claws of fire stretching from her hands. He caught her wrist, shadows reinforcing his grip. She twisted, using her strength to rip free. She swung a kick, heel flaming. Reed blocked with a shield of shadow, the impact rattling through his arm.
She grinned. "Sure then I'll tell the whole base how much of a pervert their darling Hunter Reed is, Undressing the innocent commanders daughter with his eyes when he is supposed to be training her, I bet if I got naked right now you would pin me too the wall like a beast."
He didn't deny the claim, he didn't feel like lying to be honest.
"Innocent my ass" Reed scoffed, "Don't think I haven't noticed how much you have been bending down around me a lot lately, wearing tighter pants too."
Her eyes sparkled with new light at his comment, he realized too late he had admitted to checking her out more than once.
She dove back at him. She pressed him with quick, sharp strikes, weaving assassin precision into brute vampire strength. Fire snapped with every punch and kick. She rolled low, pushed herself higher with a blast of flame from her palms, then dove with a kick aimed at his head.
Reed shadow stepped. She smashed the mat where he'd stood. He reappeared behind her and tapped her shoulder with the flat of his blade.
"Dead."
"That's cheating!" She spun, her face shining with sweat. "Shadow teleportation has no counter."
"I'm sure you would find one if you stopped being such a brat"
"Keep acting like you don't like it when I'm bratty for you"
this girl.
"What happened to little Shy Mia that couldn't meet my eyes huh" He groaned "She was much better in my opinion"
Her eyes narrowed at the comment and she went at him again. He blocked each strike with his blade, but this time her rhythm forced him to shift faster. She spun under his guard, kicked hard, fire bursting from her leg.
He materialized a shield in time to catch it, but she was definitely pushing him to use more of his strength.
That serum really did do wonders for her like she had planned, I've never met a more lucky girl.
She saw his momentary pause and smirked. "Oh my God… I actually made you try didn't i?"
"You surely did something." Shadows curled tighter around his arms.
He snapped a whip of shadow across the floor. She jumped it, spun, and blasted down with her palms to vault high overhead.
Her landing came with a burst of fire from her arms, a barrage of strikes. Reed blocked, shadows flaring with each hit. One of her punches almost grazed his shoulder but he had dodged it.
She grinned wide. "Almost."
"Almost doesn't count in real combat little one?" Reed smirked as she formed a rough ball of shadow around her fist.
He decided it was about time to end the session, her side effect would start showing any moment from now.
Shadows exploded outward, dozens of tendrils rushing from the floor. They caught her arms, her legs, wrapped tight. She blasted some apart with fire, tore others with raw strength, but more closed in.
She freed one hand and nearly ripped loose, until Reed shadow stepped into her guard. His palm lifted.
A massive hand of shadow formed overhead, large enough to blot the ceiling lights. It clamped around her midair and slammed her flat against the mat. The floor shuddered.
She strained, flames lighting her arms, but the construct held.
Reed knelt beside her. "Dead again."
Mia panted, hair stuck to her face, eyes still defiant. "Still a pervert."
He rolled his eyes for the millionth time today. "Okay that's enough training today"
Reed released the shadows and offered his hand. She gripped it, strong, refusing to show weakness as he pulled her up. They stood close, both catching their breath.
"You're improving," he said.
Her lips curved. "You finally admit that I impressed you."
He stayed silent wisely deciding not to give her more ammunition for the whole him checking her out thing.
She suddenly dashed for her bag, taking out some snacks and devouring them like she hadn't eating in days.
Reed frowned at the familiar sight, ever since she had become a hybrid she had gotten this insatiable hunger, it seemed to be growing into something troubling. "It's getting worse, isn't it?"
She barely managed a nod before she tore through her fifth snack.
She mumbled around a mouthful, then swallowed. "Yeah…"
"And you're sure you don't have any urges to drink blood."He asked walking closer.
Her eyes rolled. "No, dad, I don't have any urges to drink blood."
Reed pinched the bridge of his nose. "Damn brat… see if I care for you again." He sighed, lowering his voice. "Don't worry. The lab's working on what you need. But in other news…" He paused. "I think you're ready for your first mission."
Her snack slipped from her hand. "You mean it…?"
"Yeah."
For a second she just stared at him, then she launched herself forward. Arms around his neck, legs around his waist, squeezing him so tight he nearly dropped her.
"Mia—"
Her chest pressed against him, soft and unmistakable. He froze, heart jumping, his cock twitching traitorously.
"…shit." He coughed hard, trying to push air back into his lungs. "Alright, that's enough." He let her slide down, carefully peeling her off.
She definitely felt his Hard-on, now he was never going to hear the end of this.
Her face was red, ears burning. She kept her eyes down, mumbling, "Sorry… I don't know what got into me… it's the hunger… makes my emotions harder to control…"
At least she had an excuse, he didn't.
Reed scratched his jaw, deliberately looking anywhere but at her. "It's… no problem." He turned toward the door. "I'll go inform your father you're ready. Get some food in you."
